About the author: The author shares a heartfelt account of survival and hope during the tsunami, emphasizing the strength of human spirit in the face of natural disasters.
📖 Detailed Explanation
PART I begins on the morning of 26 December 2004. At 6 a.m. an earthquake of magnitude about 9.0 on the Richter scale struck deep under the Indian Ocean near Sumatra. The sea floor heaved upward, pushing a huge wall of water — a tsunami — towards the coasts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and even far-off Africa. The chapter tells the disaster not through dry statistics but through the true stories of people on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Ignesious, manager of a cooperative in Katchall island, lost his wife, daughter, father-in-law and his father-in-law's sister in the disaster. He had felt the earthquake while still in bed, and when others ran towards the sea bed which had suddenly become dry, he sensed danger and pushed his family towards safety — but the giant waves swept his loved ones away even as he watched helplessly.

Sanjeev, a policeman posted on Car Nicobar, tried bravely to save his wife by pushing her up onto the roof of their house. But a strong wave swept her off, and Sanjeev jumped in to save her. Both of them were drowned. His courage and sacrifice show the deep love and helplessness people felt before the overwhelming force of the sea.

Meghna, a thirteen-year-old girl, was swept away with her parents and seventy-seven other people. After floating in the sea for two days, holding on to a wooden plank, she was finally washed back to the shore — clinging to the same door that had carried her. She survived, though she lost her whole family. Her endurance is one of the most moving moments in the chapter.

Almas Javed, a young girl, lost her parents. Her father was an engineer in the Public Works Department. When the waves came, she saw the sea rise and her family swept away; she herself was saved by clinging to a floating log of wood until rescuers reached her. These individual stories put real human faces to the enormous tragedy.

PART II shifts to a striking mystery: why did so few wild and domestic animals die in the tsunami? At Yala National Park in Sri Lanka, home to hundreds of elephants, leopards and monkeys, hardly any animal carcasses were found after the waves. Flamingos that bred at Point Calimere in India flew to higher ground before the tsunami struck. Many believe animals possess a 'sixth sense' that warns them of approaching danger.

The chapter gives examples: a man's two dogs refused to go to the beach for their usual morning walk and so saved the whole family; elephants screamed and ran to higher ground; bats flew away in the middle of the day. Scientists suggest animals may sense the vibrations of the earth or sudden changes in air and water pressure that humans cannot detect. The lesson ends by reminding us how much humanity has yet to learn from nature and from the creatures we share the earth with.

📝 Summary
On 26 December 2004 a massive undersea earthquake near Sumatra triggered a tsunami that devastated the coasts of the Indian Ocean, including India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The chapter tells the tragedy through true survivor stories. Ignesious lost his wife, daughter and other relatives. Policeman Sanjeev drowned trying to save his wife. Thirteen-year-old Meghna survived two days at sea clinging to a wooden plank, and Almas Javed was saved by holding on to a floating log though she lost her parents. The second part records a strange fact — very few animals died, because creatures like elephants, dogs, flamingos and bats seemed to sense the danger and flee to safety before the waves came. The chapter celebrates human courage and resilience while marvelling at the mysterious instincts of animals.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of 'Tsunami' is that even in the face of nature's most destructive fury, the human spirit shows extraordinary courage, sacrifice and the will to survive. At the same time the chapter highlights nature's mysterious gift to animals — an instinct that warns them of danger — reminding humans of their place within, and not above, the natural world.

The title 'Tsunami' is apt because the entire chapter centres on the catastrophic tsunami of 26 December 2004. The word 'tsunami' (Japanese for 'harbour wave') immediately conveys the giant ocean waves that form the backdrop of every survivor's story and the mystery of the animals' escape. The single, powerful word captures both the natural event and its human and animal consequences.

The chapter beautifully balances courage and helplessness. Human courage is seen in Ignesious, who sensed danger and tried to push his family to safety; in Sanjeev, who lifted his wife to the roof and then jumped into the water to save her; and most of all in young Meghna and Almas, who clung to a wooden plank and a log respectively, refusing to give up their lives. Yet the chapter equally shows human helplessness, for the giant waves were far stronger than any person. Ignesious still lost his wife, daughter and other relatives; Sanjeev and his wife both drowned; Meghna and Almas survived only to find their families gone. Thus the disaster reveals that while the human spirit is brave and full of love, it is also fragile before the overwhelming power of nature. The chapter leaves us moved by both the heroism and the heartbreak of the survivors.

The second part of the chapter records the surprising fact that very few animals died in the tsunami. At Yala National Park in Sri Lanka, full of elephants and leopards, almost no animal bodies were found. Flamingos at Point Calimere flew away to higher ground before the waves came. A man's two dogs refused to go to the beach for their morning walk and so saved their family, while elephants screamed and ran uphill and bats flew off in daytime. Scientists believe animals may sense the earth's vibrations or sudden changes in air and water pressure that humans cannot. The lesson is that humans, in becoming dependent on technology, may have dulled their natural instincts. We should respect nature, observe the warning signs given by animals and the environment, and build proper early-warning systems and disaster preparedness so that fewer lives are lost in future calamities.
