📖 Detailed Explanation
Every afternoon, on their way home from school, children would go and play in the Giant's large, lovely garden. It had soft green grass, beautiful flowers like stars, and twelve peach trees that blossomed in spring and bore rich fruit in autumn. The birds sang so sweetly that the children stopped their games to listen. They were very happy there.

One day the Giant came back. He had been away for seven years visiting his friend, the Cornish ogre. When he saw the children playing in his garden, he grew angry and shouted at them in his gruff voice. The frightened children ran away. The Giant was selfish; he wanted the garden only for himself. So he built a high wall around it and put up a notice-board: 'TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED.'

Now the poor children had nowhere to play. Then spring came to the whole country, but in the Giant's garden it was still winter. The Snow covered the grass with her great white cloak, the Frost painted all the trees silver, and they invited the North Wind and the Hail to stay. So Snow, Frost, the North Wind and Hail enjoyed themselves in the garden. 'Spring has forgotten this garden,' they cried.

The Giant could not understand why spring was so late in coming to his garden. He longed for the warm weather. One morning he heard lovely music — it was a little linnet singing outside his window. Through a hole in the wall the children had crept in, and they were sitting in the branches of the trees. Wherever a child sat, a tree had burst into blossom and birds were singing. Spring had come back with the children! But in one far corner it was still winter, where a small boy stood crying, too little to climb a tree.

The Giant's heart melted at this sight. 'How selfish I have been!' he said. He went softly downstairs, opened the door gently and walked into the garden. He took the little boy in his hand and put him up into the tree, which at once blossomed and the birds came to sing. The boy lovingly threw his arms around the Giant's neck and kissed him. The other children, seeing the Giant was no longer wicked, came running back. The Giant knocked down the wall and declared the garden belonged to the children forever. But the little boy he loved most was nowhere to be found.

Years passed and the Giant grew very old and feeble. He loved the children, but most of all he longed to see the little boy again. One winter morning he saw a wonderful sight: in a far corner stood a tree covered with white blossoms, and beneath it stood the little boy he loved. But on the child's palms and feet were the marks of two nails — the wounds of love. The angry Giant asked who had dared to wound him, ready to slay him. But the child smiled and said, 'These are the wounds of Love. You once let me play in your garden; today you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise.' That afternoon the children found the Giant lying dead under the tree, all covered with white blossoms.

📝 Summary
A Giant has a beautiful garden where children love to play. When he returns after seven years and finds them there, he selfishly drives them out and builds a wall with a 'Trespassers will be prosecuted' sign. As a result, perpetual winter settles over his garden while spring blooms everywhere else. One day the children creep back through a hole in the wall, and spring returns with them — except in one corner where a little boy is too small to climb a tree. Moved with pity, the Giant lifts the boy into the tree, realises his selfishness, breaks down the wall and shares the garden. The little boy disappears, but years later returns with wounds of love on his hands and feet (a Christ figure) and takes the now-loving, dying Giant to his garden, Paradise.

The title 'The Selfish Giant' is apt because the story centres on a Giant whose selfishness drives the children away and brings eternal winter to his garden. His selfishness is the cause of all the misery, and the story traces his journey from this selfishness to love and generosity, making the title both descriptive and ironic — for he ends as the most loving of beings.

At the beginning, the Giant is selfish and unkind. Returning after seven years, he drives the children out of his garden, builds a high wall and warns trespassers, keeping the beauty all for himself. His selfishness brings a punishment: eternal winter grips his garden while spring blooms everywhere else. One morning he sees the children creeping in and spring returning with them, but a little boy stands crying in a cold corner, too small to climb a tree. The sight melts the Giant's heart. He realises, 'How selfish I have been!' He gently lifts the boy into the tree, knocks down the wall, and shares the garden with all the children. From then on he is loving and gentle, playing with the children and longing for the little boy. Finally, the Christ-like child returns and rewards his transformed heart by taking him to Paradise. Thus the Giant changes completely — from cold selfishness to warm, self-giving love.

The little boy is the most important figure in the tale. At first he is simply a helpless child who cannot climb the tree, and his weeping awakens pity and love in the Giant, beginning the Giant's transformation. When he returns years later, the wounds of two nails on his palms and feet reveal him to be a Christ-like figure, for these are the marks of the crucifixion. He calls them 'the wounds of Love.' Because the Giant once let him play in his garden, the child now leads the loving, dying Giant to his own garden, which is Paradise. Thus the boy gives the story a deep spiritual meaning: love and selflessness shown on earth are rewarded with eternal life, and Christ recognises and repays even a single act of kindness.
