The five-year integrated law degree combines a bachelor's degree (usually BA, sometimes BBA, B.Com or B.Sc) with an LLB, so you qualify in law at about 22–23 without a separate three-year LLB after graduation. It is the route into the National Law Universities and most top law schools. It suits students who are fairly sure they want a legal career — litigation, corporate law, judiciary, policy or in-house counsel — and who enjoy reading, arguing and writing precisely.
Know this. Getting into an NLU is not the same as getting a big law-firm job, and not getting into an NLU is not the end of a law career. The top corporate firms recruit heavily from a few NLUs, but litigation, the judiciary, in-house legal work and policy are open to graduates of any Bar Council–approved college who build skill through internships, moots and writing. Families most often underestimate the first three to five years of litigation, when income is low and depends on the senior you work under.
Getting in
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) — integrated five-year law degree (also BBA LLB, B.Com LLB, B.Sc LLB)
Who can apply
Class 12 pass in any stream. The Bar Council of India sets a minimum of 45% in Class 12 for general category (lower for reserved categories); for CLAT 2027 the Consortium of NLUs asks for 45% (40% for SC/ST/PwD) and sets no upper age limit.
How admission works
The National Law Universities (except NLU Delhi) admit through CLAT, run by the Consortium of NLUs, usually held in early December of Class 12; the Consortium then runs centralised counselling where you rank NLUs and pay a confirmation fee in rounds. NLU Delhi uses its own test, AILET. Several other good law schools use CLAT scores, their own tests (for example Symbiosis's SLAT, Christ, NMIMS), or LSAT–India. Banaras Hindu University and some central universities use CUET-UG. State government law colleges admit through state law entrance tests (Maharashtra MHT-CET Law, AP/TS LAWCET for 5-year, and others) or Class 12 merit. Check that the college is approved by the Bar Council of India — only a BCI-approved degree lets you enrol as an advocate.

Is it you?
A good fit if
- You enjoy debating, reading judgments or news analysis, and building an argument from facts
- You write clearly and can handle a heavy reading load
- You are fairly sure about law and want to save a year compared with BA + LLB
- You are willing to spend long unpaid or low-paid early years if you choose litigation
- You want the judiciary, corporate law firms or legal policy as a career
Think twice if
- You are unsure about law and want to keep other careers open — a three-year BA first, then an LLB, is safer
- You expect every law graduate to earn a large salary at 23; that is true only for a small top slice
- You dislike reading dense text for hours
- The only seat available is at a college not approved by the Bar Council of India
The honest part
- CLAT is competitive and rewards reading speed and comprehension more than general knowledge memorised in the last month
- Internship quality matters as much as college name; most students arrange them themselves
- Litigation income is low and irregular at the start and rises with reputation over years
- After graduating you must pass the All India Bar Examination to get a Certificate of Practice before you can argue in court
- Law firm work involves long hours; burnout is common in the first years
What it costs
- Government
- State government law colleges and university departments: roughly ₹10,000–1 lakh a year. National Law Universities: roughly ₹2–3.5 lakh a year including hostel, varying by NLU.
- Private
- Private law schools: roughly ₹2–6 lakh a year; the most expensive exceed that.
- Help
- Many NLUs have need-based fee waivers and scholarships, and state domicile quotas at state NLUs; ask each NLU about its financial-aid policy before counselling.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Starting pay
The spread is very wide. Tier-1 corporate law firms hire top NLU graduates at roughly ₹12–20 lakh a year; in-house and mid-sized firms usually pay ₹4–10 lakh; young litigators in a senior's chamber often earn ₹10,000–40,000 a month for the first few years. Judicial service posts pay on the judicial pay scale once allowances are added. Treat top-firm figures as the exception, not the median.

Questions families ask
Is there an age limit for CLAT?
Not for the UG programme. The Consortium of NLUs states there is no upper age limit for CLAT 2027 UG, and students appearing in their Class 12 exams in March–April of the admission year can apply, provided they show proof of passing at admission.
What marks do I need in Class 12?
For CLAT 2027, at least 45% (40% for SC/ST/PwD candidates). Individual colleges outside CLAT may set higher cut-offs.
Can a Science or Commerce student do BA LLB?
Yes. Any stream is eligible. Commerce students often choose BBA LLB or B.Com LLB; Science students can pick B.Sc LLB where offered, which suits IP and technology law.
Five-year LLB or three-year LLB after graduation?
Five-year if you are sure about law — it saves a year and gets you into the NLUs. Three-year LLB after any degree if you want to decide later or add a technical background (engineering + LLB suits patent work).
Is coaching necessary for CLAT?
Not strictly. Many students clear it with self-study using past papers and regular reading of editorials. Coaching helps with practice tests and time management; it cannot replace reading every day.
What is the judiciary route?
After your law degree and enrolment, you can take your state's judicial service exam for Civil Judge (Junior Division). Rules on minimum years of practice before appearing have changed in recent years, so check the current rules for your state.
