B.Des in India — eligibility, exams, fees, careers

A B.Des trains you to design things people use — products, graphics and brands, apps and websites, clothes and textiles, furniture, interiors, exhibitions, films and animation — through studio projects, research with real users, and industry internships. It is taught at NID, NIFT, the IITs (through UCEED), and a growing number of state and private design schools. It suits students who notice how things look and work, like making and sketching, and want a creative career where the work is judged by a portfolio.

Know this. Design schools do not test what you studied in Class 12; they test how you observe, think and draw. Coaching can help with practice, but the students who do well usually spent months sketching real things and noticing how everyday objects and services work. Also note the 2027 change at NID: its three original campuses now admit to a 5.5-year integrated M.Des, while the newer NIDs still run a 4-year B.Des — read the handbook for the campus you want.

Who can apply

Class 12 pass in any stream. NIFT's B.Des requires the candidate to be under 24 years on 1 August of the admission year (5 years' relaxation for SC/ST/PwD). NID's age limit for 2027–28 admission is birth on or after 1 July 2006 for general and EWS candidates, with later cut-offs for reserved categories. UCEED (for IIT B.Des) has its own age and attempt limits.

How admission works

Each group of schools runs its own test, usually between December and February of Class 12, so plan to apply to several. NID's Design Aptitude Test has two stages: DAT Prelims (common for all NIDs, a written test) and DAT Mains for shortlisted candidates (studio test, interview and more); in 2027–28 NID Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru admit to a 5.5-year integrated M.Des, while NID Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh offer the 4-year B.Des, all through the same DAT. NIFT's entrance for B.Des is a General Ability Test and a Creative Ability Test, followed by a Situation Test for shortlisted candidates. IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad and other IITs/IIITDM admit to B.Des through UCEED and joint counselling. Private schools (Srishti, MIT-ID, Pearl, UID, Symbiosis, and others) run their own tests and portfolio reviews; some central universities use CUET-UG.

Is it you?

A good fit if

You keep sketching, making, rearranging or redesigning things around you
You enjoy solving a problem for someone else, not only self-expression
You can work for days on a project, take criticism and redo it
You are comfortable being judged on a portfolio rather than marks
You like both the creative and the practical side — materials, budgets, users

Think twice if

You want a scripted syllabus with clear right answers
You are joining because it seems easier than engineering; the workload is heavy and project-based
You cannot afford private-school fees and have not planned for NID, NIFT, IIT or state options
You dislike presenting and defending your work in front of juries

The honest part

Seats at NID, NIFT and IITs are few relative to applicants; apply to several schools in the same season
Design school is expensive and material-heavy even at government institutes
Placements are strongest in UX/interaction and weaker in craft and some fashion roles
Many private design schools have high fees and uneven outcomes; ask to see recent graduates' portfolios and where they work
The first job often matters less than the portfolio you build in the first three years

What it costs

Government: NID, NIFT and IIT B.Des: roughly ₹2.5–4.5 lakh a year including tuition (hostel extra); state design institutes can be lower.
Private: Private design schools: roughly ₹3–7 lakh a year; some cost more.
Help: Laptop, software, materials and field trips add a significant amount. NID, NIFT and IITs have fee concessions for SC/ST and need-based aid; IIT fee remission rules by family income apply to IIT B.Des students.

Starting pay

The spread is wide. UX and product designers from NID, IIT or top NIFT campuses often start around ₹6–15 lakh a year, with a few higher at large tech firms; graduates from smaller schools and in fashion or craft roles more commonly start at ₹3–6 lakh. Freelancers' income varies. Portfolio quality drives pay far more than the degree name.

Questions families ask

Can a Science or Commerce student do B.Des?

Yes. NID and NIFT B.Des accept any stream. NID's handbook explicitly lists Science, Arts, Commerce and Humanities.

Is there an age limit?

Yes, at the national schools. NIFT: under 24 on 1 August of the admission year, with 5 years' relaxation for SC/ST/PwD. NID (2027–28): born on or after 1 July 2006 for general and EWS candidates, 1 July 2003 for OBC-NCL/SC/ST, 1 July 2001 for PwD. UCEED sets its own limits; check its site.

What is in the NID DAT?

DAT Prelims is a common written test for all NIDs; shortlisted candidates take DAT Mains, which tests hands-on design ability in a studio setting, often with an interview. Prelims marks do not carry forward to Mains.

NID, NIFT or IIT — which is best?

They are strong in different areas. NID is known for product, communication, textile and animation design with a craft base; NIFT for fashion, textiles and fashion communication across many campuses; IIT B.Des for product and interaction design with engineering exposure. Choose by discipline, not name.

Can I do B.Des after a polytechnic diploma?

At NIFT, a 3- or 4-year engineering diploma recognised by AICTE or a state board after Class 10 is an accepted qualification. NIFT also runs a lateral-entry scheme into the second year of B.Des for eligible diploma holders.

Do I need an expensive laptop?

You will need a capable laptop by year 2 for most disciplines (UX, graphics, 3D). Some institutes have labs; ask seniors what they actually use before buying.
