BDS

The professional degree that makes you a dentist.

  • 5 years
  • Science (PCB) · Science (PCMB)
  • via NEET-UG

The professional degree that makes you a dentist. It combines basic medical sciences with a great deal of hands-on clinical and manual work on teeth, gums and jaws. Admission is through NEET-UG, the same exam as MBBS. Dental education, formerly regulated by the Dental Council of India, is now overseen by the National Dental Commission set up under the NDC Act, 2023. It suits students who like precise work with their hands and want a clinical career with a realistic path to their own practice.

Know this. India has many dental graduates for the number of salaried jobs, so early pay is often low. BDS works best for students who either plan an MDS or are ready to build their own practice over time. Before accepting an expensive private seat, compare the full cost with realistic income in the first five years, and confirm the college is recognised and the admission comes through official counselling.

Getting in

Bachelor of Dental Surgery

Who can apply

Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English. You must be at least 17 by 31 December of the admission year; there is no upper age limit. You must score at least the 50th percentile in NEET-UG (40th for SC, ST and OBC; 45th for general PwBD) to be eligible for admission.

How admission works

NEET-UG, conducted by NTA once a year, usually in May, is the only entrance for BDS. MCC runs counselling for BDS seats in the 15% All India Quota of state government dental colleges and in central institutions, central universities and deemed universities; the rest of the seats are filled by state counselling authorities, usually with domicile rules. BDS and MBBS seats appear in the same counselling, so you fill both in one choice list; students who narrowly miss MBBS often take a good government BDS seat. Rounds run roughly July to October. The dental regulator has warned students to take admission only through the authorised counselling and with a proper allotment letter; direct or 'management' offers outside counselling can leave you with an invalid admission.

Duration
5 years: 4 years of study plus 1 year of paid rotatory internship
Entrance
NEET-UG

What you study

  • Year 1: general human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, dental anatomy and histology
  • Year 2: general pathology and microbiology, pharmacology, dental materials, pre-clinical prosthodontics and conservative dentistry
  • Year 3: general medicine, general surgery, oral pathology, and clinical postings begin
  • Year 4: oral medicine and radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, periodontology, prosthodontics, conservative dentistry and endodontics, paediatric dentistry, public health dentistry
  • Year 5: one year of paid rotatory internship across dental departments and community outreach

Specialisations: Specialisation comes through MDS (via NEET-MDS): orthodontics, endodontics and conservative dentistry, prosthodontics and implantology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontology, paediatric dentistry, oral medicine and radiology, oral pathology, public health dentistry

Is it you?

A good fit if

  • You enjoy fine, careful work with your hands
  • You want a clinical career with a realistic path to running your own practice
  • You can talk patients through fear and discomfort calmly
  • Your family can support a few years of low income while you build experience or a practice

Think twice if

  • You are taking it only as a consolation for not getting MBBS and have no interest in dentistry
  • You expect a salaried job with high pay right after graduation
  • You dislike repetitive precision work or long hours standing at a chair
  • You cannot afford the cost of setting up equipment later

The honest part

  • Associate dentist salaries in cities can be lower than many families expect
  • MDS seats are limited and NEET-MDS is competitive
  • Setting up a clinic is expensive and needs business skills as well as clinical ones
  • The work is physically demanding on the back, neck and eyes
  • Rural and semi-urban areas often offer better opportunity than crowded metros

What it costs

Government
Government dental colleges charge roughly ₹10,000–1.5 lakh a year depending on the state
Private
Private and deemed colleges charge roughly ₹3–10 lakh a year; the full course can cost ₹20–50 lakh
Help
Students also buy instruments and materials during pre-clinical and clinical years. Setting up your own clinic later can cost ₹10–40 lakh depending on city and equipment. State fee reimbursement schemes for reserved categories apply as for MBBS.

Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

After this

Study next

Or start work as

  • Associate dentist in private clinics and dental chains (Clove, Sabka Dentist and similar)
  • Dental surgeon in state health services, ESIC, Railways and Armed Forces Dental Corps (through their own recruitment)
  • Dentist in hospitals and corporate health centres
  • Own clinic after a few years of experience
  • Clinical research, medical writing or dental product companies

Starting pay

Honest picture: many fresh BDS graduates earn roughly ₹15,000–40,000 a month as associate dentists in private clinics, especially in big cities where there are many dentists. Government dental surgeon posts pay more but are few. Income improves with experience, an MDS, and especially a well-run own practice, where earnings vary very widely by location and skill.

Questions families ask

Is BDS a good option if I do not get MBBS?

It can be, if you are genuinely interested in dentistry. A government BDS seat at low fees is a solid choice. An expensive private BDS seat taken only as a backup, without interest, often leads to regret.

How long is BDS?

Five years: four years of study and one year of paid rotatory internship. The dental regulator treats this 4+1 structure as the standard BDS course for MDS admission, government jobs and registration.

Can a BDS graduate become an MBBS doctor later?

Not directly. You would have to qualify NEET-UG and start MBBS again from the first year. Some BDS graduates move into public health, hospital administration or research instead.

Who regulates dental colleges now?

The National Dental Commission, established under the NDC Act, 2023, now oversees dental education and professionals, taking over from the Dental Council of India. Check the regulator's website for the list of recognised colleges.

Are there jobs abroad for Indian dentists?

Yes, but most countries (UK, US, Canada, Australia, Gulf) require their own licensing exams, which are expensive and take time. Plan for this as a separate multi-year project.
