Overview

Cover Poster

📖 Detailed Explanation

The essay opens with the author confessing that for some time his mind has been disturbed. Newspapers, radio and people's conversations are full of stories of fraud, cheating, dishonesty, bribery and black-marketing. Everywhere there is talk of fallen human values, and it seems as if honesty and goodness have vanished from the world. Reading and hearing all this, the author too begins to feel discouraged and asks himself whether one should really lose hope in humanity.

But the author refuses to accept this despair. He argues that our scriptures and our culture have always taught that the human being is essentially good and noble. We are the children of an ancient civilisation that placed truth, compassion and trust at its centre. If today some people behave dishonestly, it does not mean that the whole of humanity has become wicked. The bad incidents make news precisely because they are exceptions; the countless everyday acts of honesty and kindness go unreported because they are normal and natural.

To prove his point, the author narrates a personal experience. Once he was travelling by train. At a station he got down to fetch water and to buy something. By the time he returned, the train had begun to move. He somehow climbed back into a different compartment. In the rush he realised he had dropped his wallet (containing money and important papers) somewhere on the platform. He had given up all hope of getting it back.

A few days later, to his great surprise, the wallet reached him by post — with all the money and papers intact. Along with it came a letter from a poor, ordinary man who had found the wallet. The man wrote in simple language that he had found the wallet, taken the trouble to find the owner's address from the papers inside, and was returning it. He did not even keep a single rupee for himself, though he was clearly not well-off. This honesty of a poor stranger deeply moved the author and restored his faith in human goodness.

The author concludes that such examples are not rare; they are happening all around us all the time, only we fail to notice them because our attention is caught by the loud, bad news. Honesty, trust and goodness still form the living foundation of our society — that is why life continues smoothly. He therefore answers his own opening question: No, one should NOT lose hope. There is still so much goodness in human beings that we have every reason to remain hopeful and optimistic about humanity.

📝 Summary

In this essay, Hazariprasad Dwivedi reflects on the wave of bad news — fraud, dishonesty, bribery and corruption — that fills newspapers and conversations and makes people despair about human values. He admits that even his own mind grew troubled. But drawing on Indian culture, which holds that the human being is essentially good, he argues that the wicked are only a noticeable few; the silent majority lives honestly. He shares his own experience of losing his wallet on a railway journey, which a poor, unknown man honestly returned by post with all its money and papers intact, keeping nothing for himself. Such everyday goodness, the author says, is the true foundation of society. He concludes that we should NOT lose hope in humanity, for goodness and honesty are alive and well in the common people.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Kya Niraash Hua Jaye' (Should One Despair?) is a question that runs through the whole essay. The author begins by feeling disheartened by news of corruption, then examines whether such despair is justified, and through reasoning and a personal experience answers the question with a firm 'No'. The title is perfectly apt because the essay is essentially a debate with this single question and its hopeful answer — that there is still no reason to lose hope in human goodness.

Q. How does the author convince the reader that one should not lose hope in humanity? Explain with reference to the essay.

The author begins by honestly admitting that the flood of bad news — fraud, bribery, corruption — had troubled even his own mind. But instead of accepting despair, he reasons carefully. First, he reminds us that Indian culture and scriptures have always held the human being to be essentially good and noble. Second, he points out that bad deeds become news precisely because they are exceptions, while the countless everyday acts of honesty go unnoticed because they are normal. Third, and most powerfully, he gives a personal example: he lost his wallet full of money and papers on a railway platform, yet a poor, unknown man found it, traced his address, and returned everything by post without keeping a single rupee. This act of honesty by an ordinary, poor stranger proved to the author that goodness is alive and widespread. Through reasoning, cultural faith and lived experience together, he convinces the reader that we should remain hopeful and optimistic about humanity.

Q. What values does the lesson 'Kya Niraash Hua Jaye' teach us? How is it relevant to our daily life?

The lesson teaches us several important values: honesty, trust, optimism and faith in human goodness. It shows that even an ordinary poor person can display great integrity, reminding us that good character does not depend on wealth or status. It teaches us not to be discouraged by negative news but to look for the goodness that quietly surrounds us. In daily life this is very relevant: the media constantly highlights crime and corruption, which can make us cynical and fearful. This essay encourages us to keep our faith in people, to be honest ourselves, and to notice and appreciate the everyday kindness around us. Such an attitude makes us happier and helps build a more trusting, humane society.
