A five-year programme that takes you from Class 12 straight to a master's degree in basic science: physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, earth sciences or data science. The main homes are the seven IISERs, NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai, which were set up to train future scientists, with small classes, research labs and early research projects. It suits students who want a research career in science, in India or abroad.
Know this. These are research-first programmes. Families often compare IISERs with IITs on placement numbers, which is the wrong test: IISERs and NISER are not built around campus placement, and most students go to a PhD. If the student is clear they want industry jobs, engineering is usually a better fit; if they want to do science, these programmes are among the best in the country.

Five-year Integrated Bachelor's–Master's in Science (IISERs, NISER, UM-DAE CEBS, some IITs and central universities)
Who can apply
For IISERs (IAT 2026): Class 12 passed in the last two years or appearing this year, with at least three of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, and at least 60% aggregate across all subjects (55% for SC, ST and PwD). Some IISER programmes, such as Computational and Data Sciences at IISER Kolkata, require Mathematics. For NISER and UM-DAE CEBS (NEST 2026): at least three of the four basic sciences in Classes 11 and 12, Class 12 in the last two years or appearing this year, and at least 60% aggregate (lower for SC, ST and Divyangjan); no upper age limit.
How admission works
IISERs admit only through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), a computer-based test held once a year, usually in June, covering Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at Class 11–12 level. After results, a joint counselling on the IISER admission portal allots seats over several rounds in July–August; you pay a seat acceptance fee to hold an offer. NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai admit through NEST, a separate computer-based test usually held in June. Some IITs offer 5-year integrated M.Sc or dual-degree science programmes through JEE Advanced and JoSAA. Several central universities run integrated M.Sc programmes through CUET-UG. Serious aspirants usually take IAT and NEST both, and JEE Advanced if they are PCM.

The honest part

- Academic research jobs in India are limited and competitive; many PhDs go abroad for postdocs
- Some IISER campuses are young and away from big cities
- Switching to industry is possible, but you will need to build skills like programming and statistics yourself

- Few private options of this type; most private 'integrated M.Sc' programmes are ordinary B.Sc plus M.Sc
- Help
- Students admitted to the NISER and UM-DAE CEBS integrated M.Sc are eligible for the Department of Atomic Energy's DISHA scholarship of ₹60,000 a year plus a summer internship grant. Many IISER students receive the DST INSPIRE scholarship. Fee structures differ between IISERs, so check the one you are offered.

Starting pay
Most graduates go straight into a PhD, which pays a fixed fellowship set by the funding agency (UGC, CSIR, DST, DAE) rather than a salary. Those who move to industry after the five years typically start at roughly ₹5–12 lakh a year in data, analytics or R&D roles, with wide variation by subject and skills.

Questions families ask
Do IISERs still take JEE Advanced or KVPY ranks?
No. For 2026, IISERs state that admission is exclusively through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). KVPY was discontinued earlier. Check the IISER admission site each year in case the channels change.
Can a PCB student join an integrated M.Sc?
Yes. Both IISER and NEST ask for at least three of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, so PCB students are eligible. A few programmes, like data science, require Mathematics.
IISER or NISER, which is better?
Both are strong research-focused institutes. NISER and UM-DAE CEBS come with the DAE DISHA scholarship and links to atomic energy research; IISERs offer more locations and a wider range of majors. Visit the department pages for the subject you care about.
What if I want to leave after three or four years?
Some programmes allow an exit with a BS degree after four years, but rules differ by institute. Read the programme's exit rules before joining.
Is the integrated M.Sc recognised for jobs and PhDs abroad?
Yes. It is a master's degree and graduates regularly get PhD admissions in the US, Europe and elsewhere, as well as in India.
