Class 11–12 streams in India — eligibility, exams, fees, careers

After Class 10 most students stay in school and pick one of four subject groups for Class 11 and 12: PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Maths), PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Commerce, or Humanities (Arts). The choice decides which degree courses you can enter at 18, so it matters more than any single exam in Class 10. This page explains what each group contains, which doors it opens and closes, and how to choose without copying a friend or a cousin.

Know this. The stream you pick in Class 11 is not a verdict on how clever you are, and 'Science keeps every door open' is only half true: it keeps engineering and medicine open, but a student who dislikes Maths gets worse Class 12 marks in PCM than they would have in Commerce or Humanities, and those marks then close doors too. Many of the most selective routes after Class 12 — the national law universities through CLAT, NID and NIFT design, hotel management through NCHM JEE, BA programmes through CUET — accept any stream. Pick the stream whose subjects you will study willingly for two years, and check the exact subject rule of the one or two courses you are aiming at.

Who can apply

A Class 10 pass from any recognised board (CBSE, CISCE, a state board or NIOS). Schools set their own cut-offs for Science seats, often based on Class 10 marks in Maths and Science; the board itself does not set a national minimum.

How admission works

Admission is done by your school or a new school, usually right after Class 10 results in May–June. Many schools fill Science seats first by Class 10 marks, then Commerce, then Humanities; a few hold their own test. If your school does not offer the combination you want (for example Humanities with Maths, or PCMB), look at other schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, state junior colleges or NIOS rather than settling. In states with junior colleges (Maharashtra, Karnataka's PU colleges, Telangana and Andhra's intermediate colleges) the process is a centralised or college-level merit list instead of a school decision.

PCM: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, plus English and one optional (Computer Science, Economics, PE, a language)
PCB: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, plus English and one optional (Psychology, PE, Maths as a fifth subject if the school allows)
PCMB: all four sciences together; heavy, but keeps both engineering and medicine open
Commerce: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, English, plus Maths or Applied Maths or Informatics Practices
Humanities: English plus three or four of History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Fine Arts, a language, Maths or Legal Studies
Across streams: practicals and a project in most subjects; board exams at the end of Class 12 carry the marks colleges look at

Is it you?

A good fit if

PCM: you enjoy solving maths problems for their own sake, not only because marks were good in Class 10
PCB: you are comfortable with a lot of memory work and want a health or life-science career, knowing NEET is the gate to medicine
Commerce: you like numbers applied to money, business news interests you, and you are open to professional exams like CA
Humanities: you read and write easily, enjoy arguing both sides of an issue, and are aiming at law, design, psychology, media or civil services
Any stream: you have spoken to someone actually doing the job you picture, not just read a list of salaries

Think twice if

You are choosing Science only because it 'keeps options open' but you disliked Class 10 Maths — you will spend two years fighting the subject
You are choosing PCB for medicine without knowing that most NEET candidates do not get a government MBBS seat
You are avoiding Humanities because relatives call it the stream for weak students; law, design and civil services toppers regularly come from it
You want to switch stream later cheaply — changing after Class 11 usually means repeating the year

The honest part

JEE and NEET coaching starts in Class 11 for most serious candidates, so PCM and PCB students often carry two workloads — school and coaching — for two years
Some schools quietly push students with lower Class 10 marks into Commerce or Humanities to protect their board results; you can ask for the stream you want or move schools
Maths in Class 11 is a big jump from Class 10; students who scraped through Class 10 Maths often struggle in the first term
Changing streams after Class 11 is possible in some schools and through NIOS but usually costs a year
Humanities combinations vary a lot between schools; a school that offers only History, Political Science and Geography may not suit a student aiming at psychology or economics

What it costs

Government: Government and Kendriya Vidyalaya schools: nominal fees, often under ₹5,000–15,000 a year; state junior colleges similar.
Private: Private CBSE/ICSE schools: roughly ₹40,000–3 lakh a year depending on the city. Coaching for JEE/NEET alongside school adds ₹50,000–2.5 lakh a year; 'integrated' coaching-school tie-ups can cost more.

Class 12 alone mainly leads to government recruitment at the clerical and constable level (SSC CHSL, railway undergraduate posts, state police, Agniveer)
Private jobs straight after Class 12 are mostly in retail, BPO/customer support, delivery and sales, and rarely lead far without further study

Starting pay

Not a job qualification by itself. Jobs taken directly after Class 12 usually start around ₹12,000–25,000 a month in the private sector; central government Level-2 posts start higher once allowances are added. Pay depends far more on what you study after Class 12 than on the stream.

Questions families ask

Can I do engineering after Commerce or Humanities?

Not B.Tech through JEE; engineering degrees require Physics and Mathematics in Class 12. If you realise late that you want it, NIOS lets you add Physics or Maths as additional subjects, but plan for a year of catch-up. BCA and some computer courses accept Commerce students with Maths.

Is PCMB worth taking to keep both medicine and engineering open?

Only if you enjoy both Biology and Maths. It is the heaviest combination and most students end up focusing on one entrance exam anyway. If you are genuinely undecided, it can be worth it for Class 11, but talk to your school about dropping one subject's weight in Class 12.

Which stream is best for the IAS?

None is required; UPSC needs only a graduation degree in any subject. Humanities students often find the General Studies papers more familiar, but engineers and doctors clear it every year too. Choose the stream that suits your strengths now.

Do I need Maths in Commerce?

Not for B.Com at many colleges, but many good economics, B.Com (Hons) and BBA programmes, and most data or finance careers, expect Maths or Applied Maths in Class 12. Take it if you can manage it.

What about Class 10 students who do not want to stay in school?

There are real alternatives: a three-year polytechnic diploma, an ITI trade, agriculture diplomas, paramedical certificates, or NIOS if you want flexibility. Each is covered in its own section of this guide.
