📖 Detailed Explanation

When King Dasharath died of grief after Rama went into exile, Bharat and Shatrughna were away at their maternal grandfather's home. Messengers brought them back to Ayodhya. On reaching, Bharat learnt the whole truth — that his mother Kaikeyi had demanded two boons, sending Rama to the forest for fourteen years and asking the throne for Bharat, and that the shock had killed his father. Bharat was filled with deep grief and anger.

Bharat was very angry with his mother Kaikeyi. He clearly told her that he did not want the throne at all. For him, Rama alone was the rightful king of Ayodhya. He felt ashamed that people might think he wanted the kingdom. After performing the last rites of his father, Bharat decided to go to the forest and bring Rama back to Ayodhya.

Bharat set out for the forest with the queens, ministers, soldiers and a large crowd of citizens of Ayodhya. The people of Ayodhya loved Rama and also wished to bring him home. On the way they crossed the river and reached the hermitage of sage Bharadwaj, who welcomed them warmly and told them that Rama was staying at Chitrakoot. Guided further, the great procession moved towards Chitrakoot.

At Chitrakoot, Lakshman saw the dust and crowd from afar and grew suspicious. He thought Bharat was coming with an army to attack them, and became angry, ready to fight. But Rama calmed him, saying that Bharat could never do such a thing. Rama trusted his brother's pure heart completely and told Lakshman that Bharat must be coming only out of love to meet them.

When Bharat reached Rama, he fell at his feet and wept. He told Rama about their father's death. Both brothers were overcome with grief. Bharat begged Rama again and again to return to Ayodhya and rule as king. But Rama gently refused. He said that he must obey his father's promise and complete the fourteen years of exile, for keeping one's word and a father's command was the highest duty.

Seeing Rama firm in his decision, Bharat made a request. He asked Rama to give him his wooden sandals (charan paaduka). Bharat said he would place the sandals on the throne and rule Ayodhya in Rama's name, only as his servant, until Rama returned. Rama gave his sandals to Bharat. With the sacred sandals on his head, Bharat returned to Ayodhya. He did not live in the palace but stayed in a village called Nandigram, living simply like an ascetic, and ruled in Rama's name for fourteen years.
