📖 Detailed Explanation

Read in English

King Dasharatha of Ayodhya decided to crown Rama, his eldest and most beloved son, as the prince (Yuvaraj). The whole city of Ayodhya was filled with joy. People began decorating their homes and the streets, preparing to celebrate the grand event of Rama's coronation the very next day.

Read in English

Queen Kaikeyi had a maidservant named Manthara. Manthara was crooked and clever. When she saw the city being decorated and learned that Rama was to become Yuvaraj, jealousy filled her heart. She thought this was wrong and at once ran to Kaikeyi to poison her mind.

Read in English

At first Kaikeyi was very happy to hear that Rama would become king, because she loved Rama as much as her own son Bharata. She even gave Manthara a gift of joy. But Manthara threw the gift away and kept telling Kaikeyi again and again that Rama becoming king would be a great misfortune for her and for Bharata.

Read in English

Manthara filled Kaikeyi's mind with fear. She said that once Rama became king, Bharata would always remain his servant and Kaikeyi would lose all her honour. Slowly Manthara's poisonous words began to work, and Kaikeyi's happiness turned into worry and anger.

Read in English

Manthara then reminded Kaikeyi of two boons. Long ago, in a battle between the gods and demons, Kaikeyi had helped King Dasharatha and saved his life. Pleased with her, Dasharatha had promised her two boons (vardaan), which Kaikeyi had not yet used. Manthara advised her to ask for those two boons now.

Read in English

Manthara taught Kaikeyi to ask for two things: first, that Bharata be made the king of Ayodhya, and second, that Rama be sent away to live in the forest for fourteen years. Kaikeyi, now under Manthara's influence, agreed to this cruel plan.

Read in English

Kaikeyi went into the 'kop-bhavan' (the chamber of anger). She took off her ornaments, threw them on the floor, and lay down on the ground, full of anger. When King Dasharatha came and saw his beloved queen in such a state, he was greatly worried and asked her what she wanted, promising to fulfil any wish.

Read in English

Reminding Dasharatha of his old promise, Kaikeyi demanded her two boons — the throne for Bharata and fourteen years of exile for Rama. Hearing this, Dasharatha was shattered. He begged and pleaded with her, but Kaikeyi did not change her mind. Bound by his word, the helpless king could not refuse. This is how the two boons turned the joy of Ayodhya into deep sorrow.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Read in English

We should never let jealousy enter our hearts, nor listen to those who give wicked advice. At the same time, one must always honour one's promise, for truth and the given word are precious.

Justification of the Title
