📖 Detailed Explanation

After defeating Ravana in Lanka and freeing Sita, Rama's fourteen years of exile were now complete. Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, along with Vibhishana, Sugriva and the army of monkeys, prepared to return to Ayodhya. They travelled in the Pushpak Vimana, the wonderful flying chariot. On the way Rama lovingly showed Sita the places where they had wandered during their exile, and the spots connected with the war.

Rama remembered that Bharata was waiting for him at Nandigram. So he sent Hanuman ahead to give Bharata the happy news that Rama was returning. Bharata had vowed that if Rama did not return on the very day the exile ended, he would give up his life. When Hanuman brought the news, Bharata was overjoyed. He had ruled Ayodhya all these years only as Rama's servant, keeping Rama's wooden sandals (charan-paduka) on the throne.

When Rama reached Ayodhya, the whole city welcomed him with great joy. Houses were decorated, lamps were lit and people came out to see their beloved prince. Bharata ran to meet Rama and fell at his feet. Mother Kaushalya, Sumitra and even Kaikeyi greeted him. Rama met everyone with love and respect, and embraced his brothers.

Then came the long-awaited moment. The sage Vasishtha and the other priests performed the coronation (rajyabhishek). Rama was bathed in holy water and seated on the throne of Ayodhya. With Sita beside him, Rama was crowned king. Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna stood by his side, and Hanuman remained at his feet as a devoted servant.

Rama then gave gifts to all who had helped him. He honoured Sugriva, Vibhishana, Hanuman and the other friends. The reign of Rama, known as 'Ram-rajya', began. Under his rule there was peace, justice and happiness everywhere. No one was unhappy; the people were truthful and the kingdom prospered. 'Ram-rajya' became the ideal example of a perfect and just kingdom.
