📖 Detailed Explanation

Read in English

After crossing the sea by building the great bridge (Setu), Rama's vanar army reached Lanka and laid siege to it. Rama, ever just and merciful, did not wish to begin the war without one last effort for peace. He sent Angad as a messenger to Ravana, advising him to return Sita with honour and avoid needless bloodshed. But the proud Ravana, blinded by arrogance, refused and insulted the envoy. War now became unavoidable.

Read in English

A terrible war broke out between the vanar army and the rakshasas. Brave warriors fought on both sides. Ravana's son Indrajit (Meghnad) used his magical powers and struck both Rama and Lakshmana with the deadly Nagpash (serpent-arrows), binding them senseless. The vanar army was filled with despair, but Garuda, the king of birds and enemy of serpents, arrived and freed Rama and Lakshmana, restoring their strength.

Read in English

In the fierce fighting Lakshmana was gravely wounded by Meghnad's powerful weapon and fell unconscious. The only cure was the Sanjivani herb growing on a far-off Himalayan mountain. The mighty Hanuman flew through the night, and when he could not identify the single herb, he lifted the entire mountain and carried it back. The physician Sushen administered the herb and Lakshmana revived, bringing great joy to all.

Read in English

Seeing his warriors fall one by one, Ravana sent his giant brother Kumbhakarna into battle. Kumbhakarna fought ferociously and caused great destruction, but at last Rama killed him with his arrows. Then the brave Meghnad too was slain by Lakshmana. With his greatest warriors dead, Ravana himself finally entered the battlefield to face Rama.

Read in English

The final battle between Rama and Ravana was awe-inspiring. As often as Rama cut off Ravana's ten heads, they grew again, for the secret of his life lay in the nectar hidden in his navel. Vibhishan revealed this secret. Rama then took up the divine arrow given by the gods, aimed it at Ravana's navel, and released it. Ravana fell dead, and with him fell evil itself. The gods rained flowers, and joy spread everywhere.

Read in English

After the victory, Rama crowned the righteous Vibhishan as the king of Lanka. Sita was brought back with honour. With evil destroyed and dharma re-established, Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and the loyal companions prepared to return to Ayodhya. The conquest of Lanka thus marked the triumph of truth, courage and goodness over pride and cruelty.
