About the author: The author beautifully portrays the relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing the importance of trees in sustaining life and inspiring respect for the environment.

✍️ About the Author / Poet

Adrienne Rich (1929-2012) was a celebrated American poet, essayist and feminist who is widely regarded as one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she published her first collection, 'A Change of World', in 1951 while still a student at Radcliffe College, and it won the Yale Younger Poets Award. Her early work was formal and controlled, but over time her poetry grew bolder, more political and deeply concerned with the experience of women, oppression, social justice and the relationship between human beings and nature. Major works include 'Diving into the Wreck' and 'The Dream of a Common Language'. 'The Trees' belongs to her transitional phase and uses the image of houseplants moving out of a house into a forest as an extended metaphor. On the surface it is about nature reclaiming its rightful place, but beneath the surface it speaks of women breaking free from the confined, domestic spaces society has imposed on them, and of all oppressed people moving towards freedom and their natural environment.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

The trees inside are moving out into the forest,
the forest that was empty all these days
where no bird could sit
no insect hide
no sun bury its feet in shadow
the forest that was empty all these days
now is full of trees by morning.

The poem opens with the striking image of trees that were kept inside a house now moving out into the forest. The forest had been empty all this time, so empty that no bird could perch on a branch, no insect could find a hiding place, and the sun could not even bury its feet (its rays) in the cool shadow of leaves. But now, by morning, that empty forest will be full of trees. This symbolises nature, and by extension women and oppressed beings, returning to where they truly belong after a long confinement.

All night the roots work
to disengage themselves from the cracks
in the veranda floor.
The leaves strain toward the glass
small twigs stiff with exertion
long-cramped boughs shuffling under the roof
like newly discharged patients
half-dazed, moving
to the clinic doors.

Here the poet describes the painful struggle of escape. All through the night the roots work hard to free themselves from the cracks in the veranda floor where they had been trapped. The leaves push and strain toward the glass window, the small twigs grow stiff with the effort, and the long-cramped branches shuffle awkwardly under the roof. The poet compares them to patients who have just been discharged from a hospital, half-dazed and weak, slowly moving towards the clinic doors to freedom. The simile beautifully captures the difficulty and the hope of regaining a long-denied liberty.

I sit inside, doors open to the veranda
writing long letters
in which I scarcely mention the departure
of the forest from the house.
The night is fresh, the whole moon shines
in a sky still open
the smell of leaves and lichen
still reaches like a voice into the rooms.

Now the poet brings herself into the poem. She sits inside the house with the doors open to the veranda, writing long letters in which she barely mentions this great departure of the forest from the house, as though pretending not to notice this momentous event. The night is fresh and the full moon shines in a sky that is still open and free. The smell of leaves and lichen drifts in from outside and reaches into the rooms like a voice, calling her too towards nature and freedom. The poet's quiet, almost indifferent tone hides the deep significance of what is happening.

My head is full of whispers
which tomorrow will be silent.
Listen. The glass is breaking.
The trees are stumbling forward
into the night. Winds rush to meet them.
The moon is broken like a mirror,
its pieces flash now in the crown
of the tallest oak.

In the final stanza the poet's head is full of whispers, the soft sounds of the moving trees, which will be silent by tomorrow once they have all escaped. She urges us to listen as the glass breaks, the final barrier between the trees and freedom shattering at last. The trees stumble forward into the night, and the winds rush eagerly to welcome them. The moon appears broken like a mirror, and its scattered, flashing pieces shine in the crown (top branches) of the tallest oak tree. The image conveys the triumphant moment of liberation, with nature joyously reclaiming its world.

📝 Summary

The poem 'The Trees' by Adrienne Rich describes house trees or potted plants moving out of a house into a forest that has long been empty. Because the forest had no trees, no bird could sit there, no insect could hide, and the sun could not rest in shadow. Now the trees struggle all night to free their roots from the veranda floor; their leaves, twigs and branches strain towards the glass like weak patients newly discharged from a hospital. The poet sits inside writing letters, scarcely mentioning this departure, while the fresh night, the full moon and the smell of leaves call to her. At last the glass breaks, the trees stumble out into the night, the winds rush to greet them, and the broken moon flashes in the crown of the tallest oak. On a deeper level the poem is an allegory for women and all oppressed beings breaking free from confinement to return to their natural, rightful place of freedom.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of the poem is the irrepressible urge of nature, and of all confined or oppressed beings, to break free from artificial captivity and return to their natural environment. Through the image of trees escaping from a house into the forest, Adrienne Rich symbolises the struggle of women to liberate themselves from the narrow domestic spaces imposed on them by society, and more broadly the triumph of freedom over confinement. Nature cannot be permanently caged; it will always reclaim its rightful place.

🎯 Themes

  • Freedom versus confinement: The poem's strongest theme is the contrast between captivity and liberty. The trees, long held inside, struggle painfully but persistently to break out into the open forest, showing that the desire for freedom is natural and unstoppable.

  • The liberation of women: On an allegorical level the trees represent women breaking free from the confined domestic roles and spaces that patriarchal society has forced upon them, returning to their full natural identity and independence.

  • Man versus nature and the reclaiming of natural order: The poem suggests that human attempts to control and domesticate nature are temporary. Nature will inevitably reassert itself and restore the natural balance, as the forest fills with trees again.

  • Quiet complicity and awakening: The poet sitting inside, writing letters and 'scarcely' mentioning the departure, reflects how people often ignore or downplay great changes happening around them, even as the call of freedom reaches into their rooms.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poem conveys the powerful message that confinement, whether of nature, of women, or of any oppressed group, can never be permanent. The natural urge for freedom is irresistible and will ultimately break every barrier, however strong. It also urges human beings not to remain passive or indifferent spectators but to recognise and respect the right of all living things to live freely in their own natural environment, and to be conscious participants in the movement towards liberation.

Justification of the Title

The title 'The Trees' is apt and symbolic. Literally, the entire poem revolves around trees moving out of a house into an empty forest, making them the central image and active agents of the poem. Symbolically, the trees stand for women, for all oppressed beings, and for nature itself, all striving to break free from confinement and return to freedom. By naming the poem simply 'The Trees', Adrienne Rich keeps the literal picture clear while leaving the rich symbolic meanings open to the reader, making the title both literally accurate and thematically powerful.

Short Answer Questions
Q. Why had the forest been empty all these days?

The forest had been empty because it had no trees. Without trees, no bird could sit there, no insect could hide, and the sun could not bury its feet in the shade. The trees that belonged to the forest had been kept confined inside the house, leaving the forest bare and lifeless.

Q. What does the poet compare the trees to as they move out, and why is the comparison effective?

The poet compares the trees to newly discharged patients who are half-dazed and slowly moving towards the clinic doors. The comparison is effective because, like such patients, the long-cramped trees are weak and unsteady after their confinement, yet they are determined to move towards freedom. It captures both their suffering and their hope.

Q. What is the poet doing while the trees are escaping, and what does it suggest?

While the trees are escaping, the poet sits inside the house with the doors open to the veranda, writing long letters in which she scarcely mentions this great departure. Long Answer Questions
Q. The poem 'The Trees' works on two levels—the literal and the symbolic. Discuss how Adrienne Rich uses the image of escaping trees to convey a deeper message about freedom and the liberation of women.

On the literal level, 'The Trees' describes potted trees kept inside a house that struggle all night to free their roots from the veranda floor and finally move out into an empty forest, restoring it to life. The roots work to disengage themselves, the leaves and twigs strain towards the glass, and at last the glass breaks and the trees stumble out into the welcoming night. On the symbolic level, however, the house represents confinement and the narrow, restricted spaces that society imposes, while the forest represents freedom and one's natural, rightful place. The trees symbolise women, and indeed all oppressed beings, who have long been forced into limited domestic roles. Their painful but determined struggle to escape mirrors the women's movement towards independence and self-fulfilment. The breaking glass symbolises the shattering of every barrier and restriction. The poet sitting inside, scarcely mentioning the departure, hints at the world's tendency to ignore such liberation even as its call reaches into every room. Through this sustained allegory, Adrienne Rich conveys that the urge for freedom is natural and irresistible, that confinement can never be permanent, and that women and all suppressed beings will ultimately reclaim their freedom and their place in the world, just as nature reclaims the empty forest.

Q. How does Adrienne Rich use literary devices such as personification, simile, imagery and symbolism to bring the poem 'The Trees' to life? Explain with examples.

Adrienne Rich brings 'The Trees' vividly to life through a skilful blend of literary devices. The dominant device is personification: the roots 'work' to disengage themselves, the leaves 'strain' towards the glass, the trees are 'stumbling forward', and the winds 'rush to meet them', giving nature human will, struggle and purpose. The poem's most memorable simile compares the cramped branches to 'newly discharged patients, half-dazed, moving to the clinic doors', capturing both the weakness and the hopeful determination of the escaping trees. Rich uses rich sensory imagery throughout—the empty forest where no bird could sit, the smell of leaves and lichen drifting into the rooms, the fresh night with the whole moon shining, and the striking final image of the moon 'broken like a mirror' with its pieces flashing in the crown of the tallest oak. Symbolism deepens the meaning: the house and glass stand for confinement and barriers, the forest for freedom, and the breaking glass for the shattering of all restraints. The repetition of 'the forest that was empty all these days' emphasises the long deprivation now ending. Together, these devices transform a simple scene of trees moving outdoors into a powerful, layered statement about the unstoppable journey from captivity to freedom.

'the forest that was empty all these days' की पुनरावृत्ति उस लंबे अभाव पर बल देती है जो अब समाप्त हो रहा है।
