Suddenly he sees another black aeroplane flying beside him, with no lights on its wings. The pilot of that strange plane signals him to follow. With no instruments and almost no fuel, the narrator obeys, trusting the mysterious pilot. He follows the black aeroplane through the storm for half an hour until the strange plane leads him safely out of the cloud and points downward to a runway.

When he looked for the black aeroplane to thank the pilot, it had vanished. At the control tower, the woman on duty told him that no other plane had been flying that night and that his was the only aircraft on the radar. The ending remains a mystery because there is no logical explanation for who the helpful pilot was: a real plane could not have flown unrecorded, yet someone clearly guided the narrator to safety, risking his own life. The unexplained rescue leaves the reader, like the narrator, wondering in awe.
