Overview

Awake, O traveller, you have to journey far! The eternally wedded night lies asleep, having strewn a bed of pearls (dewdrops/stars). But you must rise from this comfortable bed and win for yourself the whole wealth of light. Awake — you have a long way to go!

Now you must take firm steps on the red, dawn-lit path and sing the song of life. Awake, for you must go far! How long, O intoxicated one, have you slept? Awake — for the eyes of the awakening world have wept to see you abandoning the night's slumber and the call of duty.

📝 Summary
'Jaag Tujhko Door Jaana' is an inspirational lyric by Mahadevi Verma in which she calls upon the human soul (and especially the awakening Indian woman/individual) to rise from the comfortable sleep of inertia, attachment and self-pity, and to set out on a long and arduous journey towards light, self-realisation and a higher goal. The poet personifies the night as a contented, eternally-wedded bride who has spread a soft bed of pearls (dew and stars) to lull the soul to sleep. But she insists that one must abandon this luxury, take firm steps on the red, dawn-lit path, and sing the song of life. She points out that much of the night has passed, the stars are setting, golden buds have bloomed at the touch of the first rays and birds are singing — all of nature is awake, only the sleeper lingers. The road ahead is full of terrifying tides, ebbs and fierce storms, yet she urges the traveller to march on relentlessly, even along the path of destruction, and to keep singing a new song of light. The poem is thus a stirring call to awakening, ceaseless effort and fearless progress.

The title 'Jaag Tujhko Door Jaana' (Awake, You Have to Go Far) is perfectly apt because it is both the opening line and the recurring refrain of the poem, capturing its entire spirit in five words. 'Jaag' (awake) embodies the central call to rouse the soul from the sleep of inertia, while 'Door Jaana' (you have to go far) sums up the long, demanding journey of life and self-realisation that lies ahead. The whole poem is an elaboration of this single command — to wake up and to keep travelling towards the light — so the title encapsulates the theme, the tone of urgency and the message all at once.

In this lyric Mahadevi Verma makes a powerful, repeated call to the human soul to awaken from the sleep of inertia, attachment and self-satisfaction. She personifies the night as a contented, eternally-wedded bride who has spread a soft bed of pearls (dew and stars) to keep the soul asleep, but she insists that one must rise from this comfort to win 'the whole wealth of light' — the symbol of knowledge, self-realisation and life's ultimate goal. She points out that much of the night has passed, the stars are setting, golden buds have bloomed and birds are singing; all of nature is awake, only the soul still sleeps. The path ahead is long and frightening, full of tides, ebbs and fierce storms, yet she urges the traveller to take firm steps on the red, dawn-lit road, to sing the song of life, and to march on relentlessly — even through destruction — singing a new song of light. The central idea is thus a clarion call to awakening and ceaseless, fearless striving. Its message is that we must never be lulled into laziness or complacency; life is a long journey towards a noble goal, and we must rise above both comfort and obstacles, moving forward with courage, effort and unbroken hope until we attain the light of self-realisation. The poem also carries a contemporary resonance — a call to women and to the nation to awaken and become self-reliant.

The poem bears all the distinctive marks of Chhayavad. First, its rich symbolism: night stands for inertia and ignorance, light ('jyoti') for knowledge and the soul's goal, the bed of pearls for the seductive comfort of ease, and the tides and storms for life's obstacles — abstract spiritual ideas are conveyed through concrete natural symbols. Second, its delicate imagery and personification: the night becomes an eternally-wedded bride who 'sleeps' and 'spreads a bed of pearls', golden buds bloom at the 'soft touch' of the rays, and birds warble at dawn — abstract nature is humanised and painted in vivid visual and auditory pictures, a hallmark of Chhayavadi style. Third, its musical, lyrical quality: the recurring refrain 'Jaag tujhko door jaana', the alliteration of 'kanak-kaliyan' and 'vaat-jhanjha-veg', and the soft, flowing Khari Boli give the poem a song-like rhythm. Finally, the typically Chhayavadi blend of personal emotion (vedana, longing) with a larger spiritual and inspirational vision — the inward journey of the soul towards light — makes it a fine representative of Mahadevi's mystical romanticism. Thus, in theme, technique and tone, the poem is a model Chhayavadi composition.
