Overview

About the author: Kabir (c. 1398-1518) is among the greatest saint-poets of the Hindi Bhakti tradition and the foremost voice of the Nirgun (formless God) and Gyanashrayi (knowledge-based) stream of saint poetry. According to legend he was raised by a Muslim weaver couple, Niru and Nima, in Kashi (Varanasi), and remained a weaver by trade his whole life. He is regarded as a disciple of the saint Ramananda. Unlettered in the formal sense ('मसि कागद छुयो नहीं'), Kabir composed in the spoken 'Sadhukkari' or 'Panchmel khichdi' language, blending Khari Boli, Awadhi, Brij, Punjabi and Rajasthani. His verse is fearless and reformist: he attacked hollow ritualism, idol-worship, the caste system, and the hypocrisy of both Hindu pandits and Muslim mullahs with equal sharpness. His compositions are collected in the 'Bijak' (Sakhi, Sabad and Ramaini) and were also included by the Sikh Gurus in the Guru Granth Sahib. He preached love, an inner formless God, the importance of the true Guru, and self-realisation.

I have known the One as One alone. Those who speak of duality (two)—who have failed to recognise the truth—I count among the ignorant. It is one and the same air, one and the same water, one same light pervading all. From one and the same clay are all the vessels shaped, and one same potter has kneaded them. Just as a carpenter cuts only the wood but cannot cut the fire (life-force) within it, so You alone, O Lord, pervade within every body and hold the same form everywhere. Seeing Maya (illusion/wealth) the whole world is enticed—why then, O man, do you swell with pride? Kabir says: the one who has become fearless, whom nothing afflicts, is rightly called God-intoxicated (mad).

O saints, I see the world has gone mad. If I speak the truth they rush to beat me; the world has put its faith in falsehood. I saw the ritualist, I saw the so-called religious man who bathes at dawn; he kills the inner soul yet worships a stone—what can such practice show him? If one could attain Hari merely by shaving the head, then everyone has shaved it. The sheep that is shorn again and again never met Hari by it. The egg-born, the womb-born, the sweat/moisture-born, the plant-born—You alone dwell in every body. The clever one who turns inward becomes wise; the world, turned the wrong way, trusts in falsehood. The Hindu says Ram is dear to him, the Muslim says Rahim; fighting one another both die, and neither grasps the real mystery. I have seen many pirs and awliyas who read the Book, the Quran; many go about making disciples but know nothing in the heart. Where is the compassion of the Hindu, the mercy of the Muslim—both have driven knowledge out of their hearts. Says Kabir: listen, O saints, all this is being lost in mere delusion.

📝 Summary
These two pads of Kabir present the core of his Nirgun bhakti and his fearless social reform. In the first pad, 'हम तौ एक एक करि जांनां', Kabir declares the absolute oneness (Advaita) of God. There is one God pervading all creation; those who see duality are ignorant. He gives concrete proofs from daily life: the same air, water and light are in everyone; just as one potter shapes all pots from the same clay, one God dwells in all bodies. As a carpenter can cut wood but not the fire within it, the body may perish but the indwelling soul cannot be destroyed. He warns man not to be proud, for the whole world is merely deluded by Maya; the truly fearless devotee, untouched by attachment, is the real God-intoxicated saint. In the second pad, 'संतो देखत जग बौरांना', Kabir cries out that the world has gone mad—it beats the truthful and believes in falsehood. He ridicules empty ritualism (bathing, idol-worship, head-shaving) which cannot lead to God while one kills the inner soul. He attacks Hindu-Muslim conflict: both call God by names (Ram, Rahim) and kill each other without grasping the one truth; pandits and maulvis read scriptures and make disciples but have no real knowledge in the heart, and have lost all compassion. Kabir appeals to the saints to wake from this collective delusion.

💡 Central Idea
God is one, formless and present equally in every being; therefore distinctions of religion, ritual and caste are meaningless. True devotion lies in inner self-realisation, fearlessness and love, not in outer show, idol-worship or sectarian quarrels.

🎯 Themes
Oneness of God (Nirgun, formless unity): A single divine power pervades all creation—same air, water and light in every being—so the perception of duality is ignorance.

Criticism of empty ritualism and idol-worship: Bathing, shaving the head, stone-worship and outer religiosity are useless if the inner soul is neglected; God cannot be attained by mere external acts.

Hindu-Muslim unity and condemnation of religious bigotry: Ram and Rahim are names of the one God; pandits and maulvis quarrel and mislead people while losing compassion and true knowledge.

True devotion as inner realisation and fearlessness: Real worship is self-knowledge, freedom from pride and Maya, and a fearless love-intoxicated surrender to the formless God.

🧭 Message & Title
Kabir's message is to look beyond outer labels and rituals to the one God who lives within every heart. We must give up pride, sectarian hatred and hollow show, and seek God through honesty, compassion, inner self-knowledge and fearless love. Religious quarrels between Hindu and Muslim are a tragic delusion, for both worship the same divine reality.

The title 'Kabir ke Pad' (Verses/Songs of Kabir) is apt because these are devotional 'pads'—a lyrical, sung form of the saint tradition meant to be set to music. Both compositions carry Kabir's signature 'bhanita' (कहै कबीर) and his unmistakable themes of one formless God, anti-ritualism and social reform. The simple, direct title rightly foregrounds the poet and the verse-form rather than any single subject, letting the reader receive Kabir's complete vision.

🎓 Exam Questions & Answers
Kabir means that he has realised God as One alone—a single formless reality pervading all creation. Those who believe in duality have not recognised the truth and are, in his view, ignorant.

Kabir says all vessels are shaped from one clay by one potter ('एकै खाक गढ़े सब भांडैं एकै कोंहरा सांनां'). Just so, all beings, though outwardly different, are made of and contain the one same God.

Because the world has lost its reason: it attacks those who speak the truth, trusts falsehood, clings to empty rituals and fights over religion instead of recognising the one God. To Kabir this senseless behaviour shows the world has gone mad.

It means the Hindu loves God by the name Ram and the Muslim by the name Rahim. Kabir points out that both are merely different names of the same one God, yet people fight and die over this false difference.

In the first pad Kabir declares his core belief that God is One and formless, and that perceiving duality is ignorance. To make this abstract truth convincing, he draws examples from everyday life. He says the same air, the same water and the same light (jyoti) are present in every being—the basic elements of life are common to all. He then gives the famous potter analogy: from one clay one potter shapes countless vessels of different shapes and uses; likewise one God fashions and dwells within all differently-shaped beings. Through the carpenter image he separates body from soul—a carpenter can cut wood but cannot cut the fire (life) within it, so the body may be destroyed but the indwelling soul is indestructible and the same in all. Finally he warns against pride and attachment: the whole world is deluded by Maya, so man has no reason to be arrogant. The truly fearless devotee, untouched by attachment or fear, is the real lover 'mad' for God. The message is that recognising the one divine self in all creation, and living free of pride, fear and illusion, is true devotion.

In the second pad Kabir launches a fearless attack on hollow religion. He mocks the ritualist who bathes at dawn and worships a stone idol while 'killing' his inner soul—such outer acts cannot reveal God. He ridicules head-shaving as a path to salvation: if shaving the head pleased God, the sheep, shorn again and again, would have reached Him first. He condemns sectarian conflict: the Hindu clings to the name Ram, the Muslim to Rahim, and both fight and die without grasping that these are names of one God. He exposes pandits and maulvis who read the Vedas and the Quran and gather disciples yet have no real knowledge in the heart and have lost all compassion and mercy. Against all this, Kabir's vision of true religion is inward and universal: God is one and dwells in every being—egg-born, womb-born, sweat-born and plant-born alike. Real worship is to 'turn inward' (उलटि), to attain self-knowledge, compassion and love, not outer show or hatred. He pleads with the saints to awaken from this collective delusion (भरम).
