Antra Poem

Overview

About the author: Surdas (c. 1478–1583) is regarded as the greatest poet of the Krishna-bhakti (saguna) stream of the Bhakti movement and the brightest sun of the 'Ashtachhap' group of poets associated with the Vallabh (Pushti-marg) sect. He is traditionally believed to have been blind, yet his poetry contains such vivid and minute pictures of Krishna's childhood (vatsalya), his pranks, and the love-sports of Braj that the depth of his inner vision astonishes readers. His chief works are 'Sur-sagar', 'Sur-saravali' and 'Sahitya-lahari'. Within 'Sur-sagar', the section known as 'Bhramargeet' is especially famous, in which the gopis, through their witty and emotional replies to Uddhav, defend the path of saguna love-devotion against the dry path of nirguna knowledge. Surdas composed in the Braj Bhasha and is celebrated as a master of both vatsalya-rasa (the sentiment of parental love) and shringar-rasa (the sentiment of love).

✍️ About the Author / Poet

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

(In sharp, ironic praise the gopis say to Uddhav:) O Uddhav, you are indeed very fortunate! You remain untouched, aloof from the very thread of love; your mind is not coloured by attachment to anyone. You are like a lotus-leaf that lives within the water yet is never wetted or stained by it; like a pitcher of oil set in water, on which not a single drop of water clings. You never dipped even a foot into the river of love, nor was your sight ever drawn to (captivated by) the beauty of any form. And we, says Surdas, are simple, foolish women, ignorant ones — stuck fast in love for Krishna like an ant glued helplessly to lump-sugar (gur).

The longing of our hearts has remained shut up within our hearts alone. To whom, O Uddhav, shall we go and tell it? It cannot even be uttered in words. The hope and the promise of his return was the only support on which we bore all the suffering of body and mind. But now, hearing again and again these messages of yoga (nirguna meditation), we love-lorn women are being scorched even more by the fire of separation. From the very side from which we hoped for rescue (Mathura, from Krishna), from that very side has flowed the flood (of this dry yoga that drowns us). Surdas says: now how can we hold on to patience — for even the bounds of decorum and propriety (maryada) have not been kept (by Krishna towards us)?

These two pads are taken from the 'Bhramargeet' section of Surdas's 'Sur-sagar'. After Krishna leaves Braj for Mathura, he sends his learned friend Uddhav to console the gopis with a message of nirguna knowledge and yoga, advising them to give up their attachment to the saguna (embodied) Krishna and meditate on the formless Brahman. The gopis, however, are steeped in pure, selfless love for Krishna. In the first pad they reply to Uddhav with sharp irony: they 'congratulate' him on being so fortunate as to remain wholly untouched by love — like a lotus-leaf in water, or an oil-pot in water on which not a drop sticks. He has never even dipped a foot in the river of love, while they, simple women, are stuck to Krishna like an ant to lump-sugar. In the second pad, their tone turns from satire to pathos: the agony of separation locked in their hearts cannot even be spoken; their only support was the hope of Krishna's return, but Uddhav's messages of yoga have only deepened the fire of viraha. The very direction from which they expected rescue has instead sent a current that drowns them, and Krishna himself has failed to keep the bounds of love. Through the gopis' words Surdas establishes the supremacy of saguna love-devotion over dry nirguna knowledge.

💡 Central Idea

Read in English

Through the gopis' witty yet anguished reply to Uddhav, Surdas asserts the supremacy of saguna, selfless love-devotion (prem-bhakti) over the cold, formless path of nirguna knowledge and yoga; true love, once rooted, cannot be uprooted by mere intellectual instruction, and separation from the beloved becomes an unbearable fire.

🎯 Themes

    Read in English

Supremacy of saguna prem-bhakti over nirguna gyan-yoga: the central theme is the gopis' spirited defence of loving devotion to an embodied, personal God (Krishna) against Uddhav's dry doctrine of the formless Absolute and yogic meditation.

    Read in English

The agony of separation (viraha): the pads vividly portray the gopis' viraha — the inner fire of longing for the absent Krishna, which Uddhav's message only intensifies.

    Read in English

Intensity and purity of selfless love: the gopis' love is utterly egoless and unconditional, contrasted with Uddhav's emotionless detachment, which the poet exposes as a lack rather than a virtue.

    Read in English

The power of witty satire (vyangya): the gopis use sharp irony — apparent praise that is really mockery — as a weapon to defeat the learned Uddhav and assert the emotional truth of bhakti over bookish wisdom.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Read in English

The pads teach that genuine, selfless love and devotion to a personal, loving God is a higher and more fulfilling path than detached, abstract knowledge. A heart that has truly loved cannot be made 'fortunate' by remaining untouched; rather, to remain untouched by love is itself a misfortune. Emotion, surrender and bhakti can outweigh dry intellect, and a true devotee remains faithful even through the deepest pain of separation.

Justification of the Title

Read in English

The title 'पद (सूरदास)' is apt and traditional. A 'pad' is a short lyrical song-form composed for singing, the characteristic unit of Surdas's devotional poetry in 'Sur-sagar'. These selections are pads of the Bhramargeet, each a complete musical lyric ending with the poet's signature (chhap) 'Surdas'. Since the poems are not given an independent topical name but are presented as representative pads of the great bhakti-poet, naming them simply 'पद' by Surdas is both accurate and fitting, directing the reader's attention to the poet and to the song-form itself.

🪄 Literary Devices

Vyangya (Irony / Satire) —

Read in English

Apparent praise that actually conceals biting mockery: calling the loveless Uddhav 'very fortunate' is ironic, since his being untouched by love is presented as his great deficiency.

Upama / Drishtant (Simile & Illustration) —

Read in English

The lotus-leaf in water, the oil-pot in water, and the ant stuck in gur are vivid similes/illustrations that contrast Uddhav's detachment with the gopis' clinging love.

Rupak (Metaphor) —

Read in English

'River of love' (preeti-nadi) and the 'flood/current' of yoga are metaphors; love and viraha are imaged as water and fire that drown and scorch.

Anupras (Alliteration) —

Read in English

Repetition of initial consonant/vowel sounds (अ...अ...आ...आ; ब...ब) creates musical, lyrical flow suited to the gey pad form.

Punarukti-prakash / Vipsa (Emphatic Repetition) —

Read in English

Repetition of 'man' and the doubling 'suni-suni' (hearing again and again) intensify the sense of suppressed, mounting anguish.

Viraha-shringar (Sentiment of Love-in-separation) —

Read in English

The dominant rasa is vipralambha/viraha shringar — the pain of love in separation — heightening the emotional appeal of the second pad.

🎓 Exam Questions & Answers

Short Answer Questions
Q. Who is Uddhav, and why was he sent to the gopis of Braj?

Read in English

Uddhav is the learned friend and messenger of Krishna. After Krishna left Braj for Mathura, he sent Uddhav to console the grieving gopis with a message of nirguna knowledge and yoga, advising them to give up their attachment to the embodied Krishna and meditate on the formless Brahman.

Q. Why do the gopis call Uddhav 'badbhaagi' (very fortunate)? Is the praise genuine?

Read in English

They call him 'fortunate' because he has remained wholly untouched by love. But the praise is ironic (vyangya); the gopis are actually mocking him, for to them being incapable of love is not good fortune but a great loss.

Q. Explain the comparison of Uddhav to a lotus-leaf and an oil-pot in water.

Read in English

Just as a lotus-leaf lives in water yet is never wetted, and an oil-pot stands in water yet not a drop clings to it, so Uddhav has dwelt amid love yet remained completely dry and unaffected by it. The similes stress his total detachment.

Q. How did Uddhav's message of yoga affect the gopis?

Read in English

Instead of consoling them, the message of nirguna yoga deepened their pain. Their only support had been the hope of Krishna's return; hearing the dry yoga-message again and again, the fire of separation (viraha) scorched them even more.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Discuss how, in these pads, Surdas establishes the supremacy of saguna prem-bhakti over nirguna gyan through the gopis' replies to Uddhav.

In the Bhramargeet, Uddhav comes to Braj as the spokesman of nirguna gyan and yoga, urging the gopis to abandon their love for the embodied Krishna and contemplate the formless Brahman. The gopis, however, turn the tables on him. With sharp irony they 'congratulate' him on being 'badbhaagi' (so fortunate) as to remain untouched by love — comparing him to a lotus-leaf and an oil-pot in water that no drop can stain, to one who never dipped a foot in the river of love, nor whose eyes were ever captivated by beauty. By praising his detachment they actually expose it as an emptiness: a life never coloured by love is shown to be barren, not blessed. Against this they set their own love — simple women stuck to Krishna 'like an ant to gur', helplessly and sweetly bound. In the second pad the satire deepens into pathos: their inexpressible inner agony, their shattered hope of Krishna's return, and the realisation that the very source from which they expected rescue has sent a drowning current of dry yoga. Thus Surdas, through the gopis' wit, emotion and unbreakable devotion, demonstrates that living, surrendered love for a personal God is far superior to the cold, lifeless path of abstract knowledge — the central conviction of saguna bhakti.

Q. Describe the emotional condition (viraha) of the gopis as expressed in the second pad '

The second pad is a poignant expression of the gopis' viraha. The longing of their hearts has remained locked within, for it cannot be told to anyone, nor even put into words. So far they had borne all the suffering of body and mind on the single support of hope — the promise that Krishna would return. But Uddhav's repeated messages of nirguna yoga have shattered that hope and only fanned the fire of separation, scorching these love-lorn women more than before. With a striking image they lament that from the very direction from which they cried for rescue, a drowning flood has instead come — the help they expected has become their ruin. Finally they ask how they can now keep their patience, when even Krishna has not honoured the bounds (maryada) of love. The pad moves from suppressed silence to burning anguish to a gentle reproach, making it one of the finest portrayals of vipralambha shringar in Hindi poetry.

Q. Who is the speaker and who is being addressed in these lines?

The speakers are the gopis of Braj, and they are addressing Uddhav, Krishna's messenger who has brought them the message of nirguna yoga.

Q. What two comparisons are used here for Uddhav, and what do they show?

He is compared to a lotus-leaf in water that is never wetted, and to an oil-pot in water on which no drop clings. Both show his complete detachment — he has lived amid love yet remained wholly untouched by it.

Q. Identify the literary device that runs through the word 'badbhaagi' here.

It is irony or satire (vyangya): apparent praise that actually mocks Uddhav, since his loveless detachment is being shown as a defect, not a virtue.

Q. On what single support had the gopis been bearing their suffering?

On the support of hope — the appointed time and the promise that Krishna would return. This hope alone enabled them to endure the agony of body and mind.

Q. What is meant by 'जितहिं तैं चाहति हुतीं गुहारि, उत तैं धार बही'?

It means that from the very direction (Krishna/Mathura) from which the gopis hoped for rescue and relief, has instead come a drowning flood — the dry message of yoga. The source of expected help itself became the cause of their greater distress.

Q. Why do the gopis say they cannot keep their patience any longer?

Because their hope is shattered and the fire of separation has grown unbearable; moreover, they feel Krishna himself has not honoured the maryada (bounds/propriety) of love by sending such a message instead of returning, so patience is no longer possible.
