Overview

About the author: Meerabai (1498–1546) was one of the foremost saint-poets of the Bhakti movement and the most renowned woman poet of the Krishna-devotion (Krishnabhakti) tradition. Born into the royal Rathore family of Merta in Rajasthan and married into the ruling house of Mewar (Chittor), she renounced worldly comforts and courtly conventions to devote herself wholly to her beloved deity, Giridhar Gopal (Krishna), whom she regarded as her husband and lord. Facing fierce opposition and even attempts on her life from her royal in-laws, she remained steadfast in her devotion, wandering as a mendicant, singing the praises of Krishna in the company of saints. Her poetry, composed mainly in Rajasthani mixed with Braj and Gujarati, expresses an intense, personal, almost romantic love (maadhurya bhakti) for Krishna, marked by complete self-surrender, longing (viraha), and emotional directness. Her padas are still sung across India as devotional songs.
📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
Meera offers her humble salutation to Banke Bihari (the playful, beautifully-bent Krishna). On his head shines the peacock-feather crown with a tilak on his forehead, ear-rings glitter, and black curling locks fall about. Holding the flute to his sweet lips he plays it, charming and delighting his beloved Radha. Beholding this enchanting form, Meera is lost in bliss before Mohan, the lifter of the mountain.

Tying ankle-bells to her feet, Meera danced (in devotion). People said Meera had gone mad; her mother-in-law called her a destroyer of the family's honour. The Rana sent a cup of poison, but Meera drank it with a smile. Meera's lord, the clever Giridhar (Krishna), the imperishable one, she attained quite naturally.

Without Hari (Krishna) what refuge have I? You are called my protector and nourisher, and I am your humble maidservant. Your name is my beginning and my end; dwell, I pray, in my heart. Again and again I cry out, O Lord, this is my earnest supplication to you. Like a lotus without water, like a body without life — so is my state. Says Meera, on meeting her lord, the clever Giridhar, she found boundless joy.

📝 Summary
In these three padas Meerabai pours out her single-minded love and complete surrender to Krishna, whom she worships as Giridhar Gopal and accepts as her only lord and husband. The first pad is a song of adoration: she salutes the beautiful Banke Bihari, describing his peacock-feather crown, tilak, ear-rings, dark curls, and the sweet flute on his lips with which he delights Radha; gazing at this enchanting image she is lost in bliss. The second pad is the most famous: tying ankle-bells, Meera dances openly in devotion, indifferent to society's taunts that she has gone mad and to her mother-in-law's accusation that she shames the family. When the Rana sends a cup of poison, she drinks it smilingly, for she fears nothing — and so attains her imperishable, ever-living lord with natural ease. The third pad is a heartfelt prayer of helplessness and longing: without Hari she has no refuge; she calls herself his maidservant, begs him to dwell in her heart, and compares her separation-stricken state to a lotus without water and a body without breath. Finally, meeting Giridhar, she finds limitless joy. Together the padas show Meera's intense maadhurya bhakti, her fearless rejection of worldly bonds, and the supreme bliss of union with the divine.

The title 'Meerabai ke Pad' (The Padas of Meerabai) is apt because the lesson is a selection of 'padas' — short devotional songs — composed by Meerabai herself. A 'pad' is the characteristic verse-form of the Bhakti poets, meant to be sung, and each of these compositions is a self-contained song of love for Krishna bearing Meera's signature (chhap). The title truthfully names both the form (pad) and the poet (Meerabai), and prepares the reader for lyrical, first-person outpourings of devotion rather than a single continuous poem.

Repetition of the same consonant sound at the start of nearby words ('m' in 'mor mukut maathe', 'r' in 'reejh rijhaavai Radha') creates musical, song-like rhythm suited to the pad form.

🎓 Exam Questions & Answers
People call Meera mad because she ties ankle-bells and dances openly in the streets and among saints in her devotion to Krishna, behaviour unthinkable for a royal queen. Her mother-in-law calls her 'kulnaasi' (destroyer of family honour) because, by abandoning courtly decorum and worldly bonds for her spiritual love, Meera is felt to have shamed the dignity of the royal family.

When the Rana sent a cup of poison to kill her, Meera drank it smilingly, without any fear. Her faith in Krishna was so complete that she had no fear of death; she believed her lord would protect her, and indeed the poison did her no harm. This shows her fearless, unshakable devotion.

Meera describes her separation-stricken state with two images: 'jal bin kamal' — a lotus without water, and 'praan bin kaaya' — a body without life. Just as a lotus withers without water and a body is useless without breath, she feels lifeless and helpless without Hari (Krishna). These similes powerfully convey the unbearable pain of viraha.

In the first pad Krishna appears as Banke Bihari, enchantingly beautiful. He wears a peacock-feather crown on his head, a tilak on his forehead, glittering ear-rings, and dark curling locks. Holding the flute to his sweet lips, he plays it to delight his beloved Radha. Meera is so captivated by this lovely image that she is lost in bliss before Mohan, the lifter of the mountain.

The second pad, 'Pag ghunghroo baandh Meera naachi re', is the supreme proof of Meera's fearless devotion. As a royal queen of Mewar she was bound by strict courtly decorum, yet her love for Krishna was so overwhelming that she tied ankle-bells and danced openly, indifferent to convention. Society ridiculed her as 'baavari' (mad) and her own mother-in-law branded her 'kulnaasi', a destroyer of the family's honour, but Meera remained unmoved. The greatest test came when the Rana, enraged at the shame she supposedly brought upon the royal house, sent her a cup of poison to kill her. Meera drank it smilingly ('peevat Meera haansi re'), without a trace of fear, for her trust in Krishna was absolute and she had no attachment to her own life. This calm acceptance of a death threat shows that her devotion had risen above the fear of death itself. The pad ends by declaring that because of such complete, fearless surrender she attained her imperishable lord, Giridhar Nagar, 'sahaj' — quite naturally and effortlessly. Thus the pad teaches that true bhakti conquers social ridicule, family pressure and even the fear of death, and that such single-minded, fearless love alone leads the soul to union with the divine.

Meera's padas are a vivid embodiment of the medieval Bhakti movement, which stressed direct, personal love for a single chosen deity (ishta) over ritual and social hierarchy. Three key features of that movement shine through her verses. First, complete surrender (sharanaagati): Meera calls herself a humble maidservant ('cheri') and Krishna her protector ('pratipaal'), placing herself entirely at his mercy and begging him to dwell in her heart. Second, the rejection of caste, ritual and worldly status: a queen herself, Meera abandons royal dignity to wander and dance among saints, valuing love of God above social honour. Third, and most distinctively, her devotion belongs to the maadhurya-bhava — the 'sweet' mode in which God is loved as a beloved or husband. She worships Krishna as Giridhar Gopal, her lord and bridegroom; she describes his enchanting form with tender delight, longs for him like a lotus for water, and finds boundless joy in union with him. Her emotion is intensely personal and romantic, free of dryness or mere formal worship. The pad form itself — short, musical, meant to be sung — reflects the movement's aim of bringing devotion to the common people in their own language. Thus Meera's padas perfectly mirror Bhakti ideals: loving surrender, equality before God, fearless individual faith, and above all the sweet, personal love (maadhurya bhakti) that makes the divine an intimate beloved.

Meera tied ankle-bells to her feet and danced in deep devotion to Krishna. Overwhelmed by her love for Giridhar, she expressed her bhakti openly through dance, caring nothing for social decorum or her royal status.

Society ridiculed Meera, calling her 'baavari' (mad), while her mother-in-law branded her 'kulnaasi', one who destroys the family's honour. Both the world and her own family opposed and condemned her devotion.

It tells us that because of her complete and fearless surrender, Meera attained her imperishable, eternal lord Krishna quite naturally and effortlessly ('sahaj'). Her pure, single-minded devotion, not any ritual effort, won her union with the eternal divine.
