Overview

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
Here the poet describes the city of Banaras. He says that in this city spring (vasant) arrives suddenly. And when it comes, the poet has himself observed that in this skeleton of bricks and stones — the ancient, stony, crowded city — the mere trembling of a single green leaf is enough to make everything tremble. The whole city stirs to life with the slightest sign of nature's renewal.

Similarly, the poet says, once when the smell of cooked lentils and rice (daal-bhaat) spreads through the whole city, it seems as though the entire city is one very large house in which the whole world is sitting down to eat together. The everyday aroma of simple food dissolves all boundaries and unites the city into a single family, a single home.

The poet now paints the unique character of Banaras. The city is settled on a crescent-shaped (semicircular) ghat along the Ganga. He describes it through a series of beautiful contrasts: the city is half in water and half in chant (mantra); half in flowers and half in corpses (shav); half in sleep and half in the sound of the conch (shankh). In other words, half of Banaras exists in the visible, material world, and the other half exists in the invisible, spiritual world. It lives simultaneously in the realm of life and of death, of the worldly and the divine.

The poet captures the timeless, regenerating spirit of Banaras. When every single leaf falls from its body — that is, even as the city ages, decays and things keep dying — an infinite, eternal tree blossoms within it. The city has a deathless inner vitality. In the roots of that tree dwells water (the Ganga), and within that water dwells a boat — suggesting the continuous flow of life, faith and journey upon the sacred river. Decay outside, but eternal life and movement within.

The poet calls upon the reader to look at the city. Banaras appears like a window (jharokha) opening towards the east. There, with the first ray of the morning sun, an entire civilisation awakens — for Banaras is among the oldest living cities and centres of culture in the world. As the morning light grows and the river flows, the very shape and form of the city seems to float upon the water and rise slowly upwards, as if being born afresh each dawn. The image conveys the ancient, spiritual and ever-renewing nature of Kashi.

Finally the poet shares his personal vision. When he looks at this entire scene early in the morning, it seems to him that the whole city is in a posture of prayer (prarthana ki mudra). With folded hands and bowed reverence, Banaras seems to be slowly moving towards the water — towards the holy Ganga. The closing image fuses devotion, humility and surrender, presenting Banaras not merely as a place but as a living act of worship offered to the sacred river.

This is the second short poem, 'Disha' (Direction). The poet asks a child standing outside a school and flying a kite, 'In which direction is the Himalaya?' The child replies, 'In the direction in which this kite is flying' — and then runs off. The poet says he is still thinking about it, and concludes that the child was right. The child does not give the conventional, geographical answer (north). Instead, with the pure, imaginative logic of childhood, he points in the direction of his soaring kite — the direction of his own joy, freedom and dreams. The poet realises that this innocent, intuitive truth is as valid as the textbook one; there can be many ways of seeing and knowing, and the child's spontaneous vision carries its own profound truth.

📝 Summary
This unit contains two poems by Kedarnath Singh. The first, 'Banaras', is a vivid and loving portrait of the ancient holy city of Kashi (Banaras). The poet shows how spring arrives suddenly, and how the trembling of a single green leaf can stir the whole stony city to life. The aroma of daal-bhaat turns the entire city into one large home where the whole world dines together. Settled on a crescent-shaped ghat by the Ganga, Banaras lives a double existence — half in water, half in chant; half in flowers, half in corpses; half in sleep, half in the conch — half visible and material, half invisible and spiritual, poised between life and death. Even as its leaves (its old structures and lives) fall away, an eternal tree blossoms within it, in whose roots dwells water and in whose water dwells a boat — symbolising deathless, flowing life and faith. At dawn the city looks like a window opening eastward; a whole civilisation awakens with the first ray of the sun, and the city's form seems to float on the water and rise. To the poet, the entire city appears to be in a posture of prayer, slowly moving towards the holy water. The second poem, 'Disha', is a brief, profound piece. The poet asks a kite-flying child in which direction the Himalaya lies. The child points to the direction of his flying kite and runs away. Reflecting on it, the poet concludes the child was right — childhood's imaginative, intuitive truth is as valid as adult, geographical knowledge, and there are many ways of perceiving truth.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of 'Banaras' is to present the ancient city of Kashi as a living, breathing being that embodies the eternal coexistence of life and death, the material and the spiritual, decay and renewal — a city that perpetually moves in prayer towards the sacred Ganga. 'Disha' conveys that truth is not single or fixed; the innocent, imaginative perception of a child can be as true as conventional knowledge, and reality may be approached from many directions.

🧭 Message & Title
The poems teach us to see ordinary places and everyday answers with fresh, sensitive eyes. 'Banaras' urges us to cherish our cultural and spiritual roots and to accept life and death as parts of one continuous, sacred flow. 'Disha' reminds us that knowledge is not only what books and maps tell us; the spontaneous, imaginative truth of a child has its own deep value, and we should remain open to many ways of perceiving reality.

The title 'Banaras' is apt because the entire poem is a single, sustained meditation on this ancient holy city — its ghats, its spring, its aromas, its conches and corpses, its dawn and its prayerful spirit. The city itself is the subject, the body and the soul of the poem, so no other title could capture it. The title 'Disha' (Direction) is equally fitting, for the poem turns on the question of direction: where does the Himalaya lie? The child's unexpected answer transforms a simple geographical 'direction' into a meditation on the many directions of truth and perception, making 'Disha' both the literal and the symbolic heart of the poem.

The city is treated as a living human body — it has a 'badan' (body), it sheds leaves, and it stands in a 'posture of prayer'. Calling the city a 'thatri' (skeleton) of bricks and stones and an eternal tree are striking metaphors that humanise and spiritualise Banaras.

It exists simultaneously in the realms of the worldly and the divine, of life and death.

When the poet asks in which direction the Himalaya lies, the kite-flying child replies, 'In the direction in which this kite is flying,' and runs off. The poet finally agrees because he realises that the child's imaginative, intuitive answer carries its own truth — for a child, direction means the direction of his joy and his soaring kite. The poem suggests that truth is plural and that the innocent vision of childhood is as valid as bookish, geographical knowledge.

Looking at Banaras in the early morning, the poet feels that the entire city stands humbly with bowed reverence, like a devotee with folded hands, slowly moving towards the holy water of the Ganga. This image presents Banaras not merely as a place but as a living act of devotion and surrender to the sacred river, capturing its deeply spiritual character.

In 'Banaras', Kedarnath Singh treats the city not as lifeless stone but as a living, breathing being. He gives it a body ('badan'), from which leaves fall, and shows it standing in a posture of prayer. The poem's central vision is the coexistence of opposites. Banaras is settled on a crescent-shaped ghat and lives 'half in water, half in chant; half in flowers, half in corpses; half in sleep, half in the conch' — that is, half in the visible material world and half in the invisible spiritual one. On its ghats, devotion and death, flowers offered in worship and bodies brought for cremation, exist side by side without contradiction, expressing the Indian spiritual belief that death is not an end but part of an eternal cycle. This duality is deepened by the image of the eternal tree: even as leaves fall from the city's body (as old lives and structures decay), an infinite tree blossoms within it, in whose roots dwells water and in whose water dwells a boat — symbolising deathless, flowing life and faith. At dawn the city looks like a window opening eastward; a whole civilisation reawakens with the first ray of the sun, and the city seems to float on the water and rise, reborn each morning. Finally, the entire city appears to bow in prayer and move slowly towards the sacred Ganga. Through striking metaphors, repetition of 'aadha' (half), paradox and vivid imagery, the poet presents Banaras as an eternal, sacred organism in which life and death, the worldly and the divine, decay and renewal are forever united.

In 'Disha', the poet asks a child standing outside a school and flying a kite, 'In which direction is the Himalaya?' Instead of giving the textbook geographical answer (north), the child replies, 'In the direction in which this kite is flying,' and then runs away. The poet says he is still thinking about it and concludes that the child was right. The deeper meaning is that truth is not single, fixed or merely factual. For the child, 'direction' is not an abstract point on a map but the direction of his joy, his freedom and his soaring kite — he answers from imagination and feeling, not from bookish knowledge. The poet, an adult conditioned to expect one 'correct' answer, is struck by the realisation that the child's spontaneous, intuitive vision carries its own profound validity. The message of the poem is that there are many ways of seeing and knowing the world; the imaginative, innocent perception of childhood deserves respect, and we should not dismiss it in favour of rigid, conventional facts. Reality, the poet suggests, can be approached from many directions, and wisdom lies in remaining open to them.

The city being described is Banaras (Kashi), and the poet is Kedarnath Singh.

It means that one half of Banaras belongs to the visible, material world — its water, flowers and daily life — while the other half belongs to the invisible, spiritual world of mantras, worship and death. Life and death, the worldly and the divine, coexist on its ghats.

The chief devices are repetition (the recurring word 'aadha'), paradox/contrast (flower vs corpse, 'is' vs 'is not'), and symbolism (water, mantra, conch as emblems of the material and spiritual). Together they create rhythm and capture the dual nature of Banaras.
