Overview

About the author: Acharya Hazari Prasad Dwivedi (1907-1979) was one of the most distinguished essayists, critics, novelists and scholars of modern Hindi literature. Born at Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, he received deep training in Sanskrit, Jyotish (astrology) and Indian culture, and later taught at Shantiniketan, where the company of Rabindranath Tagore and Kshitimohan Sen broadened his vision. He served as a professor and head of the Hindi department at Banaras Hindu University and Punjab University. Dwivedi ji blended profound scholarship with a warm, lalit (graceful) essay style. His major works include the novels 'Banabhatta ki Atmakatha', 'Charuchandralekh' and 'Anamdas ka Potha'; critical works like 'Hindi Sahitya ki Bhumika', 'Kabir' and 'Sur Sahitya'; and famous essay collections such as 'Ashok ke Phool', 'Kalpalata', 'Vichar aur Vitark' and 'Kutaj'. His writing is marked by cultural breadth, tolerance, faith in humanity and a rare power to connect tradition with the living present. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan.
📖 Detailed Explanation
The essay opens by drawing attention to its very title, 'Yathasmai Rochate Vishwam' — 'as the universe pleases Him'. This is a famous line from Kalidasa's 'Vikramorvashiyam', in which Brahma, the creator, is said to fashion and refashion the world entirely according to His own pleasure, with absolute creative freedom. Dwivedi ji uses this image of the supremely free creator as the keynote of the whole essay: just as the cosmic creator shapes the universe as he likes, so too the true artist, the genuine creator (srashta), enjoys an unfettered freedom in shaping his creation.

Dwivedi ji argues that creation is not a mechanical act of copying what already exists. The true creator does not merely reflect the outer world like a mirror; he re-creates it from within, infusing it with his own vision, feeling and delight. Just as Brahma is bound by no external model and answers to no one in his act of creation, the artist's authority lies in his inner freedom and his joy (ananda). What the creator makes is pleasing to him first, and out of that personal delight is born a work that can give delight to all.

The essayist makes it clear that this creative freedom is not lawlessness or wilful arbitrariness. The creator's freedom is disciplined by his own inner truth, taste and sense of harmony. Brahma's world, though made 'as it pleases him', is not chaos but a beautifully ordered cosmos. Likewise the artist's liberty is wedded to responsibility: he is free, yet his freedom serves beauty, order and the welfare of all. The essay thus balances the romantic idea of unbound creativity with the classical idea of inner discipline.

Drawing on Indian aesthetic tradition, Dwivedi ji emphasises that the goal of all true creation is ananda — bliss and delight. The creator creates out of an overflow of joy, not out of compulsion. This joy is the link between the cosmic creator and the human artist, and also between the artist and the rasik (the appreciative reader or viewer). A genuine work of art carries within it the creator's delight and transmits that delight to others; in this lies its lasting power and its claim to be called creation in the truest sense.

In its concluding movement, the essay celebrates the dignity and autonomy of the creative spirit. Dwivedi ji upholds the artist's right to imagine and shape the world according to his own inner vision, and reminds us that culture and literature grow only where this freedom is honoured. The piece is therefore both a meditation on the nature of creation and a quiet plea for respecting the independent vision of the true creator — whether that creator be the cosmic Brahma or the human poet who, in his own small way, makes the world afresh 'as it pleases him'.

📝 Summary
In this reflective lalit essay, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi takes as his starting point the famous line of Kalidasa, 'Yathasmai Rochate Vishwam' — Brahma fashions the universe exactly as it pleases Him, in absolute creative freedom. Using this as a symbol, Dwivedi ji explores the nature of true creation. He argues that the genuine creator (srashta) does not merely copy the existing world like a mirror but re-creates it from within, charging it with his own vision, feeling and, above all, delight (ananda). This creative freedom, he insists, is not arbitrary lawlessness; it is disciplined by the artist's inner truth, taste and sense of harmony, just as Brahma's world, though made at His pleasure, is a beautifully ordered cosmos rather than chaos. The joy out of which the creator works becomes the bridge between the cosmic creator, the human artist and the appreciative rasik. A real work of art carries the creator's delight and transmits it to others. The essay thus celebrates the dignity, autonomy and inner discipline of the creative spirit and pleads for honouring the independent vision of the true creator, on whom alone the growth of culture and literature depends.

The title 'Yathasmai Rochate Vishwam' is a quotation from Kalidasa's 'Vikramorvashiyam' meaning 'as the universe pleases Him' — referring to Brahma who fashions the world entirely at his own pleasure. The title is wholly apt because the entire essay revolves around this image of the supremely free creator and applies it to the human artist, whose true creation also springs from his own inner pleasure and vision. The title thus crystallises in a single Sanskrit line the essay's central idea — the joyful, self-pleasing freedom of all genuine creation.

Dwivedi ji builds the entire essay on the famous line of Kalidasa, 'Yathasmai Rochate Vishwam', which describes Brahma fashioning the universe entirely as it pleases Him, in complete creative freedom. He uses this cosmic creator as a symbol of the human artist. Just as Brahma is bound by no external model and answers to no one, the true srashta does not copy reality like a mirror but re-creates it from within, charging it with his own vision, feeling and, above all, delight. Through this recurring analogy the essayist argues that genuine creation is an act of free, joyful re-imagining rather than mechanical imitation. At the same time he is careful to show that this freedom is not arbitrary lawlessness: Brahma's world, though made at His pleasure, is a beautifully ordered cosmos, and likewise the artist's liberty is disciplined by his inner truth, taste and harmony. The joy out of which the creator works becomes the bridge between the cosmic creator, the human artist and the appreciative rasik, so that a real work of art transmits the creator's delight to all. By weaving together this classical allusion, the symbol of Brahma and the analogy of creation, Dwivedi ji celebrates the dignity, autonomy and inner discipline of the creative spirit, and pleads for honouring the independent vision of the true creator on whom the growth of culture and literature depends.

On the surface, the essay seems to celebrate boundless creative liberty — the creator, like Brahma, shapes the world purely as it pleases him. But Dwivedi ji is careful to distinguish this true freedom from mere wilfulness. He points out that Brahma's world, though made 'as it pleases Him', is not chaos but a beautifully ordered and harmonious cosmos. In the same way, the genuine artist's freedom is wedded to responsibility: it is governed by his own inner truth, refined taste and sense of harmony, and it serves beauty, order and the welfare of all. Thus creative freedom and inner discipline are not opposites but complements — the artist is free precisely because he is faithful to his deepest vision and to the demands of beauty. The central message of the essay is that we must honour this independent, inward vision of the true creator, and recognise that real art is born of freedom and joy disciplined by inner truth. Culture and literature, Dwivedi ji reminds us, flourish only where the creative spirit is allowed to remake the world 'as it pleases it' — responsibly, harmoniously and out of delight. The essay therefore both defends the autonomy of the artist and warns against confusing genuine freedom with lawless caprice.
