Out of true love and concern for her honour, the wise samvadiya realises that fleeing would bring her greater dishonour and would not truly end her sorrow. He therefore counsels her to bear her hardship with dignity and patience rather than abandon her home.

The old samvadiya is the soul of Renu's story. Aged and weary, he has nonetheless spent his entire life faithfully carrying others' messages across distant villages, expecting nothing in return. His defining qualities are selfless service, unwavering loyalty and a tender emotional sensitivity. Towards the badi bahuriya he shows a fatherly love, feeling her sorrows as his own and being her only living link to the warmth of her parents' home. Yet he is not merely soft-hearted; he is wise and morally firm. When she begs him to help her flee her unhappy married home, he does not blindly obey. Understanding that escape would only deepen her dishonour in that society, he gently persuades her to endure with dignity instead. In him Renu embodies the values of a whole vanishing rural world: disinterested service, fidelity, and warm human connection. Because the entire story revolves around his role, his emotions and his moral wisdom, he is rightly its heart, and through him the writer mourns the slow disappearance of such rare, large-hearted human beings.
