Her husband's once-prosperous household has fallen on hard times, and she suffers neglect, hardship and constant quarrels there, far from her parental warmth. Worn down by this misery, she longs to escape and return to her own people.

Understanding that escape would only deepen her dishonour in that society, he gently persuades her to endure with dignity instead. In him Renu embodies the values of a whole vanishing rural world: disinterested service, fidelity, and warm human connection. Because the entire story revolves around his role, his emotions and his moral wisdom, he is rightly its heart, and through him the writer mourns the slow disappearance of such rare, large-hearted human beings.
