Overview

About the author: Jayshankar Prasad (1889-1937) was one of the four pillars of the Chhayavad movement in Hindi literature and is regarded as the greatest dramatist of modern Hindi. Born in Varanasi into a wealthy Sungandhi (tobacco-trading) family, he educated himself largely on his own after early family losses, mastering Sanskrit, Hindi, Persian and Urdu. He wrote poetry, plays, novels and short stories. His historical plays — 'Skandagupta', 'Chandragupta', 'Dhruvswamini' and 'Ajatashatru' — combine national pride, philosophical depth and lyrical beauty. His epic poem 'Kamayani' is considered a landmark of Hindi literature. The two songs prescribed here, 'Devsena ka Geet' and 'Cornelia ka Geet', are both drawn from his celebrated play 'Skandagupta'. Prasad's language is rich in Sanskritised vocabulary (tatsam), imagery and emotional intensity.

📝 Summary
These are two lyrical songs by Jayshankar Prasad taken from his historical play 'Skandagupta'. The first, 'Devsena ka Geet', is the lament of the heroine Devsena, who in her old age, betrayed in love by Skandagupta and having renounced the throne and worldly happiness, looks back on her life. She feels that her parting from life has brought her only pain; the love and devotion she gathered through a lifetime were squandered, and whatever was hers returned to her only as tears. Having once climbed high on the strength of anger and resolve, she is now a weary traveller at life's dusk, who takes leave of the world while still singing of its glory — a song of dignified, selfless sacrifice and acceptance. The second, 'Cornelia ka Geet', is sung by Cornelia, a Roman girl who has fallen in love with India. It is a glowing tribute to the beauty of India ('our land'). She describes India as a rosy, honey-sweet country, radiant like the heart of a lotus, where dawn is beloved of sun and moon, the cool Malay breeze blows like a rainbow, the present glides like a swan on a vast ocean, the greenery shines like emerald under a sapphire sky, and dawn (Usha) pours golden light to make the lotus-bud bloom. Together the songs blend personal emotion with patriotic love for the land.

💡 Central Idea
The two songs together express two great human emotions through Prasad's lyrical genius — selfless renunciation and patriotic love. 'Devsena ka Geet' presents the dignity of a woman who, betrayed in love, sacrifices everything yet bears no bitterness and departs singing of the world's glory, teaching that true greatness lies in self-surrender and detachment. 'Cornelia ka Geet' overflows with love and pride for the natural beauty of India, presenting the motherland as a divine, honey-sweet, life-giving paradise.

The titles 'Devsena ka Geet' and 'Cornelia ka Geet' are apt because each is literally a song sung by a character in the play 'Skandagupta'. 'Devsena ka Geet' is the inner voice of the heroine Devsena at the close of her life, expressing her sacrifice and sorrow; 'Cornelia ka Geet' is the song of the Roman maiden Cornelia in praise of India. Naming each song after its singer focuses attention on the emotion and situation of that character, making the titles fully appropriate and meaningful.

Cornelia calls India a rosy, honey-sweet land, beautiful as a casket of emerald and radiant as the heart of a lotus. It suggests that Devsena once rose high in life on the strength of anger, resolve and inner intensity. The metaphor shows she struggled hard and climbed far, but now, weary and disillusioned, she sees that journey ending in life's dusk.

Although both songs are by Prasad and drawn from 'Skandagupta', their moods are strikingly different. 'Devsena ka Geet' is steeped in pathos, renunciation and the quiet melancholy of life's evening. Betrayed in love and having sacrificed throne and happiness, Devsena looks back and feels her life-long devotion was squandered and returned to her only as tears; yet she bears no bitterness and departs singing of the world's glory. Its central idea is selfless sacrifice, detachment and dignified acceptance of sorrow. In contrast, 'Cornelia ka Geet' is bright, joyous and full of love. Sung by a foreign maiden enchanted by India, it is a glowing celebration of the motherland's beauty — its rosy dawns, lotuses, Malay breeze, emerald greenery and golden light. Its central idea is patriotic love and pride in the natural splendour of India. Thus one song is inward, sorrowful and renunciatory, while the other is outward, exuberant and patriotic; together they show the range of Prasad's lyrical art, blending personal emotion with love for the land.

In 'Cornelia ka Geet' Prasad creates a vivid sensory portrait of India through rich imagery and Sanskritised, musical language. Colour imagery dominates: the land is 'aruN' (rosy with dawn), 'madhumay' (honey-sweet), green as 'markat' (emerald), shaded by a 'neelam' (sapphire) sky, and bathed in 'sone ka jal' (golden water of sunlight). He uses simile (upama) abundantly — the present is 'hans-sa' (like a swan) on a vast ocean, the land is beautiful 'as a casket of emerald', and the Malay breeze spreads wings 'like a small rainbow'. Metaphor and personification (manvikaran) bring nature alive: Usha (dawn) becomes a maiden carrying a golden pitcher and pouring golden water, and the delicate lotus-bud is a tender 'baala' (girl). Alliteration (anupras) in lines like 'saral taamaras-garbh vibhaasit' and rich lotus-imagery ('sarsij-nayanonvaala') lend musical sweetness. Through these devices Prasad transforms India into a living, divine paradise, expressing deep love and reverence for the motherland.

Just as a honey-bee gathers nectar drop by drop, Devsena had gathered love, faith and devotion through her whole life as if by begging. 'Madhukariyon ki bheekh lutaai' means she squandered all that precious, hard-gathered love in vain on one who betrayed her.

The dominant emotion is pathos and disillusionment — the pain of selfless love that received only sorrow. Yet it teaches the value of dignified sacrifice and acceptance: Devsena bears her pain without bitterness, showing nobility in suffering.
