Overview

About the author: Malik Muhammad Jayasi (c. 1492–1542 CE) was a celebrated Sufi poet of the Bhakti (Sant) tradition and one of the foremost poets of the 'Premakhyan' (love-narrative) school of early Hindi-Awadhi literature. Born in Jais, in the Rae Bareli district of present-day Uttar Pradesh, he composed in the Awadhi dialect using the Persian masnavi form. His magnum opus, the 'Padmavat' (1540 CE), narrates the love-story of Ratansen and Padmavati and, on a deeper Sufi-allegorical level, depicts the soul's longing for the Divine. Jayasi was a devout, humble man, said to have been physically disfigured (blind in one eye, with a marked face), yet his poetry is luminous with emotional depth, mysticism and a profound understanding of the human heart. The 'Barahmasa' (description of the twelve months) is a famous section of the Padmavat in which Nagmati, the first wife of Ratansen, laments her separation (viraha) from her husband through the changing seasons.

The month of Ashadha (June–July) has come; the sky thunders with dense rain-clouds, and separation has marshalled its army and beats its war-drums. The whole earth has turned dark like the clouds; the rains have begun to pour — and her eyes too begin to weep ceaselessly.

📝 Summary
This 'Barahmasa' is an excerpt from Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic 'Padmavat'. After King Ratansen leaves his first wife Nagmati behind in Chittor and sets out in quest of the beautiful Padmavati of Singhal, Nagmati is left utterly alone, consumed by the pain of separation (viraha). In the Barahmasa convention, the heroine describes her suffering through each of the twelve months and the natural changes that accompany them. In this prescribed portion, set chiefly in the rainy season of Ashadha, Nagmati likens the thundering monsoon clouds to the war-drums of separation. As the sky pours rain, her eyes pour endless tears; the lush green world that delights others only scorches her grieving heart. Her body wastes away — blood drained, flesh melted, bones blackened — and from every pore tears burst like raindrops. In utter despair she begs the bumble-bee and the crow to carry a message to her beloved: tell him that she has burned to death in the fire of separation, and that they themselves are blackened only by the smoke of her burning. The poem is at once a moving picture of a wife's longing and, in the Sufi-allegorical sense, of the soul's anguished yearning for union with God.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the poem is the intense, all-consuming pain of viraha (the suffering of separation in love). Through Nagmati's lament across the rainy season, Jayasi shows how separation from the beloved colours the entire world with grief, wastes the body and soul, and — in its deeper Sufi sense — mirrors the restless longing of the human soul to be united with the Divine.

🎯 Themes
Viraha (Pangs of Separation): The dominant theme is the unbearable suffering of a wife separated from her husband. Nagmati's grief is so deep that it consumes her body and reorders her whole perception of nature.

Nature as a Mirror of Emotion: The monsoon, clouds, wind and greenery are not mere backdrop; they intensify and reflect the heroine's inner sorrow. The rain that gladdens others scorches her, showing how grief transforms the meaning of the natural world.

Sufi Allegory of the Soul's Longing for God: At a mystical level, Nagmati's yearning for Ratansen symbolises the human soul (atma) longing to unite with the Supreme Beloved (Parmatma). The fire of separation is the spiritual restlessness of the devotee.

Pativrata Dharma and a Wife's Devotion: Nagmati embodies the ideal of the faithful, devoted wife (pativrata) whose entire existence is centred on her husband, even willing to die in his absence.

🧭 Message & Title
The poem conveys the profound truth that true love is measured by the depth of longing endured in separation. It teaches that genuine love and devotion can be so intense that they consume the self entirely; and at a spiritual level, that the soul's restless yearning is the very path toward union with the Divine. It also evokes deep compassion for the suffering of those parted from their loved ones.

The title 'Barahmasa' literally means 'of the twelve months' and refers to a well-established convention in Indian folk and classical poetry in which a separated heroine describes her viraha through the changing seasons of all twelve months. The title is wholly apt because the poem unfolds Nagmati's grief by tying it to the natural cycle — here especially the rains of Ashadha — month by month. Thus the title perfectly announces both the form and the emotional content of the piece: a season-by-season chronicle of a longing heart.

In the Barahmasa, Jayasi achieves a masterful fusion of nature and emotion (here in its 'uddipan' or stimulant aspect). The external scenery of the rainy season is never merely descriptive; it is charged with Nagmati's grief and constantly intensifies it. The thundering clouds of Ashadha become the war-drums of separation marshalling an army against her; the rain that pours from the sky is mirrored by the endless tears pouring from her eyes. The lush greenery that fills the world with delight scorches her lonely heart, and the gusting wind cruelly torments her wasted body. Thus the same natural beauty that brings others joy becomes, for the viraha-stricken Nagmati, an instrument of torture. Jayasi also uses nature for vivid comparison — tears bursting from every pore are likened to raindrops scattering from clouds. Through personification, allegory and simile, the poet makes nature an active participant in her sorrow rather than a passive background. This perfect harmony (samanjasya) between the outer world and the inner heart is the hallmark of Jayasi's art and is what gives the Barahmasa its deep emotional and lyrical power.

Jayasi belonged to the Sufi 'premakhyan' tradition, in which an earthly love-story is constructed as an allegory of the soul's love for God. On the surface, the Barahmasa is the heart-rending lament of Nagmati, a faithful wife separated from her husband Ratansen. But at a deeper, mystical level Nagmati represents the human soul (atma/jivatma) and Ratansen represents the Supreme Beloved (Parmatma/God). Nagmati's unbearable viraha then becomes the restless spiritual longing of the soul that has been separated from the Divine and yearns desperately for reunion. The 'fire of separation' (birha-agni) in which she burns is the purifying spiritual anguish of the devotee; the wasting of her body symbolises the dissolution of the ego and worldly attachment on the path of love. Her plea to the messengers (bee and crow) reflects the soul's cry to be remembered by the Beloved. Thus what reads as a tender domestic lament is simultaneously a profound statement of Sufi mysticism: that true union with God is attained only through the consuming pain of longing, and that this longing itself sanctifies and transforms the seeker. This dual layer — the human and the divine — is exactly what gives Jayasi's poetry its lasting depth.
