A science degree for PCB students built around living systems: cells, genes, microbes, plants, animals and the chemistry of life. It is the route into biology research, biotech and pharma labs, clinical research, forensic science, environmental work and teaching. It suits students who genuinely enjoy biology beyond memorising for NEET, and who are prepared to add a master's or specific skills to get good jobs.
Know this. A B.Sc in a life science is usually the first half of a career, not all of it. Most good jobs in biotech, pharma R&D, clinical research and forensics ask for an M.Sc, and research needs a PhD. Plan the next step early: IIT JAM or CUET-PG for a strong M.Sc, or a focused skill like bioinformatics, clinical research or data analysis. Families who expect a B.Sc Biotechnology alone to lead to a biotech job are often disappointed.
Getting in
Bachelor of Science in Biology-based subjects: Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Life Sciences, Forensic Science and related fields
Who can apply
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (some universities accept Biotechnology in place of Biology; some programmes, such as biochemistry at certain universities, prefer Mathematics too). Minimum marks are set by each university, usually around 50–60% for general category. For central universities you must take the CUET-UG subjects they specify, usually Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
How admission works
Central universities (Delhi University, BHU, Hyderabad, Pondicherry and others) and many state and private universities admit through CUET-UG, run by NTA in May–June; you choose up to five subjects and each university sets which ones count and runs its own counselling and merit lists. Many state universities and colleges still admit on Class 12 marks. Private universities often run their own tests or admit directly. If you want research-focused science, also sit the IISER Aptitude Test and NEST (for five-year BS-MS or integrated M.Sc programmes, which are separate courses). Most PCB students apply for B.Sc seats alongside NEET, so that a good science seat is ready if NEET does not work out.
What you study
- Year 1: cell biology, biomolecules, diversity of plants and animals or microbes, basic chemistry, and a skill or language course
- Year 2: genetics, molecular biology, physiology, ecology, microbiology or biochemistry depending on your major
- Year 3: immunology, biotechnology techniques, developmental biology, bioinformatics, electives, and lab projects; exit here with a 3-year degree
- Year 4 (Honours): advanced electives; students with 75% or more in the first six semesters can choose Honours with Research and do a dissertation
- Throughout: extensive laboratory work, field work (for botany, zoology, ecology), and data analysis
Specialisations: Zoology · Botany · Biotechnology · Microbiology · Biochemistry · Genetics · Life Sciences (multi-subject) · Forensic Science · Environmental Science · Food Technology / Home Science (related, at some universities)
Is it you?
A good fit if
- You enjoy biology for its own sake, not only as a NEET subject
- You are curious about research, labs, genetics or microbes
- You are ready to do a master's (M.Sc) and possibly a PhD
- You want a lower-cost path while keeping a second NEET attempt possible
Think twice if
- You want a clinical, patient-facing career; consider nursing, allied health or AYUSH instead
- You need a well-paid job straight after three years
- You dislike lab work, long experiments and careful record-keeping
- You are joining only while waiting for NEET, with no interest in the subject (it becomes hard to catch up)
The honest part
- Many B.Sc life-science graduates end up in low-paid or unrelated jobs without further study
- Biotech 'job guarantee' claims by private colleges are usually not backed by data
- Good M.Sc seats (IITs, central universities, top institutes) are competitive
- Research careers are long and fellowship-funded; stable positions come late
- Skills in statistics and programming add a great deal of value in modern biology
What it costs
- Government
- Roughly ₹5,000–60,000 a year at government colleges and central universities
- Private
- Roughly ₹60,000–2.5 lakh a year at private universities; biotechnology and forensic programmes cost more
- Help
- The DST INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) supports top-performing Class 12 students who study natural or basic sciences; check current criteria. Central Sector and state post-matric scholarships also apply.
Rough 2026 ranges to compare routes. Fees differ by college and state and change every year.

Or start work as
- Lab technician or research assistant at research institutes and diagnostic labs
- Quality control or production executive at pharma, biotech and food companies
- Clinical research associate or data coordinator at contract research organisations (usually after a short course or M.Sc)
- Medical coder or pharmacovigilance associate at healthcare outsourcing firms

Starting pay
With only a B.Sc, first jobs typically pay roughly ₹1.8–3.5 lakh a year (lab, QC, medical coding, pharmacovigilance). After an M.Sc from a good institute or a specialised skill (bioinformatics, clinical research, data analysis), roughly ₹3.5–7 lakh is common. Questions families ask
Is B.Sc a good backup if I do not clear NEET?
Yes, if you like biology. A B.Sc at a good college keeps research, pharma, public health and even a later medical attempt open. Choose a college with good labs and faculty rather than the nearest option.
B.Sc Biotechnology or B.Sc Microbiology, which is better?
Neither is better in general. Microbiology has steady demand in diagnostics, pharma QC and food. Biotechnology is broader but its job market is smaller at B.Sc level. Both usually need an M.Sc for good roles.
Can I prepare for NEET again while doing B.Sc?
Many students do. It is hard to do both well, so decide honestly which one is the priority for that year, and check your university's attendance rules.
Should I take the 4-year Honours with Research?
If you plan research or a PhD, especially abroad, yes. The UGC framework allows students with 75% or more in the first six semesters to do a research year with a dissertation.
Can a B.Sc biology student sit for UPSC or bank exams?
Yes. Any graduate can apply for UPSC Civil Services, SSC CGL, bank PO and state PSC exams.
