About the author: Goswami Tulsidas (1532-1623) was one of the greatest poets of the Bhakti period and a supreme devotee of Lord Rama. He was born in Rajapur (Banda district, Uttar Pradesh). His most famous work is the 'Ramcharitmanas', written in the Awadhi language, in which he narrated the entire life of Lord Rama. He also composed 'Vinay Patrika', 'Kavitavali', 'Geetavali', 'Dohavali' and 'Hanuman Chalisa'. His poetry is filled with devotion, simplicity, sweetness and the human values of love and self-sacrifice. The given verses are doha-chaupais taken from his work 'Kavitavali', describing a tender moment from Rama's exile in the forest.

झलकीं भरि भाल कनी जल की, पुट सूख गए मधुराधर वै॥
Sita, the wife of Rama (Raghubir), came out of the village. Gathering courage, she took two steps on the path. Drops of sweat glistened on her forehead and her sweet lips dried up (with weariness and the unaccustomed strain of the journey).
