📖 Detailed Explanation
This essay is a piece of reportage written in the style of a newspaper account, based on the events of the First War of Indian Independence of 1857. The writer begins by pointing out that the British historians have written only one-sided accounts of 1857, painting the Indian revolutionaries as cruel rebels while hiding the far greater cruelty committed by the English themselves. The writer says that the true and heart-rending stories of Indian heroes and heroines have remained buried, and she wishes to bring one such forgotten incident before the readers — the tragic story of Maina, the daughter of Nana Sahab of Bithoor.

The narration moves to the events at Bithoor, the residence of Nana Sahab near Kanpur. After the failure of the revolt, Nana Sahab had to flee, and the British forces, under General Outram (referred to in the lesson as the cruel English officers and especially Hewitt/the General), reached Bithoor to capture or destroy his palace. The grand palace of Nana Sahab, which was a symbol of his glory, was reduced to ruins. Among the ruins, a soldier named Todd discovered a frightened young girl hiding — she was Maina, the beloved daughter of Nana Sahab, who had been left behind. Todd had earlier been a friend of Nana Sahab's family and knew Maina from her childhood; he was moved with pity and affection on seeing her.

Todd tried his utmost to save Maina. He hid her and pleaded with the higher officers, but the cruel General (Hewitt) was bent upon revenge against Nana Sahab. The English were furious that they could not capture Nana Sahab himself, so they wanted to vent their anger on his daughter. Maina was a tender, intelligent and brave girl of about thirteen or fourteen. When brought before the General, she spoke fearlessly and with dignity. She appealed to the General's sense of justice and humanity, asking why she should be punished for being the daughter of a man who had only fought for his own country and rights. Her words were so moving that even some of the English present were touched, but the hard-hearted General remained unmoved.

Despite Maina's innocent and powerful pleading, and despite Todd's repeated efforts, the merciless General ordered that the girl be burnt alive. The faithful Todd, unable to bear the injustice, tried again and again to protect her but failed. Maina was tied and, by the order of the British officer, she was burnt to ashes in the very ruins of her father's palace. The essay ends on this deeply tragic note, exposing the savage cruelty of the British rulers, who could murder an innocent child merely out of vengeance, and pays homage to the courage of little Maina, a forgotten martyr of 1857.

The title 'Nana Sahab Ki Putri Devi Maina Ko Bhasm Kar Diya Gaya' (Nana Sahab's Daughter Devi Maina Was Burnt to Ashes) is perfectly apt, for it directly names the central figure and the tragic climax of the essay. The blunt, factual tone of the title — like a news headline — suits the reportage style and immediately conveys the horror of an innocent girl being burnt alive. It draws attention to Maina, the forgotten heroine the writer wishes to honour, and underlines both the cruelty of the British and the sacrifice of Maina, thus capturing the very heart of the lesson.

The essay strongly exposes both the cruelty of the British rulers and the bias of the history they wrote. At the very beginning, the writer points out that British historians presented only a one-sided account of 1857, painting the Indian revolutionaries as cruel rebels while concealing the far greater savagery of the English. The story of Maina proves this point. Unable to capture Nana Sahab, the British vent their fury on his innocent young daughter. They destroy his magnificent palace and reduce it to ruins. When Maina is found, the merciless General, blinded by revenge, refuses to listen to her brave and reasonable pleas or to the appeals of the compassionate soldier Todd, and orders that the child be burnt alive. Burning an innocent girl to ashes merely out of vengeance reveals the inhuman face of British rule, which hid behind a mask of civilisation. At the same time, by recovering this forgotten incident, the writer reminds us that history is usually written by the victors, who suppress their own crimes and the sacrifices of the defeated. The essay thus urges readers to question one-sided history and to remember the true heroes and heroines, like Maina, whom such history conveniently forgot.
