Overview

📝 Summary
In this poem, a child innocently asks his mother in which direction Yamraj, the god of death, lives. The mother, searching her memory of history and geography, points towards the south — the traditional direction of death in Indian belief — and softens the answer by telling him a story in which Yamraj was once punished for taking away a son's life. The boy believes her and grows up. But when he becomes an adult and comes to understand the real suffering of the world, he discovers that death does not lie in a single direction. He sees Yamraj everywhere: in the police batons, jails, gallows and gunpowder of the powerful state, and in the cruelty of the master, the moneylender and the landlord who exploit the poor. Death and oppression have spread in every direction. The poet's bitter realisation is that he can no longer tell his old mother the simple childhood answer, because Yamraj has himself become every direction. The poem is a powerful protest against social injustice, exploitation and the many forces that crush the common, helpless human being.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the poem is that death — in the form of injustice, oppression and exploitation — is no longer confined to one mythical direction but has spread into every corner of human society. The forces of state power and economic exploitation have become the real 'Yamraj' that constantly threaten the life and dignity of the poor and the powerless.

🎯 Themes
Social injustice and exploitation: The poem exposes how the poor and weak are oppressed on every side — by the police, the courts, the master, the moneylender and the landlord — making death (Yamraj) an ever-present force in their lives.

Loss of childhood innocence: The contrast between the child's innocent question and the adult's bitter awareness shows how the harsh truths of the world shatter childhood faith and simplicity.

Bond between mother and child: The tender relationship between mother and son frames the whole poem — the mother shields the child with a comforting story, and the grown son in turn wishes to protect his aged mother from a painful truth.

Protest against oppressive power: The poem is a strong voice of dissent against the structures of power — the state, capital and feudal authority — that destroy ordinary human life.

🧭 Message & Title
The poem gives a powerful message that we must recognise the real face of death in our society — it is not a distant myth but the everyday injustice, cruelty and exploitation suffered by the poor. We should be sensitive to this suffering and raise our voice against the forces of oppression instead of accepting them silently.

The title 'Yamraj ki Disha' (The Direction of Yamraj) is highly appropriate and ironic. The poem begins with a child's literal question about the geographical direction of the god of death, to which the mother answers 'the south'. But as the poem unfolds, the title takes on a deeper meaning: Yamraj is no longer in any single direction. Through the grown man's experience of the world, the poet shows that death — in the form of social oppression — has spread into every direction, until Yamraj himself becomes the direction. The title thus journeys from an innocent childhood query to a profound social truth, making it the very heart of the poem's meaning.

The poem opens on a tender, innocent note: a child asks his mother where Yamraj lives. The mother, drawing on tradition, points to the south and softens the idea of death with a story in which Yamraj was punished for taking a son's life. This is the protected world of childhood, where the mother shields her child and death seems distant and conquerable. As the boy grows and experiences the real world, however, the poem turns sharply. He discovers that death does not sit in one mythical direction but lives in the police batons, jails, gallows and gunpowder of the state, and in the master's claws, the moneylender's cheating scales and the landlord's sword. These concrete images expose the everyday violence and exploitation faced by the poor. Yamraj has spread into every direction — indeed, he has himself become the direction. Thus the poet transforms a personal, domestic moment into a powerful indictment of social injustice. The final irony — that the grown son cannot tell his aged mother this bitter truth — unites the tenderness of the opening with the protest of the close, making the poem both deeply human and sharply political.

The social message of the poem is that death in our society no longer means a distant mythical god, but the constant injustice, cruelty and exploitation that crush ordinary, helpless human beings. The poet conveys this through two clusters of powerful images. The first — police batons, jails, hangman's nooses and heaps of gunpowder — represents the oppressive power of the state, which uses force and fear against the common people. The second — the master's claws, the moneylender's scales and the landlord's sword — represents economic and feudal exploitation, where the powerful cheat, enslave and dominate the poor. Together these images show that wherever the weak turn, they meet some form of Yamraj. The poet's message is one of awakening: we must recognise these real faces of death, feel for those who suffer, and refuse to accept oppression silently. The poem is thus a humane and courageous call to fight against the structures of injustice in society.
