Cover Poster

About the author: Kabir is regarded as one of the greatest saint-poets of the Nirgun bhakti (devotion to the formless God) tradition. He is believed to have been born around 1398 in Kashi (Varanasi) and to have lived for about 120 years. According to popular legend he was found as an infant by a Muslim weaver couple, Neeru and Neema, and was brought up in a weaver's household, taking up weaving as his livelihood. He is said to have been the disciple of the famous saint Ramanand. Kabir was unlettered and never wrote anything with his own hand; his utterances were collected by his followers in the 'Beejak', which has three parts — Sakhi, Sabad and Ramaini. His language, a mix of many dialects, is called 'Sadhukkari' or 'Pancmel khichdi'. Kabir fearlessly attacked outward rituals, idol-worship, the caste system, religious hypocrisy and bigotry in both Hindus and Muslims, and stressed inner purity, love and self-knowledge. He died, by tradition, at Maghar.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

One should speak such words after shedding the ego of the mind, so that one's own body (heart) becomes cool and calm, and others too feel happiness.

The musk lies in the deer's own navel, yet the deer searches for its fragrance all over the forest. In the same way God dwells in every heart, but the world does not see Him within.

When 'I' (ego) was present, God was not; now that God is present, the 'I' has vanished. All the darkness has disappeared, for I have seen the lamp (of knowledge) within.

The Hindu dies calling on Ram, the Muslim on Khuda. Kabir says that the one who goes near neither of these two (sects and their quarrels) truly remains alive. — In the Sabad, God speaks: O man, where do you search for me? I am right beside you. I am neither in the temple nor in the mosque, neither in the Kaaba nor on Mount Kailash. I am not in mere rituals, nor in yoga and renunciation. If you become a true seeker, you will find me at once, in a single moment's search. Kabir says, listen O good saints, I dwell in the breath of every breath (in the very life of all).

📝 Summary

In these Sakhis and Sabad, Kabir gives the essence of true devotion and right living. He teaches us to speak sweet, ego-free words that bring peace to oneself and joy to others. Through the example of the musk-deer searching the forest for the fragrance carried in its own navel, he shows that God lives within every heart, yet people seek Him outside. The lamp of self-knowledge dawns only when the ego dissolves. Instead of finding fault with others, one should examine one's own heart, for there the real flaws lie. Kabir boldly rejects idol-worship and outward rituals — a grinding-stone that feeds the world is more useful than a worshipped stone. He attacks the narrow communalism of both Hindus and Muslims and declares that the truly alive person rises above sectarian quarrels. In the Sabad, the formless God Himself declares that He is not in temple, mosque, Kaaba, Kailash, rituals or renunciation, but lives close to us, in the breath of every living being, and is found in a moment by a sincere seeker.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea is that God is formless and dwells within every heart and in the breath of all living beings, not in idols, temples, mosques or outward rituals. True devotion lies in egoless speech, self-examination, inner purity and love, rising above religious hypocrisy and communal divisions.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poem teaches us to speak gently and humbly, to give up ego and pride, to look honestly at our own faults instead of criticising others, and to seek God not in stone images or rituals but within our own hearts. It urges us to rise above religious bigotry and to recognise the one divine presence in all living beings.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Sakhiyan evam Sabad' (Sakhis and Sabad) is apt because the lesson is drawn from two of the three sections of Kabir's compositions. The 'Sakhi' (from the Sanskrit 'sakshi', meaning witness) are doha-like couplets that bear witness to spiritual truth and convey teaching in compressed form, while the 'Sabad' (word) are song-like compositions meant to be sung, expressing the same truths in a lyrical, musical manner. Since the chapter presents both these forms of Kabir's poetry, the title truthfully names its very content and structure.

Short Answer Questions
Q. What kind of speech does Kabir advise us to use, and why?

Kabir advises us to speak sweet, humble and ego-free words. Such speech keeps one's own heart cool and peaceful and at the same time gives happiness to others who hear it.

Q. Explain the example of the musk-deer used by Kabir.

The musk lies in the deer's own navel, yet the deer runs about the forest searching for that fragrance. Likewise, God dwells in every person's heart, but people foolishly look for Him outside in temples and rituals instead of within themselves.

Q. Why does Kabir consider the grinding-stone better than the worshipped stone idol?

Kabir says that if God could be obtained by worshipping a stone he would worship a whole mountain. Since that is meaningless, the grinding-stone is better, for at least it grinds grain and feeds the whole world, whereas the idol gives nothing.

Q. According to Kabir, who is truly 'alive'?

Kabir says the Hindu dies clinging to 'Ram' and the Muslim to 'Khuda'. Truly alive is the one who does not go near either narrow sect, that is, the one who rises above communal quarrels and recognises the one God in all.

Long Answer Questions
Q. How does Kabir, in these Sakhis and Sabad, attack outward rituals and religious hypocrisy while pointing to the true path of devotion?

Kabir was a fearless social and religious reformer, and these verses are a strong attack on hollow outward forms of religion. He ridicules idol-worship by saying that if a stone idol could give God, he would worship a whole mountain; a grinding-stone that feeds the world is far more useful. He rejects the idea that God lives in temples, mosques, the Kaaba or Kailash, or that He can be reached through rituals, yoga or renunciation. He exposes the bigotry of both Hindus and Muslims who die quarrelling over names like 'Ram' and 'Khuda', and declares that the truly alive person rises above such narrowness. Against all this empty show, Kabir points to the true path: speak sweet, ego-free words; give up the 'I' so that the lamp of inner knowledge can dispel the darkness of ignorance; search one's own heart for faults instead of blaming others; and realise that the formless God dwells within every heart, in the breath of every living being, and is found in a moment by a sincere seeker. Thus inner purity, love, humility and self-knowledge — not outward ritual — form the heart of true devotion.

Q. 'The conquest of ego is the key to realising God.' Discuss this idea with reference to Kabir's Sakhis.

For Kabir, ego ('aapa', 'main') is the greatest barrier between the soul and God. This thought runs through several Sakhis. He begins by asking us to speak after 'losing the ego of the mind', for only egoless speech brings peace to oneself and joy to others. Most powerfully, he says, 'When I was, God was not; now God is, and I am not' — meaning that so long as the pride of self filled him, he could not perceive God, but the moment the ego dissolved, the lamp of knowledge lit up within and all the darkness of ignorance vanished. Closely linked is the Sakhi in which Kabir sets out to find a wicked person but, on searching his own heart, finds none worse than himself; this humility, the opposite of ego, is itself a step towards God. Together these verses teach that pride and the illusion of 'I' keep man wandering outside, like the musk-deer; only when ego is conquered does the seeker see that the formless God has been within all along. Hence the conquest of ego is indeed the key to realising God.
