Overview

About the author: Raskhan (Sayyid Ibrahim Khan) was a remarkable Krishna-devotee poet of the Bhakti era, born around 1548 CE near Delhi (some hold Pihani in Hardoi district). Though born a Muslim Pathan in a Sufi family, he became so deeply absorbed in the love of Lord Krishna that he is counted among the foremost devotee-poets of the Krishna-bhakti (Vallabh) tradition. It is said that on reading the Bhagavata he renounced everything and settled in Brindavan, where he spent his life singing the praises of Krishna. His poetry, composed mainly in the sweet Brajbhasha, overflows with pure devotion, natural simplicity and intense emotion. His chief works are 'Prem Vatika' and 'Sujan Raskhan'. Because of his deep, selfless love for Krishna it is famously said that 'Raskhan were jewels (ratan) scattered by Krishna on the path of devotion.' He passed away around 1628 CE.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

Raskhan says: if I am to be born a human, then let me live only among the cowherds of Gokul village in Braj. If I am made an animal, then I would have no other wish than to graze for ever amid the cows of Nanda. If I am made a stone, then let me be a part of that very mountain (Govardhan) which Krishna lifted on his hand as an umbrella to shelter Braj from Indra (Purandar). And if I am made a bird, then let my dwelling be among the branches of the kadamba trees that grow on the bank of the Yamuna (Kalindi).

For this small stick (lakuti) and the blanket (kamariya) of Krishna the cowherd, I am ready to give up the sovereignty of all the three worlds. The happiness of grazing Nanda's cows is so great that I would gladly forget even the eight siddhis and the nine nidhis (all supernatural powers and treasures). O Raskhan! May I, even for once, behold with these eyes the forests, gardens and ponds of Braj. Over a single bower of karil bushes of Braj I am ready to sacrifice millions of palaces of gold.

📝 Summary

These two savaiyas express the poet Raskhan's boundless and selfless love for Lord Krishna and the land of Braj. In the first savaiya, the poet wishes that in whatever form God grants him birth, that birth should be connected with Braj and Krishna. If he is born a human, let it be among the cowherds of Gokul; if an animal, let him graze among Nanda's cows; if a stone, let him be part of the Govardhan mountain that Krishna lifted; if a bird, let him nest in the kadamba trees by the Yamuna. In the second savaiya, the poet declares that he would sacrifice the kingdom of all three worlds for Krishna's humble stick and blanket, and would forget even the eight siddhis and nine nidhis for the joy of grazing cows. He longs to see, even once, the forests, gardens and ponds of Braj, and is ready to give up millions of golden palaces for a single bower of karil bushes in Braj. Thus the poet shows that true devotion values the humble things linked with Krishna far above all worldly wealth and power.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of these savaiyas is the poet's intense, selfless devotion to Lord Krishna and his deep love for Braj. Raskhan considers even the humblest objects and creatures associated with Krishna — a stick, a blanket, the cows, the trees, the bushes of Braj — to be more precious than all the wealth, power and supernatural attainments of the three worlds. True love and devotion lie not in grandeur but in closeness to the beloved Lord.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poem conveys that true happiness and fulfilment lie not in worldly riches or power but in selfless love and devotion to God. One who truly loves the Lord finds even the simplest things connected with Him more precious than all the treasures of the world. It also teaches that genuine devotion transcends barriers of caste, creed and religion.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Savaiye' refers to the metre (chhand) in which these verses are composed. A savaiya is a popular metre of Brajbhasha poetry, each line containing a fixed number of syllabic instants, giving a flowing, melodious rhythm. Since Raskhan has written these devotional verses in the savaiya metre, the title is apt and accurately names the poetic form. The content — overflowing love for Krishna and Braj — is perfectly carried by the sweet, song-like flow of the savaiya, making the title both technically correct and aesthetically fitting.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Raskhan, though born a Muslim, became a great devotee of Krishna. On the basis of these savaiyas, describe the nature of his devotion and his love for Braj.

Raskhan's devotion to Krishna is pure, selfless and all-consuming. In these savaiyas he does not ask God for liberation, wealth or power; instead he longs only for an eternal bond with Krishna and his land, Braj. He says that in whatever form he is born — human, animal, stone or bird — that birth must be connected with Braj: he would be a cowherd of Gokul, a cow grazing in Nanda's herd, a stone of the Govardhan mountain that Krishna lifted, or a bird nesting in the kadamba trees by the Yamuna. His love for Braj is so deep that he would sacrifice the kingdom of three worlds for Krishna's humble stick and blanket, forget the eight siddhis and nine nidhis for the joy of grazing cows, and give up millions of golden palaces for a single bower of karil bushes. This shows that for him the simplest objects linked with Krishna are more precious than all worldly riches and powers. His example also proves that true devotion rises above the barriers of caste, creed and religion — the heart's love for God knows no such boundaries.

Q. In these savaiyas the poet contrasts worldly wealth and power with simple things connected to Krishna. Explain this contrast and the message it conveys.

Throughout these savaiyas the poet sets the greatest worldly attainments against the humblest things of Braj, and in every case the humble things win. He places the 'kingdom of three worlds' against Krishna's plain stick and blanket; the 'eight siddhis and nine nidhis' against the simple joy of grazing Nanda's cows; and 'millions of golden palaces' against a single bower of thorny karil bushes. Each time, the poet chooses Krishna's world over wealth and power. This deliberate contrast highlights that material riches, status and even supernatural powers are worthless to a true devotee; what matters is closeness to the beloved Lord. The message is profound: real happiness and fulfilment do not come from outward grandeur but from selfless love and devotion. When the heart is filled with love for God, the simplest things associated with Him become priceless treasures, and all worldly splendour appears insignificant in comparison.

The 'giri' (mountain) refers to the Govardhan mountain which Krishna lifted on his finger like an umbrella to protect the people of Braj from the heavy rains sent by 'Purandar', that is Indra, the king of gods. If born a stone, the poet wishes to be part of this sacred mountain.

Q. What does the poet mean by 'लकुटी अरु कामरिया' and why are they so precious to him?

By 'lakuti' the poet means the small stick or staff of Krishna and by 'kamariya' his coarse blanket. These are the simple belongings of Krishna the cowherd. They are so precious to the poet because they are linked with his beloved Lord; for them he would gladly give up the kingdom of all three worlds.

Q. What is the poet ready to sacrifice for a bower of karil bushes, and what does this show?

The poet is ready to sacrifice millions of golden palaces ('kotik kaldhaut ke dhaam') over a single bower of thorny karil bushes of Braj. This shows the depth of his love for Braj — even its humblest, thorniest spot is dearer to him than countless palaces of gold, because it is the land of Krishna.
