Aroh Poem

Overview

✍️ About the Author / Poet

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

On the ocean of the breeze floats the shadow of sorrow over fleeting happiness; over the burnt heart of the world spreads the flooding illusion of a merciless revolution. O cloud, this war-boat of yours, laden with aspirations, is the cloud of revolution! Hearing the trumpet-like thunder of the cloud, the sleeping seeds buried in the heart of the earth awaken, alert with hopes of new life, and look up with raised heads at the cloud of revolution. Again and again it thunders, the downpour falls in torrents, and the whole world holds its heart in fear, listening to the fierce roar of the thunderbolt.

Struck by the lightning-bolt, hundreds of brave warriors lie fallen — their motionless bodies wounded and shattered. These are the high mountains, sky-touching and proud, steadfast in their rivalry, which have been laid low by the storm of revolution.

The winds of all directions tremble, the ocean rises in waves again and again, shaken and trembling by the fierce wind. The sal trees, terrified, have sunk into the earth; smoke rises and the pond has dried up. Thus, riding the cloud-vehicle, O hero of revolution, amidst today's terrible weeping and uproar, your deep, thunderous laughter rings out!

'Baadal Raag' is a revolutionary poem in which Nirala uses the cloud as a symbol of revolution (vidroh/kranti). The cloud's thunder and torrential rain represent the upheaval that destroys the wealthy and powerful (symbolised by proud sky-touching mountains and tall sal trees) while bringing hope and new life to the oppressed and exploited (symbolised by sleeping seeds in the earth). The fleeting happiness of the rich is overshadowed by the sorrow that revolution brings to them, while the poor look up with raised heads, full of hope. Lightning strikes down hundreds of 'warriors', the seas tremble and trees sink in fear, yet amid this terror the revolutionary's deep thunderous laughter rings out triumphantly. In the final stanza the weak, emaciated farmer — whose strength has been sucked dry by exploiters until only bones remain — calls out impatiently to the cloud, the 'hero of revolution' and the very ocean of life, to come and end his suffering. Thus the poem voices Nirala's sympathy for the downtrodden and his faith that revolution will overturn an unjust social order.

💡 Central Idea

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Read in English

The poem conveys that an unjust social order built on the exploitation of the poor cannot last forever; the storm of revolution will inevitably arrive to shatter the proud and powerful and to restore dignity, hope and life to the oppressed. It urges sympathy for the suffering masses and faith in the transforming power of change.

Justification of the Title

Read in English

The title 'Baadal Raag' (The Song of the Cloud) is highly appropriate, for the entire poem is addressed to the cloud and sings of its mighty deeds. The 'raag' (melody/song) here is the thunderous music of revolution that the cloud plays — its trumpet-like roar awakens hope in the oppressed and strikes terror in the exploiters. Since the cloud, as the symbol of revolution, is the central figure and its 'song' shapes the mood of destruction and renewal throughout, the title perfectly captures the spirit and subject of the poem.

Repeated words intensify the relentless, recurring force of the revolution and add rhythm to the verse.

Mukt Chhand (मुक्त छंद) — “पूरी कविता की अनियमित पंक्ति-लंबाई”

Long Answer Questions
Q. Discuss how Nirala presents the cloud as a symbol of revolution in 'Baadal Raag'. How does the revolution affect the rich and the poor differently?

In 'Baadal Raag' Nirala transforms the natural cloud into a powerful symbol of social revolution. The cloud floats over the 'ocean of the breeze' as the shadow of sorrow over fleeting happiness, and spreads the 'flooding illusion of a merciless revolution' over the burnt heart of the world. Its trumpet-like thunder and torrential rain are the music ('raag') of upheaval. The revolution affects the two classes in exactly opposite ways. For the oppressed poor — pictured as sleeping seeds buried in the earth — the cloud's roar is a call to awaken; full of the hope of new life, they raise their heads and look up eagerly. For the rich and powerful — pictured as proud, sky-touching mountains and tall sal trees — the cloud is sheer terror: lightning lays hundreds of these 'warriors' low, their bodies wounded and shattered, the seas tremble and the frightened trees sink into the earth. Amid this weeping and ruin of the exploiters, the revolutionary hero's deep, thunderous laughter rings out in triumph. Finally, the emaciated farmer, drained to mere bones by exploitation, calls out to the cloud as the very ocean of life. Thus Nirala shows revolution as destructive for the unjust rich but creative and life-giving for the suffering poor, making the cloud both a terror and a saviour.

Q. 'Baadal Raag' is both a poem of nature and a poem of social protest.' Justify this statement with reference to its imagery and message.

On the surface 'Baadal Raag' is a vivid nature poem: it describes the floating cloud, the thunder and lightning, the torrential downpour, the trembling sea, the wind-shaken trees and the rising smoke with rich Chhayavadi imagery. But beneath this natural scene lies a powerful poem of social protest. Every nature image is a symbol — the cloud is revolution, the proud mountains and tall sal trees are the arrogant rich, the seeds buried in the earth and the bony farmer are the exploited poor, and the lightning is the destructive force that levels the mighty. Nirala, himself a victim of poverty and a 'poet of rebellion', uses these symbols to attack the injustice of a society where a few have sucked the life out of the many. The message is unmistakable: the unjust order resting on exploitation cannot endure; the storm of revolution must come to destroy the powerful and restore hope and life to the downtrodden. Thus the poem fuses the music of nature with the cry for social change, making it at once a nature poem and a poem of protest.
