About the author: Phanishwarnath Renu (1921-1977) is regarded as one of the most influential Hindi fiction writers after Premchand and the foremost exponent of the 'aanchalik' (regional) novel in Hindi. Born in Aurahi-Hingna village in the Purnia district of Bihar, he drew the life-breath of his writing from rural Bihar — its folk songs, dialects, festivals, smells and sounds. He was an active participant in the freedom movement of 1942 and later in the Nepali liberation struggle, and protested against the Emergency by returning his Padma Shri. His famous novel 'Maila Aanchal' (1954) is a landmark of regional fiction. Renu's prose is intensely musical and sensory; he weaves the rhythms of folk life, dialect and sound (here, the beat of the drum) into the very texture of his narrative. Other notable works include 'Parti Parikatha', 'Thes', and the celebrated story 'Maare Gaye Gulfaam' (filmed as 'Teesri Kasam').
📖 Detailed Explanation
The story opens on a winter night drenched in darkness and dread. The cold and the spreading epidemic have cast a pall of fear and sorrow over the whole village. Amlatas and sheesham trees stand silent like ghosts in the dark; the night seems to weep through the cries of jackals and the hooting of owls. The fading starlight looks like a sick man's faint smile. Children groan in fevered sleep and mothers' lips have gone dry from grief. Renu first builds this thick atmosphere of terror, defeat and death so that, against it, one single life-giving force can shine out.

In that engulfing silence only one sound keeps battling the night — the resonant beat of Luttan Singh's drum: 'chat-dhा, gid-dhा... dhाक-dhिना, dhाक-dhिना.' This drum-beat is the soul of the story. It steadies the dying, breathes courage into the despairing, and proclaims that life has not yet surrendered. Renu uses the drum almost as a living character, a heartbeat that keeps the village alive.

The narrative then turns back to Luttan Singh's life-story. Orphaned at nine, he was raised by his widowed mother-in-law, whom the villagers tormented. To take revenge and prove himself, Luttan threw himself into wrestling, building his body by tending cattle and drinking milk. His fame was sealed the day he challenged the famous 'Sher-ka-Bachcha' (Lion's Cub), the champion wrestler of the royal court at a fair. The crowd and even the king mocked him, but spurred on by the rhythm of the drum, Luttan flung the mighty champion to the ground and won.

Pleased by his courage, the king brought Luttan to his court and made him the royal wrestler. For years Luttan lived in honour, defeated every challenger and even Sher-ka-Bachcha's pupils. He raised his two sons there after his wife's death, and the drum remained his companion and 'guru' — he said it was the drum's beat that had always told him what move to make. Those were the golden days of the wrestling arena, when the whole region thronged to watch the bouts and the drum announced festivity and strength.

But time turns. The old king dies and his English-educated son ascends the throne. The new king has no taste for wrestling; he is drawn to horse-racing and the modern world. The royal patronage of the akhada (wrestling arena) is withdrawn, and Luttan and his sons are turned out of the court. The expensive sport that depended on the king's purse cannot survive the change. Luttan retires to the village, builds a hut and lives by farming, still training his sons and beating his drum in the evenings.

Then comes the cruellest blow — famine followed by a deadly epidemic (malaria and plague). Death stalks the village every day; corpses are carried out of homes daily, and the dim, despairing nights are full of moaning. In this calamity Luttan's two strong young sons also fall ill and die one after another. The old wrestler, broken inside, performs their last rites — yet that very night, defeating his own grief, he picks up the drum again and beats it, because its sound is the only medicine the dying villagers have left.

Luttan declares that the drum's beat keeps the breath of the village alive. And so, night after night, his drum challenges the silence of death. But one night the drum falls silent. In the morning the people find Luttan dead, lying lifeless in his akhada. His disciples, following his last wish, cremate him on a pyre lit with the very wood of his arena. With his death the drum, the akhada and an entire age of folk-art and physical valour come to an end — silenced by the indifference of the new order, famine, and disease.

📝 Summary
On dark, epidemic-stricken winter nights, when famine and disease have spread terror and death across a Bihar village, only one sound dares to fight the silence — the beat of the wrestler Luttan Singh's drum. The story flashes back to Luttan's life: an orphan raised by an ill-treated widowed mother-in-law, he turned to wrestling for self-respect, and won fame by defeating the royal champion 'Sher-ka-Bachcha', spurred on by the rhythm of the drum he treated as his guru. The pleased king made him the royal wrestler and for years he reigned in glory, raising his two sons in the court after his wife's death. But when the old king died, his modern, English-educated son withdrew all patronage from wrestling; Luttan was dismissed and returned to the village. Then famine and a deadly epidemic struck, taking even his two strong sons. Crushed but unbroken, the old man kept beating his drum every night to pour courage into the dying village, saying its sound kept the people's spirits alive. One night the drum fell silent; in the morning Luttan was found dead in his akhada. His disciples cremated him on the wood of his own arena. The story is a moving tribute to folk-art, courage and the value of physical culture, and a lament for a dying tradition crushed by changing times, official apathy, and disease.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea is that art, courage and the human will to live can stand up even against death and despair. Through the wrestler's drum, Renu shows how folk-art and self-respect once nourished rural life — and how the indifference of a 'modern', changing order, together with famine and disease, silenced that life-giving tradition. The drum-beat symbolises the indomitable spirit that refuses to surrender even in the darkest times.

🧭 Message & Title
The story teaches that human courage, art and self-respect are the truest sources of strength in adversity — a single resolute spirit can give hope to many even when death surrounds them. It also warns that when society and those in power turn indifferent to their own culture and to the arts that sustain ordinary people, a precious heritage and the dignity of countless lives are lost forever. We must value our folk traditions, our artists, and the will to fight on against despair.

The title 'Pahalwan ki Dholak' (The Wrestler's Drum) is wholly apt, for the drum is the heart and soul of the story. It is Luttan's companion and guru, the rhythm that inspires his every wrestling move and his victory over Sher-ka-Bachcha. In the dark days of the epidemic it becomes a life-giving force, pouring courage into the dying village. The drum's beat runs through the narrative as a leitmotif, and when it finally falls silent, Luttan too is dead and an entire tradition ends. Thus the drum embodies the wrestler's life, art, struggle and spirit — the title rightly places it at the centre.

The drum symbolises the indomitable will to live, courage, and the spirit of folk-art that sustains life. Its life-giving beat keeps the dying village hopeful, and when it finally falls silent, it signals Luttan's death and the end of an entire tradition.

Renu's story works on two levels. On one hand it celebrates the indomitable human spirit: Luttan rises from a tormented orphan to a champion through sheer courage and self-respect; and even after losing his court, his livelihood and both his sons to the epidemic, he refuses to surrender to grief, beating his drum every night to pour courage into the dying village. His drum, fighting the silence of death, is the very voice of the will to live. On the other hand the story is a lament for a dying tradition. When the modern, English-educated king replaces his wrestling-loving father, royal patronage of the akhada ends, and a whole culture of physical valour and folk-art begins to wither. Famine and epidemic complete the destruction, and with Luttan's death the drum, the akhada and an entire age fall silent. Thus the story at once glorifies courage and art and mourns their defeat by changing times, official apathy and disaster — making it both a tribute and an elegy.

Renu, the master of 'aanchalik' (regional) writing, makes sound and atmosphere central to the story. He first builds a thick, eerie atmosphere of the epidemic nights — darkness, weeping night, jackals' cries, owls' hooting, trees standing like ghosts and starlight like a sick man's faint smile — to convey terror, grief and death. Against this he sets the living sound of the drum, written in onomatopoeic words ('chat-dha, gid-dha... dhak-dhina'), so that the reader almost hears it. This produces a powerful contrast: silence versus sound, death versus life, despair versus courage. The same technique of contrast runs through the whole story — the golden, festive days of the akhada against the ruined present, royal honour against final destitution. Renu's musical, sensory prose and his use of folk dialect root the tale in rural Bihar and lend it authenticity, while the recurring drum-beat acts as a unifying leitmotif. Together, sound, atmosphere and contrast give the story its haunting, deeply emotional effect.

It is the drum-beat of the wrestler Luttan Singh. At this time the village is gripped by famine and a deadly epidemic; people are dying daily, and the nights are dark, silent and full of fear and grief.

The drum-beat fights the silence of death; it pours courage and hope into the despairing, dying villagers and keeps their will to live alive. It is the one life-giving force in the darkness.

It is onomatopoeia (sound-imagery) — the words imitate the actual sound of the drum. It makes the reader almost 'hear' the beat, lending the prose a musical quality and intensifying the contrast between the living sound and the surrounding silence of death.
