Cover Poster

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

Poem one — 'Kavita Ke Bahane'. The poet says that a poem is a flight, taken on the pretext (bahane) of a bird. But the bird can hardly understand the true range of a poem's flight. A bird flies only in the open sky; a poem, however, flies everywhere — outside and inside, into this house and that house, into the human heart and imagination. What it means to soar on the wings of a poem — how can a mere bird know that? The poet thus suggests that the bird's flight has limits, but a poem's flight is limitless.

Here the poet compares a poem to blossoming, taken on the pretext of flowers. But the flower cannot understand the true blossoming of a poem. A flower blooms, spreads fragrance for a little while, and then withers. A poem, however, blooms everywhere — outside and inside, in this house and that — and spreads its fragrance (its joy and meaning) without ever withering. What it means to remain fragrant forever, without fading — how can a flower know that? Thus a flower's beauty is short-lived, but a poem's beauty and freshness are eternal.

In the last stanza the poet says that a poem is a play, taken on the pretext of children. A child's play knows no boundaries — a child does not differentiate between his own house and another's, between known and unknown, between mine and yours. In the same way, a poem too breaks all such barriers and makes every house one. To make all houses into one — to dissolve every difference and boundary — only children truly know that secret, because their innocent world is free of divisions. The poet thus links the boundless, uniting nature of poetry with the limitless imagination and innocence of children.

Poem two — 'Baat Seedhi Thi Par'. The matter (the idea the poet wished to express) was simple and straight, but once it got caught in the tangle of language and became a little crooked. In trying to grasp and express it correctly, the poet turned the language upside down, twisted and broke it, and rotated it this way and that, hoping that either the idea would come out right, or at least would break free from the trap of language. This describes a poet's struggle when he tries too hard to use clever, ornamental language and ends up losing the simple thought.

After a long, clumsy struggle (the 'khatar-patar' or rattling and fumbling with words), when at last the language seemed to move smoothly and straight, the poet too breathed a sigh of relief — feeling he had finally fixed it. And yet, ironically, all that effort had made his original simple matter even more complicated and tangled than before. The poet thus mocks his own false satisfaction: the polished surface hid a deeper confusion.

Even after putting in all his strength, the matter still did not come right. So, defeated, the poet forced the idea into place like a nail hammered into wood — pushing it in by sheer effort rather than natural ease. On the surface everything looked fine and proper, but deep within, something felt stuck and uneasy, as if some difficulty were still caught there. This 'nail' image powerfully shows how forced, artificial language only damages the natural beauty of an idea.

The poet now uses the image of a screw (chudi). The 'thread' of the screw was stripped — meaning the natural grip between idea and language was lost — and so the matter kept revolving uselessly in the language without ever holding fast. The more he tried to tighten it, the looser it became. Seeing no easy way out, the poet struggled hard and clumsily with it. Watching this awkward wrestling, people sarcastically asked him: 'Is this then the great achievement (siddhi) of your language and craft?' — mocking the very cleverness he had been so proud of.

And still, the matter did not come right. The poet admits he never learned the trick of using language as mere acrobatics or showmanship ('kartab ki bhasha'). The screw was stripped, and the idea kept turning uselessly in the words. Drenched in sweat now, the poet finally began to look for a simple, easy and comfortable way to say his thought. For the truth is — the matter was straight and simple all along, and it could be expressed not through the crookedness and trickery of language, but only through ease, naturalness and simplicity. This is the central message: simple ideas demand simple, honest expression.

📝 Summary

These are two short reflective poems by Kunwar Narayan from his collection 'In Dinon'. The first, 'Kavita Ke Bahane', meditates on the limitless nature and power of poetry. The poet compares a poem successively to the flight of a bird, the blossoming of a flower and the play of children. In each case he shows that poetry surpasses its natural model: a bird's flight has limits, but a poem flies everywhere, outside and inside, from house to house; a flower's bloom withers, but a poem blossoms and spreads fragrance without ever fading; and like a child's boundless play, a poem dissolves all barriers and makes every house one. Poetry thus has no bounds of space, time or imagination. The second poem, 'Baat Seedhi Thi Par', is about the relationship between thought and language. The idea the poet wished to express was simple and straight, but caught in the tangle of clever, ornamental language it became crooked. The harder the poet twisted and forced the language, the more complicated his simple thought became — like a screw whose thread is stripped, turning uselessly without holding. People mock him, asking if this is the 'achievement' of his craft. Exhausted and sweating, the poet finally realises the truth: a straight thought can be expressed not through linguistic trickery but only through ease, simplicity and naturalness.

💡 Central Idea

Together the two poems explore the nature of poetry and poetic language. 'Kavita Ke Bahane' celebrates poetry as a boundless, ever-fresh, unifying creative force that transcends the limits of nature, time and space, comparable yet superior to a bird's flight, a flower's bloom and a child's play. 'Baat Seedhi Thi Par' conveys the complementary truth that this power is achieved only through simplicity: when a poet abandons honest, natural expression and indulges in clever verbal acrobatics, a simple idea becomes hopelessly tangled. True poetic 'achievement' lies in saying a straight thing straight.

🎯 Themes

  • The limitless power and freedom of poetry: In 'Kavita Ke Bahane', poetry is shown to break every boundary of space, time and imagination. Unlike the bird, flower or child it borrows as 'pretexts', poetry can travel everywhere and never fades, proving that the creative imagination has no limits.

  • Poetry as a force of unity and innocence: The image of children's play, where all houses become one, presents poetry as something that erases the artificial divisions of 'mine' and 'yours'. Like a child's pure heart, poetry unites people and dissolves barriers.

  • The struggle between thought and language: 'Baat Seedhi Thi Par' dramatises the tension every writer feels between a clear inner idea and its expression. When language is forced and twisted, the simple thought is distorted; idea and word must hold together naturally.

  • The supremacy of simplicity over artifice: The poet rejects 'kartab ki bhasha' — language used as mere acrobatics and showmanship. The strongest expression is the simplest and most honest one; a straight thought can only be said with ease, not with verbal trickery.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The two poems carry a single, complementary message about creativity and communication. Real creativity is boundless and life-giving, but it can be reached only through honesty and simplicity. A writer must not get lost in showing off clever, ornamental language; when the idea is straight, the words too must be straight. Forced, artificial expression strips the natural grip between thought and word and ruins both. The mark of true mastery is the ability to say a simple thing simply and beautifully.

Justification of the Title

The titles are perfectly apt. 'Kavita Ke Bahane' (On the Pretext of Poetry) signals that the poet uses the bird, flower and child only as 'pretexts' or excuses to explore the much larger subject — the nature and reach of poetry itself; the very structure of the poem ('chidiya ke bahane', 'phoolon ke bahane', 'bachchon ke bahane') grows out of this phrase. 'Baat Seedhi Thi Par' (The Matter Was Straight, But...) captures the whole poem in its first line: the idea was simple and straight, but ('par') it got tangled in language. The conjunction 'par' carries the entire irony and conflict of the poem, making the title both a summary and a hook.

🪄 Literary Devices

The repetition of similar consonant sounds in paired words creates rhythm and a sense of restless effort, suggesting the poet's clumsy wrestling with language.

Mānvīkaran / Upmā (Personification & Simile) — “बात फँस गई; बात की चूड़ी मर गई; कील की तरह उसे ठोंक दिया”

The abstract 'baat' (matter/idea) is personified as something that gets stuck, whose thread can 'die', and is compared through simile to a nail and a stripped screw — turning an abstract idea into a vivid physical experience.

Pratīk / Bimb (Symbol & Imagery) — “चिड़िया, फूल, बच्चे (कविता के); कील और चूड़ी (भाषा के)”

The bird, flower and child are symbols of free flight, beauty and innocent boundlessness; the nail and the stripped screw are powerful symbols of forced, artificial language. These concrete images carry the poems' abstract ideas.

Repeated lines and a recurring refrain bind the stanzas of 'Kavita Ke Bahane' together and stress its theme of boundlessness, while repetition in the second poem emphasises the futility of the poet's effort.

The people's question is bitterly ironic — what the poet thought was a 'siddhi' (achievement) was actually a failure. The whole second poem satirises the misuse of language as mere showmanship.

Muhāvarā / Lokokti (Idiomatic, colloquial expression) — “चूड़ी मर जाना, राहत की साँस लेना, पसीने से लथपथ, बात बनना”

Kunwar Narayan deliberately uses everyday, conversational idioms and the language of a mechanic/craftsman, which suits a poem that argues for natural, simple expression over ornamental diction.

🎓 Exam Questions & Answers

Short Answer Questions
Q. In 'Kavita Ke Bahane', why can the bird not understand the flight of a poem?

A bird flies only in the open sky and its flight has clear limits. A poem, however, flies everywhere — outside and inside, from this house to that, into the heart and imagination — and its flight is limitless. Since the bird cannot cross these boundaries, it cannot grasp the true range of a poem's flight.

Q. What is meant by 'बिना मुरझाए महकने' of a poem?

A flower blooms, spreads fragrance for a short while and then withers. A poem is compared to such blossoming, but unlike a flower it never fades. 'Bina murjhaye mahakne' means that a poem spreads its fragrance — its joy, beauty and meaning — forever, without ever withering, proving that a poem's freshness is eternal.

Q. What is meant by 'बात की चूड़ी मर गई'?

It is drawn from a screw whose threads (chudi) get worn out, so it keeps revolving without gripping. The poet means that the natural grip between his idea and the language was lost: the more he forced ornamental, twisted language, the more the simple thought slipped and turned uselessly, refusing to hold or come out right.

Q. What did the people ask the poet, and what does their question imply?

Watching the poet wrestle clumsily with language, people asked sarcastically, 'Kya yahi tumhari bhasha ki siddhi hai?' (Is this the achievement of your language?). The question is bitterly ironic — it implies that the poet's much-prized cleverness with words had failed, and that twisting a simple thought into knots is no achievement at all.

Long Answer Questions
Q. How does Kunwar Narayan show in 'Kavita Ke Bahane' that poetry is limitless? Discuss the three comparisons he uses.

In 'Kavita Ke Bahane' Kunwar Narayan establishes the boundlessness of poetry through three rising comparisons, each of which poetry surpasses. First, he compares a poem to a bird's flight: but while a bird flies only in the open sky, a poem flies everywhere — outside and inside, from this house to that — so the bird cannot understand a poem's true flight. Second, he compares a poem to the blossoming of a flower: but a flower blooms briefly and withers, whereas a poem blossoms everywhere and spreads its fragrance 'bina murjhaye', without ever fading; thus its beauty is eternal. Third, he compares a poem to the play of children: a child's play knows no boundaries of mine and yours, known and unknown, so it makes all houses one. Only children truly understand this secret of erasing all barriers. Through these three images the poet shows that poetry crosses every limit of space (it goes everywhere), of time (it never withers) and of human division (it unites all). Significantly, in each case the natural model — bird, flower, child — is only a 'bahana', a pretext, that helps us glimpse a creative power far greater than itself. The poem thus celebrates the limitless reach, the timeless freshness and the uniting innocence of poetry and the creative imagination.

Q. What does 'Baat Seedhi Thi Par' tell us about the relationship between thought and language? What message does the poet finally arrive at?

'Baat Seedhi Thi Par' presents the close and delicate relationship between thought ('baat') and language ('bhasha'). The poet had a simple, straight idea to express, but once it got caught in the tangle of clever, ornamental language it turned crooked. In trying to recover it he turned the language upside down, twisted, broke and rotated it. For a while it seemed to run smoothly and he sighed in relief — but in truth his simple idea had become even more complicated. He then forced the matter into place 'like a nail', so that on the surface it looked fine but inside something stayed stuck. Using the image of a stripped screw whose 'chudi' has died, he shows that the natural grip between idea and word was lost, and the thought kept turning uselessly. People mocked him: was this the 'siddhi' of his language? Drenched in sweat, the poet finally admits that he never learned the trick of 'kartab ki bhasha' — language used as mere acrobatic showmanship — and realises the truth: the matter was straight all along, and a straight matter can be expressed not through the crookedness of language but only through ease, simplicity and naturalness. The poet's message is therefore that thought and word must hold together honestly; the highest skill in writing is the ability to say a simple thing simply, while ornamental trickery only distorts and destroys both the idea and the language.

Q. To what does the poet compare a poem in these lines, and why?

The poet compares a poem to the blossoming of a flower. Just as a flower blooms and spreads fragrance, a poem too blooms and spreads its beauty and meaning. The comparison is made to then show how poetry actually surpasses the flower.

Q. Why can the flower not understand the blossoming of a poem?

A flower blooms only for a short while and then withers, and it blooms in one place. A poem blooms everywhere — outside and inside, in this house and that — and never withers. Because the flower cannot bloom without fading and cannot reach everywhere, it cannot understand a poem's blossoming.

Q. What quality of poetry is highlighted by the phrase '

It highlights the eternal, never-fading nature of poetry. Unlike a flower's short-lived fragrance, a poem's fragrance — its joy, beauty and meaning — lasts forever. This shows that poetry is timeless and its freshness never ends.

Q. What had the poet been trying to do, and with what result?

The poet had been trying to express his simple, straight idea by twisting and forcing ornamental language. Despite putting in all his strength, 'baat nahin bani' — the idea simply would not come right; his effort failed and the thought remained tangled.

Q. Explain the simile '

Defeated, the poet forced the idea into place just as a nail is hammered into wood — by sheer force rather than natural ease. The simile shows that the expression was not smooth or organic but violently pushed in, which is why it could never sit right.

Q. What is the contrast between 'ऊपर से ठीक-ठाक' and 'अंदर ही अंदर'?

On the surface ('upar se theek-thaak') the expression looked correct and polished, but deep within ('andar hi andar') something still felt stuck and uneasy. The contrast exposes the gap between an outwardly clever appearance and an inner failure of meaning — the idea was not truly expressed.
