Overview

About the author: Tulsidas (c. 1532-1623) was one of the greatest poets of the Hindi Bhakti (devotional) tradition and a supreme devotee of Lord Rama. Born at Rajapur in present-day Uttar Pradesh, he composed his works mainly in the Awadhi and Braj dialects. His monumental epic, the 'Ramcharitmanas', written in Awadhi, brought the story of Rama to the common people and is revered as a sacred text in north India. Among his other celebrated works are the 'Kavitavali' and 'Vinay Patrika' (in Braj bhasha), 'Gitavali', 'Dohavali' and 'Hanuman Bahuk'. Tulsidas blended the devotional fervour of bhakti with deep human feeling, social concern and remarkable mastery of poetic form. Through Rama he presented an ideal of perfect conduct (maryada), while also voicing the sufferings and anxieties of ordinary life. He is honoured as a 'lokmangal' (people's welfare) poet whose verses combine devotion, ethics and human emotion.

(Kavitavali) Workmen, farming folk, traders, beggars, bards, servants, nimble acrobats, thieves, spies, jugglers — all toil only to fill their bellies. To feed the stomach people learn skills, cultivate accomplishments, climb mountains and roam the dense forests all day hunting. Doing high and low deeds, acting righteously or unrighteously, they burn for the belly's sake — they even sell their sons and daughters. Tulsidas says: this fire of hunger is greater than the fire of the sea (the submarine 'badavanal' fire); only Rama, dark as a rain-cloud, can quench it.

(Lakshman-Moorchha aur Ram ka Vilap) Lakshmana lies unconscious on the battlefield, struck by Meghnad's deadly shakti weapon. The physician Sushena says only the Sanjivani herb, found on a mountain far away, can save him — and it must be brought before daybreak. Hanuman flies off through the sky; unable to identify the single herb, he lifts the whole mountain and carries it back. This dramatic episode forms the background to Rama's lament over his wounded brother.

📝 Summary
This selection brings together two contrasting moods of Tulsidas's poetry. The first part, from the 'Kavitavali' (Uttar Kand), consists of three verses. In the first two, the poet paints a grim picture of poverty, hunger and unemployment in society. He says that every class of person — workman, farmer, trader, beggar, servant, even thief and spy — toils only to fill the belly; the fire of hunger is greater than the fire of the ocean and can be quenched only by Rama's grace. Farmers have no farming, beggars no alms, traders no trade, servants no work; poverty, like a ten-headed Ravana, has crushed the world, and Tulsidas cries out in anguish, appealing to Rama, the friend of the poor. The third verse expresses Tulsidas's self-respect and unshakable devotion: people may call him anything — rogue, recluse, Rajput or weaver — but he is the proud slave of Rama alone, free of all worldly and caste bonds, begging his food and content with nothing. The second part, 'Lakshman-Moorchha aur Ram ka Vilap', is taken from the Lanka Kand of the Ramcharitmanas. Lakshmana, struck unconscious by Meghnad's shakti, lies dying. Only the Sanjivani herb can save him, and Hanuman flies off to fetch it. As the night passes without his return, Rama, holding his brother to his heart, breaks into a deeply human lament — he says he would not have obeyed his father had he known this would happen; a brother is irreplaceable while wives, wealth and sons can be regained; without Lakshmana he is like a bird without wings; how will he show his face in Ayodhya or face Sumitra? At that very moment Hanuman returns with the mountain, Lakshmana is revived, and Rama's sorrow turns to joy. Together the two parts reveal both the social concern and the tender human-divine emotion in Tulsidas's poetry.

💡 Central Idea
The selection conveys two central ideas. From 'Kavitavali', it expresses Tulsidas's deep concern for the social realities of poverty, hunger and unemployment, along with his firm faith that ultimate refuge lies only in Rama, the friend of the poor; the third verse asserts the poet's self-respect and single-minded devotion above all caste and social pressures. From 'Lakshman-Moorchha', it presents the tender, human face of the divine Rama, whose grief over his brother reveals the depth of brotherly love and shows that god incarnate also experiences ordinary human emotions.

They also remind us of the priceless, irreplaceable value of brotherly love and the depth of selfless human relationships, showing through Rama that even greatness is rooted in genuine human feeling and humility.

The combined title is fully apt. 'Kavitavali (Uttar Kand se)' names the work and section from which the first three verses are drawn, where Tulsidas reflects on worldly hardship and devotion. 'Lakshman-Moorchha aur Ram ka Vilap' precisely names the second episode — Lakshmana's swoon (moorchha) caused by Meghnad's weapon and Rama's lament (vilap) over him. Each title directly indicates its central content, so the headings truthfully guide the reader to the subject matter of both selections.

Tulsidas says that all classes of people — workmen, farmers, traders, beggars, servants, even thieves — toil only to fill their belly (pet). He declares that the fire of hunger (the belly's fire) is greater even than the badavanal, the submarine fire of the ocean, and only Rama's grace can quench it.

Tulsidas says people may call him anything — a rogue, a recluse, a Rajput or a weaver — it makes no difference to him. He will not marry into anyone's family nor depend on anyone. He is the proud slave only of Rama; he begs his food, sleeps anywhere, and has nothing to take from or give to the world. This shows his self-respect and freedom from all social and caste bondage.

In his grief over Lakshmana, Rama feels that a wife, wealth and sons can be obtained again, but a true brother born of the same mother cannot be replaced. So he says he would gladly have borne the world's disgrace and that losing a wife would have been no great loss, whereas the loss of his brother is unbearable. This highlights the supreme value he places on fraternal love.

Rama compares his condition without Lakshmana to a bird without wings (which becomes utterly helpless), a serpent without its jewel (mani), and an excellent elephant without its trunk. These three images powerfully convey how incomplete and helpless he feels in his brother's absence.

In the Kavitavali verses Tulsidas emerges as a poet of deep social awareness. He observes that every class of society — workmen, farmers, traders, beggars, bards, servants, acrobats, even thieves and spies — labours with a single aim: to fill the belly. People learn skills, climb mountains, roam forests hunting, perform good and evil deeds, and in extreme distress even sell their own children — all driven by hunger. He calls this hunger a fire greater than the badavanal of the ocean. In the second verse the picture grows darker: the farmer has no farming, the beggar no alms, the trader no trade, the servant no service. Deprived of their livelihood, people wander in anxiety asking one another, 'Where shall we go, what shall we do?' Tulsidas personifies this all-pervading poverty as a ten-headed Ravana (darid-dasanan) crushing the whole world, and cries out 'haha' in anguish. Yet his vision is not merely one of despair: as a bhakti poet he offers a clear solution — surrender to Rama. He addresses Rama as Deenabandhu, the friend of the poor, declaring that only His grace can quench the fire of hunger and relieve the world's suffering. Thus Tulsidas blends acute realism about economic distress with his abiding faith that devotion to god is the ultimate refuge of the helpless, making these verses both a social document and a devotional appeal.

This episode from the Lanka Kand beautifully reveals the human face of Rama, the very God whom Tulsidas worships. When Lakshmana falls unconscious from Meghnad's shakti weapon and Hanuman has not yet returned with the Sanjivani, Rama does not behave like a detached, all-powerful deity; instead, holding his brother to his heart, he 'speaks words like an ordinary man' (manuj anusari). His lament is steeped in pathos. He says that had he known he would lose his brother in the forest, he would not have obeyed even his father's command. He philosophises that wives, wealth, sons, home and family can be regained again and again, but a true brother born of the same mother is irreplaceable. He compares himself without Lakshmana to a wingless bird, a gemless serpent and a trunkless elephant. He is tormented by social honour too — with what face will he return to Ayodhya, having lost his beloved brother for the sake of a woman? He would rather have borne disgrace; the loss of a wife is nothing beside this. Tenderly addressing Lakshmana as his 'son', he grieves over how he will face Sumitra, whose only support was her son, and praises Lakshmana as a brother utterly free of selfishness even in dreams. The poet adds that no creature could hear this lament without weeping. Thus Tulsidas shows that the avatar, though divine, fully experiences human love, attachment, helplessness and grief — and it is precisely this blending of divinity with tender humanity that makes Rama so endearing and the episode so moving. At that very moment Hanuman returns with the mountain, Lakshmana revives, and grief turns to joy.

The 'fire' being spoken of is the fire of hunger or the belly (pet ki aag). It is compared to the badavanal — the legendary submarine fire of the ocean — and is said to be even greater than it.

It shows that Tulsidas combines acute awareness of the social reality of hunger and poverty with deep devotion: he diagnoses the worldly problem realistically, yet sees its ultimate remedy in surrender to Rama, blending lokmangal (people's welfare) with bhakti.
