Aroh Poem

Overview

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

(Rubai 1) A mother stands in the courtyard holding her child, a piece of the moon, in her arms. Hiding the baby behind her, she playfully asks the moon, 'where has it gone?' She does not know from where, on which morning, that joy may come again. She keeps wandering and playing about, feeding and amusing her little child.

(Rubai 2) The mother bathes her child with pure, clean, brimming water, and then lovingly combs his tangled, soft hair. With how much affection she feeds him, coaxing every morsel into his mouth. How dearly the mother loves her well-adorned, charming little child!

(Rubai 3) On the morning of Rakshabandhan the gentle, sweet eastern breeze flows softly. There is a wonderful charm on the rakhi tied on the child's hand. With the fragrant rakhi of the month of Saawan placed on her brother's wrist, the bud of the sister's heart blossoms with joy.

(Ghazal) Just as fresh young buds gently loosen the delicate knots of their petals, the deep wounds of my heart too keep smiling/opening up now and then. See with what silence the stars keep blinking in this world; we too, you and I, now keep blinking our eyes (passing our days quietly) in this world, again and again.

On every speck of this universe a strange state, like a sweet intoxication, has spread. People still speak of that beloved eye and the love it held. The night, sleep, the story it tells — ah, what a wondrous thing youth is! Perhaps even death has a cure, but there is no remedy for the restless ache of life itself.

This lesson brings together two forms of Urdu poetry by Firaq Gorakhpuri — the rubai and the ghazal. The rubaiyaan (quatrains) are tender domestic pictures of Indian family life centred on the love between a mother and her child and the affection between a brother and sister. In them a mother holds her child like 'a piece of the moon', plays a game of hide-and-seek with the moon, bathes him in pure water, combs his hair and feeds him with deep love; another rubai paints the festival of Rakshabandhan, when the fragrant rakhi of Saawan on the brother's wrist makes the bud of the sister's heart blossom. The ghazal then shifts to a more philosophical and emotional plane: the poet compares the gentle opening of buds to the smiling 'wounds' of his heart, the silent blinking of stars to the quiet passing of human life, and reflects that while death may have a cure, the restless ache and beauty of life has none. Together the poems show Firaq's special gift — pouring Indian images, festivals and domestic tenderness into the classical Urdu forms.

💡 Central Idea

Read in English

Through the rubaiyaan and the ghazal Firaq Gorakhpuri celebrates the tenderness of Indian domestic life — a mother's love, a sister's affection, the festival of Rakshabandhan — and then meditates on the beauty and pain of human life and youth, suggesting that even sorrow, like the opening of a bud, has its own quiet beauty.

🎯 Themes

    Read in English

Maternal love (vatsalya): The rubaiyaan present pure, selfless mother-love through everyday acts — holding the child, bathing, combing his hair and feeding him — making the home itself a sacred space of affection.

    Read in English

Indian family life and festivals: The poet weaves Indian culture into Urdu poetry — the courtyard, the bond of brother and sister, and the festival of Rakshabandhan with the fragrant rakhi of Saawan.

    Read in English

Beauty within pain: In the ghazal the deep wounds of the heart 'smile' like opening buds, suggesting that suffering and beauty are intertwined and that sorrow too can be borne with grace.

Life, youth and transience: The blinking stars and the wondrous nature of youth lead the poet to reflect that while death may have a cure, the restless ache of living and the fleeting beauty of life have none.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Read in English

The poems teach us to cherish the simple, everyday tenderness of family life — a mother's love, a sister's affection, the warmth of festivals — and to accept that life carries both beauty and pain together; even our wounds can be borne with dignity, like a bud quietly unfolding into a flower.

Justification of the Title

Read in English

The title 'Rubaiyaan, Ghazal' is apt and direct because it simply names the two classical forms of Urdu poetry that the lesson presents. 'Rubaiyaan' (the plural of rubai) refers to the four-line quatrains that paint Indian domestic scenes of mother-love and Rakshabandhan, while 'Ghazal' names the lyrical form in which Firaq reflects on life, beauty and pain. The title thus honestly tells the reader the poetic genres they are about to experience and highlights Firaq's mastery of both forms.

Long Answer Questions
Q. How do the rubaiyaan of Firaq Gorakhpuri present a tender picture of Indian domestic and family life? Explain with reference to the poem.

The rubaiyaan of Firaq Gorakhpuri are exquisite miniatures of Indian family life, centred on love and tenderness. In the first rubai a mother stands in the courtyard holding her child whom she calls 'a piece of the moon'; she hides the baby and playfully plays hide-and-seek with the moon, wandering about and amusing her child. The second rubai shows her bathing the child with pure, brimming water, combing his tangled hair and feeding him with deep affection, conveying the selfless, everyday devotion of a mother. The third rubai turns to the festival of Rakshabandhan: on a fragrant Saawan morning, with a gentle eastern breeze, the rakhi shines on the child's wrist and the bud of the sister's heart blossoms with joy. Through these ordinary domestic acts — bathing, feeding, combing hair, tying a rakhi — Firaq elevates the Indian home into a sacred space of love. His genius lies in pouring such Indian images, festivals and household tenderness into the classical Urdu rubai, giving the form a warm, distinctly Indian heart.

Q. Discuss how the ghazal of Firaq Gorakhpuri blends the beauty of nature with the pain and philosophy of human life.

In the ghazal Firaq Gorakhpuri moves from the warm domesticity of the rubaiyaan to a deeper, philosophical reflection, yet he keeps nature constantly by his side. He compares the deep wounds of his heart to fresh young buds that gently loosen the knots of their petals — suggesting that pain, like a blossoming flower, can have its own quiet beauty, and that the heart 'smiles' even as it bleeds. He then looks at the stars blinking silently in the vast sky and sees in them an image of human life: just as the stars pass their existence noiselessly, so too 'you and I' spend our days quietly in this world. The poet feels that a strange intoxication, a dreamy stupor, spreads over every speck of the universe, and he marvels at the wonder of youth — its nights, its sleep, its untold stories. Finally he reaches a profound thought: death may perhaps have a cure, but the restless ache and unending longing of life itself has no remedy. Thus Firaq weaves together the beauty of buds and stars with the sorrow and mystery of being alive, showing that in his poetry nature and the human heart breathe as one.
