📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

The poet prays to God, saying that he does not ask to be saved from misfortunes and calamities. He only wishes that he may never feel afraid when troubles come. He does not even seek consolation for his grief-stricken, sorrow-burnt heart; he only asks that he may always be able to conquer his sorrows.
तो अपने बल का पौरुष न हिले;

The poet prays that even if he finds no helper anywhere, his own strength and manly courage should never waver. If he has to suffer loss in the world and is deceived of any gain, he wishes to console his own mind and keep humility alive within himself, so that he does not become bitter or proud, but bears the loss with patience.

The poet says he does not pray that God should rescue and protect him every single day. He only wishes to have the unimpaired strength to swim across (the ocean of troubles) by himself. He does not ask God to lighten his burden of sorrows, nor does he want consolation. He only prays for the strength to carry that burden himself.

'Aatmtraan' (Self-defence / A Prayer for Self-strength) is a unique prayer by Rabindranath Tagore. Unlike ordinary prayers in which a devotee asks God to remove troubles and grant comforts, here the poet does not seek escape from misfortune. He prays instead for inner strength, fearlessness and self-reliance to face difficulties himself. He does not want God to save him from calamities or to lighten his burden of grief; he only wishes never to feel afraid, to be able to conquer his sorrows, and to carry his own burden with patience. Even if he finds no helper, his courage and manliness should not waver, and even in loss he should retain humility. In happy days he wants to remember God in every moment, and in the dark night of suffering—when the whole world deceives him—he prays that his faith in God should never weaken. Thus the poem celebrates courage, self-confidence, devotion and unshakeable faith.
💡 Central Idea

🧭 Message & Title

The poem conveys the message that we should not run away from difficulties or expect others to solve our problems. Instead, we must develop courage, self-confidence and inner strength to face the challenges of life on our own. We should ask God for the power to fight, not for the absence of the fight, and must keep our faith in Him steady through both good and bad times.
Read in English
The title 'Aatmtraan' means 'self-defence' or 'self-deliverance'—saving oneself by one's own strength. It is perfectly apt because throughout the poem the poet does not ask God to defend or rescue him; he prays for the courage and power to protect and deliver himself. The whole poem is about relying on one's own inner force to overcome troubles, so 'Aatmtraan' captures its essence completely.

In 'Aatmtraan' Rabindranath Tagore offers a prayer that is strikingly different from the usual. A common worshipper begs God to keep troubles away and shower comforts, but Tagore does the opposite. He clearly says that he does not pray to be saved from calamities; his only wish is that he should never feel afraid when misfortune strikes. He does not even ask for consolation for his grieving heart—he asks instead for the power to conquer his sorrows. If he finds no helper anywhere, he wants his own courage and manliness to remain firm; if he suffers loss, he wishes to keep humility within himself. He does not want God to rescue him daily or to lighten his burden; he prays only for the strength to swim across the ocean of troubles himself and to carry his own burden. Finally, he wishes to remember God in happiness and, even on the dark night of sorrow when the whole world deceives him, never to doubt God. Thus the entire poem is a prayer for inner strength, fearlessness, self-reliance and unshakeable faith—truly a prayer of 'self-deliverance' rather than of protection.
