It was the rainy season in the mountainous region, and Nature was changing her attire moment by moment. The vast, girdle-shaped mountains, opening up their thousand flower-like eyes (the countless blossoms on their slopes), were repeatedly gazing at their own immense reflection in the water below. At the feet of these mountains lay a nurtured lake, spread out wide and broad like a mirror.

Singing the glory of the mountain with a 'jhar-jhar' sound and exciting every vein with intoxication, the foaming waterfalls cascade down, beautiful like strings of pearls. Rising up and up from the heart (chest) of the great mountain, the lofty trees, as though filled with high aspirations, are peering at the silent sky - unblinking, motionless, and somewhat lost in thought.

Suddenly, look! The mountain seems to have flown away, having flapped the vast wings of the clouds. The waterfalls remain only as sound (hidden behind the mist). It is as if the sky has broken and fallen upon the earth. The frightened Shaal trees have sunk into the earth (hidden by fog/mist). Smoke seems to rise as if the lake itself has caught fire (mist rising from it). It was as though Indra, the king of gods, roaming about in his chariot of clouds, was playing a game of magic (illusion).

📝 Summary
In 'Parvat Pradesh Mein Paavas', Sumitranandan Pant paints a vivid picture of the ever-changing beauty of Nature during the rainy season in a mountainous region. He describes how the scenery transforms moment by moment. The vast, girdle-shaped mountains appear to gaze at their own reflection in a wide mirror-like lake at their feet, using their thousands of flowers as eyes. Sparkling waterfalls cascade down like strings of pearls, singing the glory of the mountains. Tall trees rise towards the silent sky as if filled with lofty aspirations, standing motionless and thoughtful. Then, suddenly, dense clouds and fog envelop everything - the mountains seem to fly away on the wings of clouds, the waterfalls are heard but not seen, frightened Shaal trees disappear into the mist, and vapour rises from the lake as if it were burning. The poet imagines that Indra, the king of the gods, is playing a magical game of illusion (Indrajaal) with his chariot of clouds. The poem celebrates the dynamic, magical and constantly shifting moods of Nature.

The title 'Parvat Pradesh Mein Paavas' (Rainy Season in the Mountain Region) is perfectly apt and self-explanatory. The entire poem is set in a mountainous region ('Parvat Pradesh') during the rainy season ('Paavas'). Every image - the reflecting mountains, the cascading waterfalls, the aspiring trees, and especially the sudden veil of fog and cloud - is a direct product of the monsoon in the hills. The title precisely captures both the setting and the season that together create the poem's ever-shifting natural drama, making it entirely justified.

In this poem, Pant beautifully captures how Nature changes her appearance moment by moment ('pal-pal parivartit prakriti-vesh') during the rainy season in the hills. In the first phase, the scene is calm and reflective: the girdle-shaped mountains, using their thousands of flower-eyes, gaze at their immense reflection in the mirror-like lake at their feet, while foaming waterfalls cascade down like strings of pearls, singing the mountain's glory. Tall trees rise towards the silent sky, motionless and thoughtful, as if filled with lofty aspirations. Then, suddenly, the mood transforms completely: dense clouds and fog descend, the mountains seem to fly away on the wings of clouds ('phadka apaar vaarid ke par'), the waterfalls are only heard and no longer seen, the frightened Shaal trees disappear into the mist, and vapour rises from the lake as though it were burning. The poet finally imagines this magical, dramatic transformation as Indra, the king of the gods, playing a game of illusion (Indrajaal) from his chariot of clouds. Through vivid imagery, personification and metaphor, Pant thus portrays Nature as a living, dynamic and constantly shifting spectacle - serene one moment and mysteriously dramatic the next.

Personification is the most striking device in this poem, as Pant consistently endows Nature with human qualities and emotions. The mountain is given thousands of 'eyes' in the form of flowers ('sahasra drig-suman'), with which it 'gazes' at its own reflection in the lake, as if admiring itself like a person before a mirror. The waterfalls 'sing' the glory of the mountain ('giri ka gaurav gaakar'), behaving like devoted singers intoxicated with joy. The tall trees are imagined as having 'lofty aspirations' ('uchchakanshayon se taruvar') and they 'peer' at the sky 'unblinking' and 'anxious', as if they were thoughtful human beings yearning for something beyond. Even the Shaal trees are 'frightened' ('sabhay shaal') and seem to sink into the earth. Finally, the entire fog-and-cloud spectacle is imagined as the god Indra playing magic from his cloud-chariot. The effect of this pervasive personification is to make Nature appear vibrant, alive and sentient - the reader does not merely see a landscape but feels its moods, desires and drama. It also deepens the emotional and philosophical layers of the poem, linking the trees' aspirations to the human soul's quest and turning a simple monsoon scene into a living, breathing world.
