Sparsh Prose

Overview

📖 Detailed Explanation

The story opens with the police inspector Ochumelov walking across the market square in a new overcoat, carrying a parcel, with a red-haired constable named Yeldyrin beside him holding a sieve full of confiscated gooseberries. The market square is quiet and almost empty; the open doors of the shops and taverns look out gloomily upon God's world, and there is not even a single beggar near them. Suddenly a noise breaks the silence.

A cry of 'So you bite, you damned brute?' is heard, and a dog comes running out of a timber-yard, limping on three legs and looking back. Behind it runs a man — the goldsmith Hryukin — in an unbuttoned waistcoat, who throws himself on the ground and catches the dog by its hind legs. The dog's whine and Hryukin's shout draw a crowd, which seems to spring up out of the earth. Inspector Ochumelov turns towards the gathering and goes up to investigate.

Hryukin shows his bleeding finger to the crowd and complains that the dog has bitten him while he was minding his own business; he demands compensation. Ochumelov, full of official authority, declares loudly that he will not tolerate such disorder, that he will teach a lesson to people who let their dogs run loose, and that the owner of this stray dog will be fined heavily. He sternly orders the constable to find out whose dog it is and to draw up a report. The dog, he announces, must be destroyed at once as it may be mad.

At this point someone in the crowd remarks that the dog perhaps belongs to General Zhigalov. The moment Ochumelov hears the general's name, his whole attitude changes. He suddenly feels hot, takes off his overcoat, and scolds Hryukin instead — saying how could such a small dog reach up and bite a tall man's finger; Hryukin must have scratched his finger with a nail and is now blaming the innocent dog to extract money. This is the first of Ochumelov's many turnabouts.

The constable then says he is not sure — the general does not keep such dogs; his are mostly hunting dogs. Hearing this, Ochumelov swings back again: he declares the dog is a stray, a worthless mongrel, and orders that it be put down. But just then someone else suggests it might indeed be the general's dog after all. Again Ochumelov feels cold, asks for his overcoat to be put back on, and softens towards the dog, calling it a fine, delicate little creature.

The general's cook, Prohor, happens to pass by, and the crowd calls him to settle the matter. Prohor confirms that the general never owned such a dog. Ochumelov, now bold again, prepares to condemn the dog — but Prohor adds that the dog belongs to the general's brother, who has just arrived in town. At once Ochumelov's face fills with emotion and delight; he gushes over the lovely little dog, and Prohor takes it away. The whole crowd laughs at Hryukin, who is left empty-handed. Threatening Hryukin that he will deal with him yet, Ochumelov wraps himself in his overcoat and continues across the market square.

Read in English

In a quiet market town, police inspector Ochumelov, walking with his constable, comes upon a commotion: a goldsmith named Hryukin claims a small dog has bitten his finger and demands punishment for the animal and its owner. Ochumelov begins with great authority, vowing to fine the careless owner and destroy the stray dog. But the moment a bystander says the dog may belong to General Zhigalov, the inspector reverses himself and blames Hryukin instead. As guesses about the dog's owner keep changing, Ochumelov changes his opinion again and again — siding with whoever seems more powerful — feeling alternately hot and cold and repeatedly putting on and taking off his overcoat. Finally the general's cook reveals the dog belongs to the general's brother, upon which Ochumelov fawns over the little dog, lets it be carried home, and threatens the injured Hryukin. The story is a sharp satire on the spinelessness, hypocrisy and toadyism of corrupt officials, who, like a chameleon, change colour to suit those in power.

💡 Central Idea

Read in English

The central idea of 'The Chameleon' is the exposure of opportunism and the lack of moral principle in officials who serve the law. Justice, in Ochumelov's hands, is not decided by truth or facts but by the social status of the dog's owner. The story shows how power and fear of the powerful corrupt the administration, turning a guardian of law into a fawning, colour-changing chameleon.

🎯 Themes

    Read in English

Opportunism and toadyism: Ochumelov has no fixed principle; his decisions bend entirely according to the power and rank of the dog's supposed owner, illustrating how self-interest replaces justice.

    Read in English

Corruption and injustice in administration: The story satirises a system where law is enforced not on the basis of right and wrong but according to the influence of those involved, so the common man like Hryukin gets no justice.

    Read in English

Hollow show of power and class divide: Both Ochumelov, who bullies the weak and flatters the strong, and the idle crowd that enjoys the spectacle reflect a society obsessed with rank, where the powerful are above accountability.

    Read in English

Hypocrisy versus truth: The constantly shifting verdict shows how hypocrisy and fear suppress simple truth — whether the dog actually bit Hryukin becomes irrelevant before the question of who owns it.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Read in English

The story warns that those entrusted with upholding justice must act on truth and principle, not on fear or favour of the powerful. A society where officials change their stand like a chameleon to please the mighty breeds injustice for the common man. We should value honesty, integrity and equal justice, and reject opportunism and flattery.

Justification of the Title

Read in English

The title 'The Chameleon' (Girgit) is highly apt and symbolic. A chameleon changes its colour to blend with its surroundings; in the same way, inspector Ochumelov changes his opinion and behaviour again and again according to the social standing of the dog's owner. His repeated reversals — now harsh, now soft; now taking off the coat in heat, now putting it on in a chill — perfectly mirror a chameleon's colour-changing. No real chameleon appears in the story; the title is a metaphor for the opportunistic, principle-less character of the inspector. Hence the title is both meaningful and satirical.

🪄 Literary Devices

Symbolism / Metaphor (प्रतीक/रूपक) — “गिरगिट (the chameleon) standing for the colour-changing inspector”

Read in English

The chameleon symbolises Ochumelov's ever-changing, opportunistic nature; the title itself is a metaphor since no real chameleon appears.

Satire / Irony (व्यंग्य/विडंबना) — “A guardian of law who decides 'justice' by the owner's rank, not by facts”

Read in English

The whole story is biting satire on corrupt officialdom; it is deeply ironic that the man meant to deliver justice is the most unjust and cowardly figure.

Repetition / Motif (पुनरावृत्ति) — “Ochumelov repeatedly taking off and putting on his overcoat”

Read in English

The recurring overcoat action becomes a comic motif marking each reversal of opinion, intensifying the satire.

Dramatic / Realistic dialogue (नाटकीय एवं यथार्थपरक संवाद) — “The quick exchanges between Ochumelov, Hryukin and the crowd”

Read in English

Crisp, lifelike dialogue drives the story almost like a play, revealing character through speech rather than description.

Imagery (बिंब-योजना) — “The gloomy, deserted market square; the dog limping on three legs”

Read in English

Vivid visual details create the dull small-town atmosphere and make the scene immediate and convincing.

Characterisation through contrast (विरोधाभास द्वारा चरित्र-चित्रण) — “Ochumelov harsh to the weak Hryukin, fawning before the general's name”

Read in English

The sharp contrast in Ochumelov's tone towards the powerless and the powerful lays bare his hypocrisy.

👤 Character Sketches

Ochumelov (ओचुमेलॉव) – the police inspector

Read in English

Ochumelov is the central character and the 'chameleon' of the title. He is a corrupt, opportunistic and spineless police officer who has no fixed principles. He bullies the weak with a great show of authority but turns into a flatterer the moment power is involved. His opinion about the dog and about Hryukin changes five times, depending only on who is said to own the dog. His repeated taking off and putting on of his overcoat symbolises his shifting loyalties. He represents every self-serving official who serves power instead of justice.

Hryukin (ख्रियूकिन) – the goldsmith

Read in English

Hryukin is the goldsmith whose finger is bitten by the dog. He is a common man who first hopes to gain compensation by raising a fuss, but he too is cunning and ready to exploit the law for money. When the dog turns out to belong to a powerful family, he gets no justice and is humiliated and laughed at by the crowd. Through him the writer shows that ordinary people get no fair hearing before the powerful, though he is not wholly innocent himself.

Yeldyrin (येल्दीरीन) – the constable

Read in English

Yeldyrin is the red-haired constable who accompanies Ochumelov, carrying the sieve of confiscated gooseberries. He is an obedient subordinate who keeps offering guesses about the dog's owner. His remarks repeatedly trigger Ochumelov's reversals, showing how rumour and uncertainty shape the inspector's so-called justice.

Prohor (प्रोखोर) – the general's cook

Read in English

Prohor is General Zhigalov's cook who finally settles the question by revealing that the dog belongs to the general's brother. His arrival decides the outcome; the dog is taken home and Hryukin is left punished. Though a minor figure, he is the one whose word carries authority because he speaks for the powerful household.

Ochumelov is the central character and the living embodiment of the title 'Chameleon'. As a police inspector he is supposed to deliver justice on the basis of facts, but he has no firm principle of his own. When he first hears Hryukin's complaint, he roars with authority, threatening to fine the dog's owner and to destroy the stray. But the instant a bystander suggests the dog may belong to General Zhigalov, he turns soft towards the dog and harsh towards Hryukin, accusing him of lying. As guesses about the owner keep changing, his verdict swings five times, always favouring whoever seems more powerful. His repeated removing and wearing of the overcoat — feeling hot and then cold — symbolises his shifting loyalties and inner discomfort. In the end he fawns over the general's brother's dog and threatens the innocent victim. Thus Ochumelov stands for the corrupt, opportunistic, cowardly official who bows before power and crushes the weak — a true chameleon.

Q. What is the main message of the story 'The Chameleon', and how does Chekhov convey it through satire?

The main message of 'The Chameleon' is that justice and law lose all meaning when those who administer them act out of fear and favour rather than truth and principle. Chekhov conveys this through biting satire. Instead of preaching directly, he shows a single small incident — a dog-bite — and lets the inspector's behaviour expose the rot in the system. The humour lies in Ochumelov's five comic reversals and in the overcoat that goes off and on with each change of opinion. The very man appointed to protect the law becomes its biggest violator, ready to call the same dog 'a worthless stray' one moment and 'a fine little creature' the next, depending only on its owner's rank. The crowd's amusement and Hryukin's humiliation deepen the irony. Through this gentle yet cutting humour, Chekhov warns society against opportunism, toadyism and the abuse of power, urging that integrity and equal justice for all, weak or strong, must guide those who hold authority.
