About the author: Mahadevi Verma (1907-1987) was one of the four major pillars of the Chhayavad (Romantic) movement in modern Hindi poetry, along with Jaishankar Prasad, Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala' and Sumitranandan Pant. Born in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, she is often called the 'Modern Meera' for the devotional, mystic intensity of her verse and her songs of separation (viraha) and longing for the unseen Beloved (the Divine). Deeply influenced by Buddhism and Gandhian thought, she devoted herself to women's education and was the Principal of Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth. Her major works include 'Nihar', 'Rashmi', 'Neerja', 'Sandhyageet', 'Deepshikha' and the prose sketches 'Atit Ke Chalchitra' and 'Shrinkhala Ki Kadiyan'. She received the Jnanpith Award (1982), the Padma Bhushan and the Sahitya Akademi Award. Towards the end of the poem, Mahadevi Verma widens her personal devotion into a universal experience by showing that the whole of nature burns with the same longing for the Divine. She points to the countless lamps (stars) burning in the sky that shine on daily even though they are 'snehheen' — without oil, and by the double meaning, without receiving love. She says even the heart of the water-filled ocean burns within itself, and the cloud gathers carrying lightning, its own hidden fire. In this way the sky, the sea and the cloud — all of nature — are shown to be ablaze with the inner fire of love and yearning for God, just like the poet's own heart. The host of stars smiling in the sky becomes a sign of joyful, willing devotion. By drawing these vast natural images, the poet suggests that the desire to merge with the Supreme is not hers alone but a universal truth running through all of creation, which makes her devotion grander and more profound.
