Overview

📖 Detailed Explanation

The story is a folk-tale of the Nicobar islands. Long ago the people believed that the island of 'Little Andaman' and 'Car Nicobar' were once joined together as a single island. In the village of Pasa lived a brave, handsome and helpful young man named Tatara. He was loved and respected by everyone. People believed his power lay in his wooden sword, which he always kept tied at his waist, and that as long as he kept it apart from the body of any human its supernatural power remained intact. Tatara never used it except in dire need.

One evening, tired after a day's work, Tatara was strolling along the sea-shore at Lapati village. The setting sun, the waves and the cool sea breeze filled him with peace. Suddenly he heard a sweet, enchanting voice singing. Spellbound, he moved towards the song and saw a beautiful young girl singing absorbed in herself. He was completely captivated by her voice and beauty and, forgetting himself, asked her name and village. The girl, named Vamiro, was startled by a stranger speaking to her, stopped singing and asked instead who he was and why he had broken the custom by speaking to her.

Both stood facing each other in silence, lost in love, when Vamiro's mother arrived calling out. Seeing her daughter talking to a young man of another village, she scolded Vamiro and led her away angrily, because their custom forbade marriage outside one's own village. Vamiro went home but could not forget Tatara, and Tatara too returned home restless, the whole night passing in thoughts of Vamiro.

The next day Tatara again went to Lapati and waited eagerly for Vamiro. She came, but overcome with emotion could not speak; tears flowed from her eyes. Their meetings continued and their love deepened. Soon news of their love spread through both villages. The people of Vamiro's village strongly opposed it because it went against tradition. Vamiro's mother humiliated Tatara harshly.

On the day of the village's traditional festival in Pasa, a grand celebration with food, dance and song took place. Vamiro and her mother also came. Tatara searched for Vamiro and finally found her, but on seeing him she began to weep. Just then her mother arrived and started insulting Tatara loudly before the whole crowd, taunting him for daring to love a girl of another village. Tatara, normally calm and gentle, was filled with helpless rage and grief at this public humiliation, yet remained silent out of love for Vamiro and respect for the elders.

Unable to bear the insult any longer, in a fit of fury Tatara seized his wooden sword and pulled it from his waist. In his uncontrollable anger he dug it into the earth and began dragging it along the ground with all his might. To everyone's horror a long crack appeared in the earth, and the land slowly began to split into two along the line of the sword. The part on which Tatara stood started drifting away into the sea, separating from the rest of the island.

Tatara was carried far away with the drifting land, while Vamiro stood helpless, screaming his name from the shore. He too kept looking at her until he disappeared from sight. Vamiro went mad with grief; for days she sat at the same spot, refusing food and water, weeping and calling out 'Tatara, Tatara'. One day she too disappeared and was never seen again. The people believed that the splitting of the island this way separated Little Andaman from Car Nicobar. Through the painful sacrifice of Tatara and Vamiro, the islanders learnt the cruelty of their rigid custom and gradually gave up the practice of forbidding marriage outside one's village. Their love-story is still sung and remembered with reverence in the Nicobar islands.

📝 Summary

'Tatara-Vamiro Katha' is a popular Nicobari folk-tale retold by Leeladhar Mandloi. It explains, through a love-story, why Little Andaman and Car Nicobar are two separate islands. Tatara, a brave and helpful young man of Pasa village, falls in love at first sight with Vamiro, a beautiful singing girl of Lapati village. But the custom of the islands forbade marriage outside one's own village, so their love is fiercely opposed, especially by Vamiro's mother. At a village festival Vamiro's mother publicly insults Tatara. Overcome with grief and helpless rage, Tatara draws his powerful wooden sword and drags it through the earth, splitting the land in two. He is carried away by the drifting half of the island and is lost forever; Vamiro, broken-hearted, also disappears. Their tragic sacrifice makes the islanders realise the cruelty of their rigid tradition, and they gradually abandon it. The story thus blends a tender love-tale with a social message against meaningless customs.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of the story is that rigid, meaningless social customs that come in the way of human love and feeling are cruel and harmful, and society must have the courage to change them. The supreme sacrifice of Tatara and Vamiro for their pure love finally awakens the islanders and frees them from the inhuman tradition of not marrying outside one's village.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The story conveys that customs and traditions are made for the welfare of people, not for their torment. When a tradition becomes cruel, unjust and an obstacle to genuine love and human happiness, society must abandon it. Love is pure and noble, and no man-made rule should be allowed to destroy it. The reform should ideally come through understanding and not demand the sacrifice of innocent lives.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Tatara-Vamiro Katha' is fully appropriate, for the whole story revolves around these two central characters and their love. 'Katha' (tale) signals that it is a folk-story handed down through generations. The names of the hero and heroine in the title at once tell the reader that this is the legend of their love and sacrifice, which also explains the separation of the islands. Thus the title is brief, suggestive and perfectly suited to the subject.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Describe the love-story of Tatara and Vamiro and explain how it brought about social change.

Tatara, a noble young man of Pasa village, fell in love with Vamiro, a beautiful singing girl of Lapati village, when he heard her enchanting song on the sea-shore. They met again and again and their love deepened, though the custom of the islands forbade marriage outside one's village. Vamiro's mother strongly opposed the relationship and, at the village festival in Pasa, publicly insulted Tatara. Unable to bear the humiliation, Tatara in helpless fury drew his magical wooden sword and dragged it through the earth, splitting the island in two. He was carried away on the drifting half and lost forever, and the grief-stricken Vamiro also disappeared. This terrible sacrifice of two pure lovers shook the conscience of the islanders. They realised the cruelty and senselessness of a tradition that destroyed true love and innocent lives, and gradually they gave up the custom of forbidding marriage outside one's village. Thus the tragic love-story became the cause of a humane social reform, and Tatara and Vamiro are remembered with reverence to this day.

Q. What message does the story 'Tatara-Vamiro Katha' give regarding customs and traditions? Discuss with reference to today's society.

The story teaches that customs and traditions exist for the welfare and happiness of people, not for their suffering. The cruel custom forbidding marriage outside one's village stood in the way of true love and finally destroyed two innocent lives. The story warns that any tradition which becomes inhuman, unjust or an obstacle to genuine love and happiness must be changed. Even today many rigid customs based on caste, religion, region or status crush human feelings and cause needless misery. The tale urges us to judge every tradition by reason and humanity, and to have the courage to discard those that are senseless and harmful, so that no one has to make the kind of tragic sacrifice that Tatara and Vamiro made.
