Overview

About the author: Bihari (Bihari Lal) is regarded as one of the greatest poets of the Riti-kaal (the 'mannerist' period) of Hindi literature. He was born around 1595 in Basua (Govindpur) near Gwalior and spent much of his life in the court of Raja Jai Singh of Amber (Jaipur). He is famous for a single work, the 'Bihari Satsai', a collection of about 700 dohas (couplets). His poetry is celebrated for its extraordinary brevity and density of meaning — it is said that in his tiny couplets he could compress the meaning of a whole epic, which led to the famous saying that his 'small' dohas carry a 'deep' load. He wrote chiefly on shringar (love and beauty), bhakti (devotion) and niti (moral wisdom), in a refined Brajbhasha. He died around 1663.
📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
The dark, beautiful (saanwle) body of Shri Krishna looks splendid wrapped in a yellow garment (peetambar). It seems as if the first soft rays of the morning sun have fallen upon a mountain made of sapphire (blue gem).

Because of the long, fierce heat of the summer, the whole world has become like a hermitage (tapovan). In this great heat, natural enemies — the snake and the peacock, the deer and the tiger — are said to be living together at one place, forgetting their enmity.

The gopi has hidden Krishna's flute out of a longing for the sweet pleasure of conversation (batras) with him. When Krishna asks for it back, she swears (an oath) that she has not taken it, yet she laughs with her eyebrows; she keeps saying she will give it, and then refuses (turns away).

The heroine (nayika) is so overcome by separation that she can neither write her message on paper nor speak it aloud out of shyness. So she tells her messenger: O beloved, your own heart will tell you all that is in my heart — for both hearts feel the same pangs of love.

Mere outward shows of religion — the rosary (japmala), the sect-marks branded on the body, and the tilak on the forehead — do not accomplish a single real task. With a fickle, hypocritical mind one dances about in vain; God (Rama) is pleased and attained only by a true, sincere heart.

O wise Radhika, listen — I would sacrifice even an apsara like Urvashi upon you! For you, having become like an 'urvasi' (a beautiful ornament worn on the breast), have come to dwell forever in the heart of Mohan (Krishna). The poet plays on the word 'urbasi' meaning both the apsara Urvashi and a breast-ornament / 'one who dwells in the heart'.

📝 Summary
This lesson is a selection of seven dohas (couplets) by the great Riti-kaal poet Bihari, taken from his only work, the 'Bihari Satsai'. Though tiny in size, each doha is dense with meaning. The first couplet describes the beauty of dark-bodied Krishna wrapped in a yellow robe, comparing him to a sapphire mountain lit by the morning sun. The second shows how the fierce summer heat turns the world into a forest of penance where even natural enemies live together peacefully. The next two couplets depict shringar (love): a playful gopi hides Krishna's flute to enjoy talking with him, and a love-sick heroine, unable to write or speak her message out of shyness, says her beloved's own heart will read hers. The fifth and sixth couplets carry bhakti and niti: the poet prays to Keshav to remove his sufferings, and condemns hollow religious display (rosary, tilak, sect-marks), insisting that God is won only by a sincere heart. The last couplet uses a clever pun on 'urbasi' to praise Radha, who dwells permanently in Krishna's heart. Together the dohas display Bihari's mastery of love, devotion and moral wisdom in the smallest possible space.

💡 Central Idea
Through seven compact couplets, Bihari demonstrates the art of saying much in little. He weaves together shringar (the beauty of Krishna and the play of love), bhakti (heartfelt prayer to God) and niti (the truth that real devotion lies in a sincere heart, not in outward ritual), proving that small words can carry deep meaning.

🧭 Message & Title
True devotion and true love come from the heart, not from outward show. Just as Bihari packs deep meaning into the smallest words, sincerity and inner feeling — not ritual, display or many words — are what truly matter and please God.

The title 'Dohe' (Couplets) is apt because the lesson is simply a chosen group of dohas — a two-line metrical form — by Bihari. The plain title fits the form, and at the same time the very brevity of the doha embodies the chapter's spirit: small in size, deep in meaning ('gagar mein sagar').

Bihari's poetry is celebrated for its brevity and depth — in just two lines he compresses what others might say in pages, which is why it is said his dohas are like a marksman's arrows: small to look at but striking deep. In these couplets we see this clearly. In a single line he paints the whole picture of dark Krishna in a yellow robe as a sapphire mountain lit by dawn (shringar and beauty). In one couplet he conveys an entire summer scene where the heat unites natural enemies (vivid imagery and hyperbole). The gopi hiding the flute compresses a whole drama of teasing love into four short phrases. The love-sick heroine who says 'your heart will tell you mine' captures the depth of viraha in a single image. The niti doha demolishes empty ritualism in two lines, and the 'urbasi' couplet packs a pun, praise and the idea of Radha living in Krishna's heart together. Thus, through compact language, clever figures of speech (utpreksha, shlesh, anupras), and refined Brajbhasha, Bihari truly fills a small pot with an ocean of meaning.

Though Bihari is mainly a poet of shringar, the prescribed selection shows his range across all three streams. The shringar dohas celebrate beauty and love: the radiant image of Krishna as a sapphire mountain, the gopi who hides the flute to enjoy conversation, the shy love-sick heroine whose heart speaks to her beloved's, and the praise of Radha through the 'urbasi' pun. The bhakti spirit appears when the poet prays to Keshav, who took birth in the Yadu dynasty and dwells in Braj, to remove all his sufferings — showing surrender and faith in God's grace. The niti element comes through sharply in the doha rejecting rosary, tilak and sect-marks; here Bihari teaches that outward religious display is useless and that God is won only by a sincere heart. By placing love, devotion and ethical wisdom side by side, Bihari proves that he is not merely a court poet of romance but a complete poet whose tiny couplets touch beauty, the divine and human conduct alike.
