These poor people are so deprived that if they have no shirt, they will fold up their legs to cover their bellies. 📝 Summary
Dushyant Kumar's 'Ghazal' is a sharp social and political protest expressed through the delicate ghazal form. The poet exposes the huge gap between the grand promises made to the common people and the harsh reality of their lives. Once it was promised that every home would glow with lamps, but now not even one lamp is available for the whole city. The places meant to give shelter — like the shade of trees — now burn like the sun. The poor are so deprived and so used to adjusting that they will cover their bellies with their legs if they have no shirt, and the poet calls them, with bitter irony, 'suitable' for life's harsh journey. Even if faith in God falters, the poet wishes to keep alive the dream of a dignified human being and a just world. The complacent rulers believe the 'stone' of the unjust system can never melt, but the poet is restless to give his voice the power to bring change. Finally, he sarcastically tells the ruler to stitch up the poet's mouth — a precaution needed to suppress the rising tide of public anger. The ghazal is thus a powerful cry of the common man against injustice, hunger and corruption, and an unbreakable expression of hope and rebellion.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the ghazal is the painful contrast between the lofty promises of progress and equality made to the common people and the bitter reality of their poverty, hunger and helplessness. It is a strong protest against social injustice and political corruption, yet it also keeps alive the dream of a just, humane society and the rebellious hope that the people's voice will one day melt the 'stone' of an oppressive system.

🧭 Message & Title
The poem gives the message that we must not be deceived by hollow promises, nor remain silent spectators to injustice, poverty and corruption. We should raise our voice fearlessly against an oppressive system and keep alive the hope and effort for a more humane, equal and just society. The collective voice of the people has the power to change even the hardest, stone-like injustice.

The title 'Ghazal' is apt because the poem is written in the traditional Urdu-Persian ghazal form, with its characteristic couplets (sher), refrain (radif) 'ke liye' and rhyme (kaafiya). However, Dushyant Kumar transforms the ghazal, which traditionally sang of love and beauty, into a vehicle of social and political protest. Each couplet stands independently yet together they voice the pain and rebellion of the common man. The title thus honours the form while signalling its bold new content.

🪄 Literary Devices
Symbolism is used throughout: the 'lamp/illumination' symbolises prosperity and hope, while 'stone' (patthar) symbolises the hard, unfeeling, unjust system that the rulers think can never change.

Bitter irony pervades the poem — calling helpless, starving people 'suitable' for the journey, and sarcastically inviting the ruler to stitch up the poet's mouth, sharply exposing injustice and oppression.

Metaphor deepens the meaning — 'sun in the shade of trees' stands for suffering where comfort was expected, and the 'melting of stone' stands for the transformation of a rigid system.

The sharp contrast between what was promised (lamps for every home) and what exists (no lamp for the whole city) heightens the sense of betrayal and injustice.

The poem follows the ghazal structure: the recurring refrain 'ke liye' (radif) ends each couplet's second line, and the rhyming words before it (ghar, shahar, bhar, safar, nazar, asar, bahar) form the kaafiya, giving the ghazal its musical unity.

The unjust system is personified as a 'stone' that can melt or refuse to melt, lending the abstract idea of social change a vivid, living quality.

Dushyant Kumar turns the delicate ghazal into a weapon of protest. The opening couplet contrasts the promise of lamps for every home with the reality of not a single lamp for the whole city, exposing the hollowness of political promises. The image of feeling the sun even in the shade of trees shows that the very institutions meant to protect people now torment them. The third couplet, with bitter irony, paints the deprivation of the poor who cover their bellies with their legs, calling them 'suitable' for life's harsh journey. Yet the poet does not sink into despair: even if faith in God falters, he keeps alive the dream of a dignified human being and a just world. He contrasts the complacency of rulers who think the 'stone' of the system can never melt with his own restlessness to make his voice powerful enough to change it. The final couplet, addressing the ruler to 'stitch up the poet's mouth', is a sharp sarcasm that itself proves the strength of the people's rising voice. Thus the ghazal becomes a powerful expression of the common man's suffering, his protest against corruption and oppression, and his unbreakable hope for change.

In form, Dushyant Kumar's poem fully follows the ghazal tradition — independent couplets (sher), a recurring refrain (radif) 'ke liye', and rhyming kaafiya words like ghar, shahar, safar, nazar, asar and bahar, giving it musical unity. But in content it is strikingly different. The traditional ghazal sang mostly of love, beauty, separation and wine. Dushyant Kumar fills this delicate form with the harsh realities of society — poverty, hunger, broken promises, corruption and the suppression of voices. His language is simple and direct, drawn from everyday life, so that the common reader can grasp it instantly. Each couplet becomes a slogan of protest and a cry for justice. By marrying the graceful classical form with bold, rebellious social content, he created a new tradition of the 'Hindi ghazal' as a literature of resistance, making it the voice of the common man rather than of the lover alone.
