Overview

About the author: Meerabai (c. 1498–1546) is one of the most celebrated saint-poets of the Bhakti movement. Born into the Rathore royal family of Merta in Rajasthan, she was married to Bhojraj, the crown prince of Mewar. From childhood she regarded Lord Krishna (Giridhar Gopal) as her husband and Lord. Widowed early, she renounced palace life and devoted herself wholly to the worship of Krishna, wandering as a mendicant and singing his praises. Her in-laws, especially Rana Vikramaditya, are believed to have tried to harm her with a cup of poison and a bed of nails, but she remained unharmed and steadfast in devotion. Her poetry, composed mainly in Rajasthani-mixed Braj, expresses 'madhurya bhakti' (sweet, intimate love-devotion) and complete surrender to Krishna. Her padas are still sung across India.

My only one is Giridhar Gopal (Krishna), there is none other for me. He who wears the crown of peacock feathers on his head, he alone is my husband. Father, mother, brother, kinsmen — none of them is truly mine. I have abandoned the false honour and conventions of the family — let people say what they may. Sitting beside the saints again and again, I have lost all care for worldly shame. I tore my fine veil into pieces and wrapped myself in a coarse blanket instead. Taking off my pearls and corals, I strung a garland of wild forest flowers. Watering it again and again with the tears of my eyes, I sowed the creeper of love (devotion). Now that creeper has spread and borne the fruit of bliss. I churned the pot of milk with great love; and when I had taken out the butter (the essence — pure devotion), let the rest of the world drink the buttermilk (the worthless residue). Seeing true devotion I rejoice, but looking at the worldly people I weep. Meera, the maidservant of her beloved Giridhar, prays: now redeem me, set me free. My only one is Giridhar Gopal, there is none other for me.

📝 Summary
In this celebrated pada, Meerabai declares her single-minded, exclusive devotion to Lord Krishna, whom she calls Giridhar Gopal and accepts as her only husband and protector. She renounces all worldly relationships — father, mother, brother and kinsmen — and casts off family honour and the fear of social shame. To live as a devotee she abandons her royal silks and jewels, tearing her fine veil and wearing a coarse blanket, replacing her pearls and corals with a garland of forest flowers. She describes her devotion through two beautiful images: she has sown a creeper of love watered by her tears that has now blossomed into the fruit of bliss; and she has churned the milk of devotion and taken out the butter (the precious essence) while the world keeps only the buttermilk (the worthless residue). She rejoices at true devotion and weeps at a world lost in illusion. Finally, as the humble maidservant of Giridhar, she begs Krishna to redeem and liberate her.

The title 'Mere To Girdhar Gopal' (My only one is Giridhar Gopal) is taken from the very first line and captures the heart of the entire pada. 'Giridhar Gopal' — the cowherd who lifted Mount Govardhan — is Krishna, whom Meera accepts as her sole husband, family and refuge. The word 'to' (only) underlines the exclusive nature of her devotion: there is no one and nothing else for her. Thus the title perfectly expresses the central emotion of single-minded, all-renouncing love that runs through every line.

🪄 Literary Devices

The butter symbolises the precious essence of true devotion which Meera has gained, while the buttermilk symbolises the worthless, illusory worldly life left for others.

Meerabai's devotion in this pada is of the madhurya (sweet, intimate love) kind and is marked by complete exclusivity. She accepts Krishna alone as her husband, family and refuge, declaring 'there is none other for me'. Her devotion is fearless and renunciatory — she casts off family honour, social shame, royal silks and precious jewels, choosing a coarse blanket and a garland of forest flowers, and sits openly among saints. It is intensely emotional, watered by tears, yet it bears the 'fruit of bliss', showing that her surrender brings true joy. She distinguishes the precious 'butter' of devotion from the worthless 'buttermilk' of worldly life, rejoicing at devotion and weeping at the illusion-bound world.
Meera draws a sharp contrast between the spiritual and the worldly through vivid imagery drawn from everyday rural life. First, she presents devotion as a 'creeper of love' (prem-beli) which she sowed and watered with her own tears; though born of suffering, it has spread and borne the 'fruit of bliss' (anand-phal), suggesting that the path of devotion, though hard, yields lasting joy. Second, she uses the homely image of churning milk: she has churned with great love and taken out the butter — the precious essence of true devotion — leaving only the buttermilk, the worthless residue, for the worldly people. This image powerfully conveys that the devotee gains the real treasure while the world clings to what is hollow. Her renunciation of silks, pearls and corals in favour of a coarse blanket and forest-flower garland further dramatises this contrast. The closing line 'rejoicing at devotion, weeping at the world' sums up the opposition: spiritual life brings bliss and freedom, worldly life only emptiness and bondage. The simple, concrete images make her profound spiritual message clear and moving.
