About the author: Akka Mahadevi (Akkamahadevi) was a great saint-poet of the 12th century from Karnataka and a leading figure of the Veerashaiva (Lingayat) Bhakti movement. She composed her devotional poems, called 'Vachanas', in the Kannada language. Renouncing worldly comforts, she devoted her entire life to her chosen deity, Lord Shiva, whom she addressed lovingly as 'Chennamallikarjuna'. Her vachanas express intense devotion, fearless self-surrender and a longing to merge with the Divine. In this poem, presented in Hindi translation in the Aroh textbook, she addresses worldly cravings such as hunger, thirst, sleep, anger and desire, asking them not to torment her and disturb her devotion. Her poetry combines deep spirituality with the simple, direct language of ordinary experience.

In this vachana, the saint-poet Akka Mahadevi prays to her worldly cravings and passions to stop tormenting her so that she can devote herself fully to her Lord, Chennamallikarjuna (Shiva). One by one she addresses hunger, thirst, sleep, anger, attachment, greed, lust, jealousy and other base instincts, asking each of them not to disturb the peace of her mind or obstruct her devotion. These passions constantly pull a human being towards worldly life and away from God. The poet does not claim that she has conquered them by her own strength; instead, with deep humility, she surrenders herself completely to her Lord and asks Him to subdue these cravings on her behalf and to keep her forever at His feet. The poem thus expresses the Bhakti ideal of self-surrender (sharanagati) and the longing to be free from worldly desires in order to attain union with the Divine.

🧭 Message & Title

The poem teaches that human cravings — hunger, anger, greed, lust, jealousy and the like — never allow the mind to rest, and uncontrolled they ruin both worldly and spiritual life. To rise above them one needs not arrogance but humility, surrender and unwavering faith in God. By placing oneself wholly in the Lord's hands, one can be freed from the restlessness of desire and find lasting peace.

The title 'He Bhookh! Mat Machal' (O Hunger! Do Not Torment Me) is drawn from the very first line of the poem, where the poet addresses hunger — the most basic of all bodily cravings — and asks it not to be restless and trouble her. Hunger here stands as a symbol for all worldly desires and passions that distract a devotee from God. By naming the poem after this opening cry, the title at once captures the central tension of the work: the soul's struggle against the relentless demands of the body. It is therefore apt, suggestive and faithful to the spirit of the vachana.

The poem is a perfect expression of the Bhakti ideal of 'sharanagati' or total self-surrender. Akka Mahadevi, a Veerashaiva saint devoted to Lord Shiva (Chennamallikarjuna), recognises that the greatest obstacles in a devotee's path are not external enemies but the inner passions — hunger, thirst, sleep, anger, attachment, greed, lust and jealousy. She personifies each of these and addresses them directly, pleading with them one by one to stop tormenting her and disturbing the peace of her mind. Significantly, she does not boast of conquering them by her own willpower; such pride would itself be a hindrance. Instead, with profound humility she turns to her Lord and entrusts the entire task to Him, asking Him to subdue these cravings and keep her, His surrendered devotee, forever at His feet. This shift — from struggling against desires to surrendering before God — is the heart of Bhakti philosophy, where the devotee acknowledges human helplessness and relies wholly on divine grace. The poet thus treats worldly desires not as things to be proudly defeated but as forces to be transcended through love, devotion and complete reliance on God, making the poem a moving testament to the spiritual aspiration to merge with the Divine.

The central idea of the poem is that the base instincts and cravings within a human being — hunger, thirst, anger, greed, lust, jealousy and the like — are the chief enemies of inner peace and spiritual progress, and that they can be overcome only through humility, devotion and surrender to God. Akka Mahadevi shows that these passions keep the mind restless and constantly pull a person towards materialism, away from higher goals. Rather than claiming victory over them through personal effort, she surrenders to Lord Chennamallikarjuna and seeks His grace. This idea is deeply relevant even today. In modern life people are driven by endless desires — for wealth, power, pleasure and recognition — which leave them perpetually dissatisfied and disturbed. The poem reminds us that true and lasting peace cannot be found by feeding these cravings but only by mastering them through self-control, humility and faith in a higher power. It teaches that recognising one's limitations and surrendering one's ego is itself a form of strength, and that a balanced, contented and spiritually focused life is the real goal of human existence.
