Overview

About the author: Kabir (c. 1398–1518) is one of the greatest saint-poets of the Nirgun Bhakti tradition in Hindi literature. According to legend he was born to a Brahmin widow and raised by a Muslim weaver couple, Niru and Nima, in Kashi (Varanasi). He earned his living by weaving cloth and is believed to have been a disciple of the saint Ramananda. Living amid both Hindu and Muslim communities, Kabir was uniquely placed to attack the hollow rituals, idol-worship, caste pride and outward religiosity of both faiths. His poetry is in a mixed, rustic 'sadhukkadi' language and survives mainly in three forms — Sakhi, Sabad and Ramaini — collected in the 'Bijak'. He was an iconoclast and a champion of a formless (nirgun) God, oneness of all beings, inner devotion and the guru's grace. His couplets and pads are celebrated for their fearless honesty, biting satire and deep spiritual insight.
📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
I have come to know the One and only One (God). Those who speak of two—that there are differences (between Hindu and Muslim, soul and the Supreme)—are themselves in hell, for they have not truly recognised the Truth.

The same air, the same water flows in all; the same light (of the soul) shines equally in everyone. From the same clay all the pots (bodies) are moulded, and the same potter (God) has kneaded that clay.

Just as a carpenter cuts only the wood but cannot cut the fire latent within it, in the same way You (the divine spirit) pervade every body. The same Supreme Being assumes all these different forms.

Seeing the illusion (maya) the whole world is beguiled—O man, why are you so proud of this fleeting wealth and body? Says the God-intoxicated Kabir: one who has become fearless (by realising the One) is touched by nothing—neither pride, nor delusion, nor the fear of death.

📝 Summary
In this 'pad' (devotional song) Kabir proclaims the central truth of his nirgun bhakti—that God is One, formless and present in all creation. He declares that he has realised this oneness, while those who see duality and difference are spiritually lost, as if in hell. To prove the unity of all life he gives homely examples: the same air, the same water and the same divine light dwell in every being; all bodies are pots fashioned from a single lump of clay by one potter—God. Like the fire hidden in wood that no carpenter's saw can cut, the eternal spirit pervades every body and cannot be destroyed; the one God merely takes many forms. Finally Kabir warns humanity against pride born of maya (worldly illusion) and wealth, and declares that the one who recognises this One becomes utterly fearless—untouched by attachment, ego or the fear of death. The poem thus rejects ritualism and religious division and upholds inner realisation of a single, all-pervading reality.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the poem is the oneness of God and the unity of all creation. Kabir asserts that a single, formless divine power dwells in every being; therefore distinctions of religion, caste and 'self vs. other' are false. True knowledge lies in recognising this One, and such recognition makes a person fearless and free from pride and delusion.

The title 'Hum Tau Ek Ek Kari Jaanaa' literally means 'I have known the One as One'—that is, I have realised that God and the entire creation are essentially one and undivided. The title is apt because the whole pad is built around this single declaration: through the images of common air, water, light, clay and the fire within wood, Kabir proves that one indivisible reality runs through all. Thus the opening line itself captures the poem's core message, making the title perfectly suitable.

Kabir builds the idea of unity step by step through everyday imagery drawn from common experience. He first declares that he has realised the One, and that those who see duality are lost in hell. To prove this oneness he points out that the same air and water sustain all beings and the same divine light shines equally in everyone, so no being is higher or lower. He then uses the powerful metaphor of the potter and pots: just as countless pots are shaped from a single lump of clay by one potter, all bodies are fashioned from the same substance by one God. The image of fire hidden in wood shows that though the body (wood) can be cut or destroyed, the soul (fire) within is indestructible and one. Through these homely symbols—air, water, light, clay, pots, fire—Kabir makes the abstract advaita truth concrete and convincing, establishing that a single, formless, all-pervading reality runs through the whole of creation and that all apparent differences of religion and caste are illusory.

This pad is a clear mirror of Kabir's nirgun, anti-ritualistic and humanistic thought. By insisting that God is one and formless and dwells equally in every being, Kabir strikes at the root of communal hatred and caste hierarchy. The phrase about those who speak of 'two' being in hell is a direct attack on people who divide humanity in the name of Hindu and Muslim or high and low. His images of common air, water, light and clay assert the absolute equality of all human beings—a revolutionary idea in his caste-ridden age. In the last stanza he warns against the pride that arises from maya (worldly wealth and the body), calling such arrogance foolish, and declares that one who realises the One becomes fearless, untouched by ego, attachment and the fear of death. The message to society is timeless: give up religious bigotry, casteism and false pride, recognise the one divine reality present in all, and cultivate brotherhood, humility and inner fearlessness. In an age of communal tension and social inequality, Kabir's call for unity and equality remains deeply relevant.
