About the author: Sumitranandan Pant (1900-1977) was one of the four great pillars of the Chhayavad (Romantic) movement in Hindi poetry, along with Jaishankar Prasad, Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala' and Mahadevi Verma. Born in Kausani village in the Almora district of Uttarakhand (then United Provinces), he grew up amid the lap of the Himalayas, and the beauty of nature deeply coloured his sensibility. Initially a poet of nature and beauty, he later turned towards progressivism (pragativad) and humanism, raising his voice for the oppressed, the poor and the exploited farmer and labourer. His major works include 'Veena', 'Pallav', 'Gunjan', 'Yugant', 'Gramya' and 'Chidambara', for which he was awarded the Jnanpith Award. He also received the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan. The poem 'Ve Aankhen' reflects his progressive phase, where he portrays the cruel exploitation and ruin of the Indian peasant.

Those eyes — they are like the deep cave of darkness, sunk for so long in the darkness of some helplessness. So many monsoons and so many springs have scorched and dried up within them. How many times have tears welled up in them as a plea; and in them, helplessly, the very rebellion of humankind was inevitably nurtured.

📝 Summary
'Ve Aankhen' is a moving progressive poem by Sumitranandan Pant that depicts the cruel exploitation and total ruin of an Indian peasant under the oppressive rule of moneylenders and landlords. The poem centres on the eyes of an old farmer — eyes that have sunk into the darkness of helplessness, having seen every joy and sorrow scorched and dried within them. Before these eyes, his swaying crop was washed away in a flood, his bullocks died under the yoke, and his children withered from constant starvation. The fields he ploughed slipped from his hands; the produce of the moneylender's land led to the attachment of his wife's belongings. His wife's only gold ornament, the symbol of her wifehood, went towards interest. His daughter became the victim of the landlord's lust and died of consumption; his sick son died without medicine; and his wife, unable to bear the hunger, sobbed herself to death. Now only the lonely, broken old man remains — emptied of family, turned away by the world, despised by men, neglected by nature — forced to watch the dreadful, naked dance of the exploitative moneylender-system before his very eyes.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the poem is to expose, through the suffering eyes of one old farmer, the cruel exploitation of the entire Indian peasantry by the capitalist moneylender-landlord system. Pant shows how nature's calamities and man-made injustice together crush the poor farmer, robbing him of his crops, cattle, land, honour and family, until he is left utterly alone — a helpless witness to the savage 'tandava' of an inhuman social order.

🎯 Themes
Exploitation of the Indian farmer: The poem's foremost theme is the relentless economic and social exploitation of the peasant by moneylenders and landlords, who drain him of crops, land, ornaments and dignity through debt, interest and attachment of property.

Loneliness and total ruin: The final theme is the absolute isolation of the old farmer who, having lost his entire family, land and even his bullocks, survives only to witness his own and society's ruin — empty of kin, abandoned by the world, men and nature alike.

The title 'Ve Aankhen' (Those Eyes) is highly appropriate and symbolic. Throughout the poem, the eyes of the old farmer become the lens through which the entire tragedy unfolds — they have 'seen' the crop wash away, the bullocks die, the children starve, the daughter dishonoured and dead, the wife and son perish. These eyes, sunk in the darkness of helplessness, are the living witness and the very embodiment of the peasant's suffering and the cruelty of the moneylender-system. By naming the poem after these eyes, Pant focuses the reader's attention on the silent, tearful witness of exploitation, making the title both literal and deeply symbolic of the pain of the whole oppressed class.

Sumitranandan Pant's 'Ve Aankhen' is a powerful progressive poem of social protest that lays bare the brutal exploitation of the Indian peasant by the capitalist moneylender-landlord system. Through the suffering eyes of one old farmer, the poet portrays the tragedy of the entire peasant class. Natural calamities first strike him — his swaying crop is washed away in a flood and his bullocks die under the yoke. But the greater cruelty is man-made: the produce of the moneylender's land leads to the attachment of his wife's belongings, her only gold ornament goes towards interest, and his fields slip from his hands. The exploitation is not merely economic but also moral and physical — his daughter is dishonoured by the landlord and dies of consumption, his son dies for want of medicine, and his wife dies of hunger. Stripped of family, land, cattle and dignity, the old man survives only to witness the 'naked tandava' of the moneylender-rule. Pant does not merely arouse pity; he indicts an inhuman social order and awakens the reader's conscience against injustice, demanding compassion and reform. Thus the poem stands as a stirring document of social protest and a call for justice for the oppressed.
