Kshitij Poem

Overview

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

Do not touch the shadow (of the past), O mind, for it will only double your sorrow. Once life was filled with bright, multicoloured memories; the earth seemed washed clean, glowing and lit up with flashes of light. But now the golden peaks of the mind's dreams have all turned to smoke, and the mind dwells in a dust-laden, pale sandalwood forest.

To live merely by the support of breath, is that truly living? Is running away from sorrow really life? Joys are few while sufferings are many; the paths of life are mostly dark, with only a little light upon them.

Forget whatever you could not attain, and instead embrace the future. Whatever has passed is gone forever. If there was a star (a beloved person or joy) in your life, granted it was extremely dear, yet if it has set, then it has set forever — there is no use grieving over it.

Those memories of the past — like the guardians of a tender splendour, like ever-beautiful and precious silver, like a colourful gallery of images — O mind, do not touch them. They are mere shadows; if you touch (cling to) them, your sorrow will only be doubled.

There are only a few moments of joy in life, but the light, drifting clouds too — which form again and again and give shade — provided at least a moment's rest. The life of happiness lasts but a moment; therefore, O mind, do not touch the shadow of the past.

'Chhaya Mat Chhoona' by Girijakumar Mathur is a deeply philosophical poem that teaches the art of living. The poet advises the human mind not to cling to the 'shadow' of the past — the memory of happy moments that are now gone — because dwelling on lost joys only doubles one's grief. He recalls that life once seemed full of bright, colourful memories, but those golden dreams have now turned to smoke and the present is dusty and pale. The poet questions whether merely breathing or running away from sorrow is real living. He points out that in life joys are few and sufferings many, the paths are dark with little light. His message is to forget what could not be attained, to accept that whatever has passed is gone, and to embrace the future courageously. Even a lost star, however dear, should not be mourned endlessly. Past memories may appear precious like silver and beautiful like a gallery of images, but they are only shadows. Just as drifting clouds give a moment's shade and rest, happiness too is momentary. Hence one must live in the present, face reality with patience, and stop chasing the illusions of the past.

💡 Central Idea

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Read in English

The poem conveys the message that one should not waste life mourning lost happiness or chasing the shadows of the past, for this only deepens sorrow. Instead, accepting both joy and pain as transient, we must live bravely in the present and walk steadfastly towards the future with courage and hope.

Justification of the Title

Read in English

The title 'Chhaya Mat Chhoona' (Do Not Touch the Shadow) is highly apt and symbolic. Here 'shadow' stands for the memory of past happiness — something that has no real existence in the present, just as a shadow is intangible. The repeated refrain 'do not touch the shadow' becomes the very soul of the poem, carrying its central message: clinging to bygone joys is like grasping at a shadow, which yields nothing but doubled sorrow. Thus the title perfectly captures the theme of not dwelling on the past and accepting life's reality.

Long Answer Questions
Q. What is the central message of the poem 'Chhaya Mat Chhoona'? Discuss how it teaches the art of living.

The central message of 'Chhaya Mat Chhoona' is that one should neither cling to the lost happiness of the past nor flee from the sorrows of life. The poet, addressing his own mind, warns that touching the 'shadow' of bygone joys only doubles one's grief, because the past has no real existence in the present. He admits that life holds few joys and many sufferings, that its paths are mostly dark with little light. Yet the solution he offers is not despair but acceptance: forget what could not be attained, let go of what has passed, and embrace the future with courage. Even a dear 'star' that has set should not be mourned endlessly. By comparing happiness to drifting clouds that give only a moment's shade, the poet teaches that both joy and sorrow are transient. Thus the poem teaches the true art of living — to remain balanced, to live bravely in the present, to value reality over illusion, and to walk steadfastly towards the future with hope rather than weeping over a vanished past.

Q. The poem reflects a balanced and optimistic view of life. Discuss this statement with reference to the poet's treatment of joy and sorrow.

Although the poem honestly recognises that 'joys are few and sufferings many' and that life's paths are largely dark, it never sinks into pessimism. Rather, it reflects a mature, balanced and ultimately optimistic philosophy. Girijakumar Mathur does not deny pain; he accepts it as part of life. But he refuses to let his mind drown in either the grief of present hardship or the nostalgia of lost happiness. His advice — 'forget what could not be attained and embrace the future', 'whatever has passed is gone' — is essentially hopeful and forward-looking. By treating both the golden dreams of the past and the rest given by clouds as momentary, he teaches detachment without despair. The poet's optimism lies in his faith that life must move on; instead of clinging to the shadow of yesterday, one should bravely face today and welcome tomorrow. This blend of realism about sorrow with hope for the future makes the poem a balanced and inspiring meditation on how to live wisely.
