Overview

'Lakhnavi Andaaz' is taken from his collection and satirises the empty, artificial aristocratic pretension (nawabi snobbery) of people who maintain false show without substance.
📖 Detailed Explanation

The narrator (Yashpal himself) wanted to write a new kind of story without a plot, characters, incident, philosophy or relationships — relying only on the mood and effect of a scene. To find solitude and to save time, he decided to travel by a second-class train compartment, hoping it would be almost empty, so that he could think over his story in peace. He bought a second-class ticket for a short distance, expecting an empty compartment.

When the narrator reached the second-class compartment, he was disappointed to find it was not empty. A single passenger was already seated there — a well-dressed, soft and plump Nawab Sahib, who clearly did not welcome the narrator's arrival. The Nawab had spread two fresh, fragrant green cucumbers (kheere) on the seat before him, along with a towel, water and other arrangements. The narrator's sudden entry disturbed the Nawab's privacy, and the Nawab looked uncomfortable and displeased, as if the narrator had intruded upon his solitude.

An awkward, formal relationship developed between them. The Nawab tried to hide his discomfort behind a mask of courtesy and aristocratic manners. After a while, to overcome the embarrassment, the Nawab politely invited the narrator to share the cucumbers, saying 'Kheere ka shauk farmayenge?' (Would you care for some cucumber?). The narrator, sensing the lack of genuine warmth in the invitation and not wanting to oblige a man whose hospitality was only for show, politely declined, saying that his digestion was weak and he did not eat cucumbers.

After the narrator's refusal, the Nawab Sahib prepared the cucumbers with great ceremony and elaborate style. He washed the cucumbers, wiped them dry with the towel, peeled them carefully with a knife, cut them into fine, even, round slices, and arranged them beautifully. He then sprinkled red chilli powder, salt and other spices on them, making them look very appetising. The whole process was carried out with the leisurely refinement of true Lakhnavi (Lucknow) nawabi style.

Now came the most ironic and satirical part. After preparing the cucumber slices so beautifully and even bringing the slices close to his lips and inhaling their fragrance with relish — making his mouth water — the Nawab Sahib did NOT eat a single piece. Instead, he picked up the slices one by one, smelt them deeply, and then threw them out of the window! After tossing away all the cucumbers, he wiped his lips and mouth with the towel, lay back grandly against the seat, and let out a contented sigh of satisfaction, as though he had had a hearty, fulfilling meal.

Seeing this strange display, the astonished narrator looked at the Nawab Sahib, who, with great dignity and false pride, explained: 'Kheera lazzat mein bhaari aur namak ke saath jismaani taqat ko jeb se kamzor karta hai' — meaning cucumber is heavy in taste and harmful to health and dignity. He had merely enjoyed the smell and the show of eating, considering it beneath his nawabi status to actually eat it and yet unwilling to deny himself the appearance of having eaten. Watching all this, the narrator realised that just as the Nawab had filled his stomach with mere smell and imagination, in the same way a story too could perhaps be written without real plot, characters or incident — purely on the basis of effect and atmosphere. He concluded with a satirical thought that such a contentless, hollow approach was indeed possible — both for the Nawab's 'meal' and for the new kind of 'plotless story'.

'Lakhnavi Andaaz' by Yashpal is a satirical sketch that ridicules false aristocratic pride and hollow show. The narrator boards a near-empty second-class train compartment to find solitude to think about writing a new, plotless kind of story. There he finds a plump, well-dressed Nawab Sahib who is annoyed at his intrusion. The Nawab has two cucumbers and arrangements to eat them. After awkward formality, he half-heartedly offers cucumber to the narrator, who refuses citing weak digestion. The Nawab then ceremoniously washes, peels, slices and seasons the cucumbers with great refinement — but instead of eating them, he only smells each slice with relish and throws every piece out of the window. Finally he wipes his mouth, lies back contentedly and burps as if he has had a full meal, declaring cucumber to be heavy and harmful. Through this absurd 'nawabi' behaviour, Yashpal exposes the empty, fake snobbery of those who maintain status only through pretence. The incident also gives the narrator the idea that a story too may be created merely from atmosphere and effect, without real plot or substance.
💡 Central Idea
Read in English
The central idea of the lesson is a sharp satire on the hollow, false pride and artificial show of decadent aristocracy. Through the Nawab who pretends to feast on cucumbers merely by smelling and throwing them away, Yashpal shows that empty pomp and pretension without real substance is meaningless — just as a story without plot, characters or genuine content is hollow.

🧭 Message & Title

The message of the lesson is that true worth lies in substance and reality, not in empty show and false pride. Maintaining an artificial image of status and refinement, without any real basis, only makes a person ridiculous. One should be genuine and practical rather than a slave to hollow pretension and outdated snobbery.

The title 'Lakhnavi Andaaz' (the Lucknow Style) is perfectly apt. Lucknow has long been famous for its refined manners, courtesy, etiquette and aristocratic nawabi culture. In the story, the Nawab Sahib's elaborate, ceremonious way of preparing cucumbers and his choosing to merely smell and discard them rather than eat them — purely to maintain his dignified 'style' — is the very embodiment of this exaggerated Lakhnavi refinement and false pride. The title thus ironically captures the hollow pomp and pretentious manners that the story satirises, making it entirely justified.

The Nawab Sahib is the central character around whom the satire revolves. He is plump, soft-bodied, well-dressed and refined in manner. He is the embodiment of decadent nawabi culture — full of false pride, pretension and exaggerated sense of status. Though he carries only two ordinary cucumbers, he prepares them with elaborate ceremony, yet refuses to actually eat them, considering it beneath his dignity. He values show over substance and maintains a hollow aristocratic image by merely smelling the cucumbers and pretending to be full. He is reserved, a little arrogant, displeased at the narrator's intrusion, and offers hospitality only as an empty formality. Through him, Yashpal portrays the ridiculous emptiness of those who cling to false grandeur without real means.

The narrator is Yashpal himself — an observant, thoughtful and sensitive writer. He is keen on writing a new, experimental, plotless story. He is sharp-witted and perceptive: he immediately senses the lack of genuine warmth in the Nawab's invitation and politely refuses the cucumber out of self-respect. He silently observes the Nawab's strange behaviour and draws an intelligent, ironic conclusion about both the hollowness of false pride and the craft of storytelling. He represents the rational, critical observer who exposes pretension through quiet irony.

Yashpal's 'Lakhnavi Andaaz' is a powerful satire on the empty, false pride of the decadent nawabi class. The Nawab Sahib, though possessing only two ordinary cucumbers, treats them with elaborate ceremony — washing, peeling, slicing and seasoning them with great refinement. Yet, considering it beneath his dignity to actually eat such a 'common' food, he merely smells each slice with relish and throws every piece out of the window. He then wipes his mouth, lies back grandly and burps in satisfaction, as if he has had a hearty meal, declaring cucumber to be heavy and harmful. Through this absurd behaviour, Yashpal exposes how the decaying aristocracy, having lost real wealth and power, still clings to hollow status and pretension, valuing show over substance. The Nawab fills his stomach merely with smell and imagination — a symbol of the emptiness of those who maintain a false image without any real basis. The story thus ridicules misplaced class pride and teaches that true worth lies in reality and substance, not in artificial show.

At the beginning of the lesson, the narrator expresses his wish to write a new, experimental story without any plot, characters, incident, philosophy or relationships — relying only on mood, atmosphere and effect. While observing the Nawab Sahib, he sees a man who fills his stomach merely by smelling and discarding the cucumbers, without actually eating anything — sustaining a feeling of fullness purely through imagination and show. This strange spectacle gives the narrator his idea: just as the Nawab created a sense of a 'meal' without real food, a story too might perhaps be created purely from atmosphere and effect, without any real plot, characters or substance. With gentle irony, the narrator concludes that such a hollow, contentless creation is indeed 'possible' — both for the Nawab's pretended meal and for the new kind of plotless story. The conclusion is itself a subtle satire, hinting that a story without real substance, like a meal of mere smell, would be equally empty and meaningless.

The Nawab Sahib is a plump, well-dressed, refined aristocrat travelling in a second-class train compartment. The scene takes place inside that compartment, where the narrator is also seated.

He considered it beneath his nawabi dignity to actually eat such a common food, yet did not wish to forgo the pleasure and show of eating. So he satisfied himself merely with the smell and the pretence, throwing the slices away.

It reveals the Nawab's false pride, pretension and hollow sense of status. It satirises the decadent aristocracy that maintains an empty show of refinement and 'fullness' without any real substance, valuing image over reality.
