Overview

Cover Poster

On Krishna's feet the lovely anklets tinkle, and around his waist the small bells (kinkini) chime with sweet melody. On his dark, swarthy body the yellow garment (pitambar) shines, and upon his heart a beautiful garland of forest flowers (vanmala) sways joyfully. On his forehead is a great crown, his large eyes are restless and playful, and his gentle smile spreads like moonlight over his moon-like face. Says the poet Dev — may that beautiful one, who is like a lamp lighting up the temple that is this world, the bridegroom of Braj (Krishna), be my helper and protector.

Here the poet describes Nature as a mother caring for the infant Spring (Vasant). The branch of a tree is its cradle, the new tender leaves are its bedsheet, and the flowers form a beautiful little frock (jhangula) that adorns its body with great splendour. The wind gently rocks the cradle, while the peacock and the parrot chatter and talk to the baby, and the cuckoo (koel) swings and delights the child, clapping its hands (with its sweet calls). The flowers, full of pollen, perform the ritual of warding off the evil eye with mustard and salt; the lotus-bud, like a maidservant, spreads a complete bed upon the creepers. The dew of night puts the infant to sleep and then wakes it, and at dawn the rose awakens it with a soft snap (chatkari) of its blooming petals.

In this kavitt the poet describes a moonlit night in autumn (sharad ritu). The whole scene appears as if a temple of nectar (amrit) has been built and polished with crystal stones; the ocean of moonlight has surged and swelled up like an ocean of curd. The moonbeams look like flowers of white foam blooming, and like white kunda flowers spread out everywhere like milk; the brilliant, white nectar has overflowed and come pouring forth. The pure, clear moonlight has scattered and spread here and there in such a way that it seems the entire world has been born brimming with nectar. Gazing again and again, the poet is enchanted; the splendour and the comparisons (upama) are boundless. Dev says that here even comparison (upama) has merged into and become one with the comparison itself — i.e., the beauty is beyond all comparison.

📝 Summary

These three compositions by the Riti-era poet Dev — one savaiya and two kavitts — display his mastery of imagery, sound and decorative description. In the first savaiya, the poet paints a captivating portrait of Lord Krishna, the bridegroom of Braj: anklets tinkling on his feet, a girdle chiming at his waist, the yellow pitambar shining on his dark body, the vanmala swaying on his chest, a crown on his brow, restless eyes and a moonlike smiling face. The poet calls him the lamp that illumines the temple of the world and prays for his protection. The second composition is a kavitt describing the season of Spring (Vasant) imagined as a newborn infant lovingly nurtured by Nature: the tree-branch is its cradle, new leaves its bedding, flowers its frock; the wind rocks it, peacock, parrot and cuckoo entertain it, and the rose wakes it at dawn. The third kavitt describes the radiant moonlight of an autumn night, comparing it to a crystal temple of nectar, an ocean of curd, foam-flowers and kunda blossoms — a beauty so boundless that comparison itself dissolves before it. Together the poems showcase shringar, nature's beauty and Dev's exquisite use of metaphor and alliteration.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of these compositions is the celebration of beauty — divine, natural and aesthetic. Through the radiant form of Krishna, the tender infancy of Spring nurtured by Nature, and the nectar-like moonlight of autumn, Dev expresses the Riti-era ideal of refined, decorative description (alankar-pradhan kavya), where word, sound and image fuse to evoke wonder (adbhut) and delight in the loveliness of the world.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poems convey that beauty — whether of the divine, of a season, or of a moonlit night — is to be observed with a poet's attentive, reverent eye and celebrated. They teach us to find joy and wonder in the small details of nature and life, and remind us that the highest beauty lies beyond words and comparisons.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Savaiya aur Kavitt' (Savaiya and Kavitt) is apt and accurate because it names the two metrical forms in which these three compositions are written — the first is a savaiya and the next two are kavitts. Rather than a thematic title, NCERT has named the selection after the classical Hindi metres (chhand) that Dev employed so skilfully, drawing the reader's attention to the form and craft that are central to Riti-era poetry. The title therefore aptly highlights the poet's command over these traditional metres.

🪄 Literary Devices

The repetition of the same consonant sounds — such as the 'न'/'म' sounds in 'पाँयनि नूपुर मंजु' and the 'फ' sound in 'फेन के-से फूल फूले' — creates a pleasing musical quality (anuprasa alankar) throughout the poems.

Krishna is identified with a lamp and the world with a temple ('jag-mandir-deepak'), and the moonlight with a 'temple of nectar' (sudha mandir), without using 'like' or 'as' — these are rupak alankar (metaphors) in which the subject and the object of comparison are fused.

Moonlight is compared to flowers of foam, to milky kunda flowers and to an ocean of curd using the connective 'ko-so / ke-se' (like/as), forming upama alankar (similes).

Spring is shown as a human infant and natural elements — wind, peacock, parrot, cuckoo, rose — are given human actions of rocking, talking, swinging and waking, which is manvikaran (personification).

The claim that the entire world has been born brimming with nectar through the moonlight is an exaggeration (atishayokti) that heightens the sense of boundless beauty.

The repetition of words such as 'dekhi dekhi' and 'jahan-tahan' emphasises continuity and spread, adding rhythm and intensity (punarukti prakash alankar).

Long Answer Questions
Q. Describe how the poet Dev portrays the beauty of Lord Krishna in the first savaiya. Which images does he use?

In the first savaiya, Dev paints a vivid, multi-sensory portrait of Lord Krishna as the bridegroom of Braj. He uses auditory imagery in the sweet tinkling of the anklets on Krishna's feet and the melodious chiming of the small bells (kinkini) at his waist. He uses rich visual imagery in the yellow pitambar shining against Krishna's dark, swarthy body, the beautiful vanmala swaying joyfully on his chest, and the great crown (kirit) on his forehead. The poet draws special attention to Krishna's large, restless eyes and his gentle smile, which spreads like moonlight over his moon-like face (a fine metaphor). Finally, he rises to a devotional note by calling Krishna the lamp that lights up the temple of the world ('jag-mandir-deepak') and praying that this beautiful one be his protector and helper. Thus, through alliteration, metaphor and a careful blending of sound and sight, Dev creates an enchanting, devotional image of Krishna's beauty, characteristic of Riti-era shringar poetry.

Q. How does Dev present Nature as a mother in the Spring kavitt? Explain with reference to the imagery used.

In the Spring kavitt, Dev imagines the season of Spring as a newborn child and the whole of Nature as a loving mother (and her attendants) who tends to it — a beautiful example of personification (manvikaran). The branch of a tree becomes the baby's cradle, the new, tender leaves its soft bedding, and the colourful flowers its little frock (jhangula) that adds to its splendour. The wind gently rocks this cradle; the peacock and the parrot chatter and talk to the infant; the cuckoo swings it and delights it with its sweet calls, as if clapping its hands. The pollen-laden flowers perform the ritual of warding off the evil eye with mustard and salt, and the lotus-bud, like a maidservant, spreads a complete bed upon the creepers. At night the dew lulls the baby to sleep, and at dawn the rose awakens it with the soft snap of its blooming petals. Through these tender, homely images Dev expresses the deep, affectionate bond between Nature and the season, and conveys the freshness, beauty and joyfulness of Spring. The vivid personification and the gentle, melodious diction make this one of the finest nature descriptions in Riti poetry.
