Overview

About the author: Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala' (1899–1961) is one of the four great pillars of the Chhayavad (Romantic) movement in Hindi poetry, alongside Jaishankar Prasad, Sumitranandan Pant and Mahadevi Verma. Born in Mahishadal (Bengal) and rooted in his ancestral home of Garhakola in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, Nirala lived a life marked by struggle, rebellion and deep personal loss. He is celebrated as a revolutionary who broke free from the rigid bonds of rhyme and metre, pioneering 'mukt chhand' (free verse) in Hindi—indeed his very pen-name 'Nirala' means 'the unique one'. His poetry blends romantic imagination with revolutionary fervour and humane compassion for the oppressed. Major works include 'Anamika', 'Parimal', 'Geetika', 'Tulsidas' and the famous long poem 'Ram ki Shakti Puja' and 'Saroj Smriti'. The two short poems here—'Utsaah' (a cloud-song calling for revolution) and 'At Nahin Rahi Hai' (capturing the irrepressible beauty of spring/Phagun)—display his mastery of imagery, sound and the spirit of unbound creativity.

📝 Summary
This unit contains two short poems by Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala'. In 'Utsaah' (Enthusiasm), the poet addresses the cloud as a powerful, dynamic symbol. The cloud is at once the bringer of rain that cools the scorched, restless world, and a metaphor for revolution and a poet who fills the world with new life and new poetry. The dark, curly, lightning-bearing cloud carries within it both gentleness (like a child's imagination) and the explosive force of the thunderbolt (vajra). The poet repeatedly urges the cloud to thunder and rain, so that the suffering of the parched earth and people may end and a new, transformed life may begin. The second poem, 'At Nahin Rahi Hai', captures the overflowing beauty of the spring month of Phagun. Nature's radiance is so abundant that it cannot be contained—it fills every house with fragrance, makes the poet feel as if he has sprouted wings, and refuses to leave his sight. Branches laden with green and red leaves, garlands of softly scented flowers and layer upon layer of splendour spread everywhere, expressing the boundless, irrepressible joy and beauty of nature.

💡 Central Idea
Together these two poems celebrate the boundless energy of nature. 'Utsaah' uses the cloud as a symbol of revolution, new creation and life-giving change, calling for the transformation of a suffering, stagnant world; 'At Nahin Rahi Hai' depicts the irrepressible, overflowing beauty and joy of spring (Phagun) that cannot be confined. Both poems convey the spirit of vitality, hope and the unstoppable power of nature and creativity.

🎯 Themes
Cloud as a symbol of revolution and change: In 'Utsaah' the cloud is not merely a rain-cloud but a 'viplav' (revolution) cloud, longed for by all, that ends the suffering of the scorched world and ushers in a new order—suggesting social and political transformation.

The creative power of the poet: The cloud is identified with the poet ('kavi, navjeevan wale') who fills the world with 'nutan kavita' (new poetry). Creativity, like the cloud, carries both gentleness and the explosive force of the thunderbolt.

The irrepressible beauty and joy of nature: 'At Nahin Rahi Hai' celebrates the overflowing splendour of spring that cannot be contained—fragrance fills every home, beauty spreads layer upon layer, expressing nature's boundless vitality.

Hope, renewal and new life: Both poems look towards transformation—the cooling of the burning earth and the arrival of fresh life in 'Utsaah', and the joyous renewal of nature in spring in 'At Nahin Rahi Hai'.

🧭 Message & Title
The poems convey that change, renewal and new creation are inevitable and welcome. Like the cloud that must thunder and rain to relieve the parched earth, society too needs revolution and fresh creative energy to transform suffering into new life. And like the boundless beauty of spring, joy, vitality and beauty cannot be suppressed—we should open ourselves to nature's overflowing splendour and to the spirit of hope and renewal it represents.

The first title 'Utsaah' (Enthusiasm) is apt because the entire poem throbs with the energy, eagerness and excitement of the approaching cloud, symbolising revolution and new creation; the cloud's roar and rain awaken enthusiasm and hope in a weary world. The second title 'At Nahin Rahi Hai' (lit. 'It Is Not Being Contained') is perfectly chosen because the poem's central idea is that the beauty of spring/Phagun is so overflowing that it simply cannot be contained—the very phrase is repeated to emphasise the irrepressible, boundless quality of nature's splendour. Both titles directly capture the dominant feeling of their respective poems.

In 'Utsaah' the cloud symbolises revolution ('viplav'), the creative poet who fills the world with new poetry, and the life-giving force that transforms suffering into renewal. It carries both gentleness (a child's imagination) and explosive power (the hidden vajra).

Nirala describes the beauty of Phagun as so overflowing that it cannot be contained anywhere. Its fragrance fills every house, it makes the poet feel as if he has grown wings, it refuses to leave his sight, and branches laden with green and red leaves and garlands of fragrant flowers spread splendour layer upon layer.

Both poems are written in free verse without fixed metre or a rigid rhyme scheme. Nirala broke away from traditional bondage of rhyme and metre, allowing the rhythm to flow naturally with the feeling—this unbound form matches the spirit of revolution and the irrepressible beauty of nature in the poems.

In 'Utsaah', Nirala presents the cloud as a complex, layered symbol that holds within it both tenderness and revolutionary force. On one hand, the cloud is described as 'lalit lalit, kaale ghunghraale' (lovely, dark and curly) and 'baal kalpana ke-se paale'—nurtured as gently as a child's imagination, suggesting softness, beauty and nurturing care. The cloud is also called 'kavi, navjeevan wale'—the poet who brings new life and fills the world with fresh poetry, an image of creative gentleness. On the other hand, within this same beautiful cloud lies the explosive power of change: 'vidyut-chhabi ur mein' (the lustre of lightning in its heart) and 'vajra chhipa' (the thunderbolt hidden within). The cloud is explicitly called 'viplav ke baadal'—the cloud of revolution, longed for by every heart ('jan-jan ke man vaanchhit'). The scorched, restless people of the world ('vikal vikal, unman... nidaagh ke sakal jan') await it to cool the burning earth ('tapt dhara-jal se sheetal kar do'). Thus the cloud unites two opposite qualities—the soft beauty of creation and the fierce power of revolution—showing that true transformation springs from a force that is at once nurturing and powerful. This blending of romanticism with revolutionary fervour is the hallmark of Nirala's poetry.

In 'At Nahin Rahi Hai', Nirala captures the overflowing, irrepressible beauty of Phagun (the spring season) through vivid sensory imagery and a tone of joyous wonder. The very refrain—'at nahin rahi hai... sat nahin rahi hai... hat nahin rahi hai... pat nahin rahi hai'—built on words ending in similar sounds, repeatedly stresses that the radiance of spring is so abundant that it cannot be contained, cannot fit, will not move away, cannot be covered. Through the sense of smell, the poet says the fragrance of Phagun 'breathes' somewhere and fills 'ghar-ghar' (every single house), giving nature a living, personified presence. Through a feeling of lightness and exhilaration, he says the season makes him feel as if wings ('par-par') have sprouted and he could fly into the sky—conveying the intoxicating effect of spring's beauty. Through visual imagery, he describes branches laden with leaves, 'kahin hari, kahin laal' (somewhere green, somewhere red), and a garland of softly fragrant flowers lying upon nature's breast. The phrase 'paat-paat shobha-shri pat nahin rahi hai' suggests beauty spread out layer upon layer, so vast that it overflows everywhere. The whole poem pulses with delight, personification and rich colour and fragrance, expressing the boundless vitality and joy of nature in spring, which simply cannot be confined within any limit.

The poet addresses the cloud ('baadal'). He asks it to thunder and to encircle the dark sky again and again, and to once more fill the world with new poetry—that is, to bring revolution and new life.

He calls the cloud 'kavi, navjeevan wale' because, like a poet, the cloud creates something new and life-giving—it pours down rain that revives the scorched earth and fills the world with fresh 'poetry', symbolising creative and revolutionary renewal.

This line uses alliteration (anupras alankaar)—the repetition of the 'gh'/'g' sound in 'gher gher ghor gagan'—and also repetition (punrukti) of the word 'gher', creating a strong musical and emphatic effect.

By 'at nahin rahi hai' the poet means that the radiance and beauty of the month of Phagun (spring) is so abundant that it cannot be contained anywhere—it overflows and does not fit within any limit.

The beauty of Phagun fills every house with fragrance and so enchants the poet that he feels as if he has grown wings and could fly into the sky; even when he tries to look away, the beauty refuses to leave his sight.

These lines use repetition (punrukti prakaash alankaar) of the words 'ghar-ghar' and 'par-par', which adds rhythm and emphasis; they also show personification, as Phagun is addressed as a living being who breathes and acts.
