Overview

About the author: Surdas (c. 1478–1583) was the foremost poet of the Bhakti (devotional) movement and the greatest among the 'Ashtachhap' poets initiated by Vallabhacharya. Said to have been born blind near Delhi, he became a devotee of Lord Krishna and spent his life singing his glory. His major works are 'Sursagar', 'Sahitya Lahari' and 'Sur Saravali'. 'Sursagar' is his masterpiece, in which 'Bhramaragit' (the Song of the Bee) is especially famous. In these pads the Gopis of Braj, separated from Krishna, taunt the messenger Uddhava who has come to teach them 'Nirgun' (formless, attributeless) worship and the path of Yoga. Surdas is a master of 'Vatsalya' (parental love) and 'Shringar' (love) sentiments, and is honoured with the saying 'सूर सूर तुलसी ससी' (Sur is the sun of poetry).
📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
O Uddhava! You are indeed very fortunate, for you have remained untouched by the bonds of love; your heart has never been coloured by affection. You are like the lotus leaf that lives within the water yet is never wetted or stained by it. You are like a pot of oil dipped in water, which not even a single drop of water can cling to.

You have never even dipped your foot in the river of love, nor have your eyes ever been intoxicated by Krishna's beauty. Surdas says — the Gopis declare: but we are weak, simple-hearted women; we have got stuck (fast) in Krishna's love just as an ant gets stuck and dies clinging to a lump of jaggery.

The longings of our hearts have remained buried within our hearts alone. O Uddhava, to whom can we go and tell them? They cannot even be spoken aloud. We bore the agony of our body and mind only by clinging to the support of the hope that one day Krishna would return. Now you tell us this strange code of love (that we should worship the formless Brahma) — but who has ever loved by adopting such a path?

O Uddhava, our minds are already whirling like a spinning top in Krishna's love — from where has this Yoga come now? Our eyes can no longer see anything in any of the ten directions, yet you wish to teach us (worship of the formless). We meditate only upon the lotus-eyed Krishna; why then do you expound the path of Yoga to us? Hearing your sermon we sit silent and dumbstruck as if cheated — O Uddhava, we go on singing the praises of Hari (Krishna) alone.

It seems Krishna has now gone and learnt statecraft (cunning politics). Earlier he was straightforward, but now, through the bee-messenger (Uddhava), he sends us cleverly devised words and torments us in our separation. Once the path of Yoga was meant only for the people of the world (the renouncers); but now Krishna thinks this doctrine will please our minds. O Bee! You have brought us these clever lessons in many ways.

The Gopis finally turn their reproach upon Krishna himself. They say — O Uddhava, it would have been far better if we had never tied the bond of love with Hari. Whatever happiness we once received from him, all of it you (and your message of Yoga) have made us lose. Surdas says the Gopis declare: the true duty of a king is that his subjects should never be oppressed. 📝 Summary
These pads are taken from the 'Bhramaragit' section of Surdas's 'Sursagar'. After Krishna leaves Braj for Mathura, he sends his friend Uddhava with a message urging the Gopis to give up their love for the personal, embodied Krishna and instead worship the formless, attributeless (Nirgun) Brahma through Yoga and meditation. The Gopis, deeply immersed in 'Sagun' love for the flute-playing, lotus-eyed Krishna, find this teaching useless and even insulting. In the first pad they sarcastically call Uddhava 'fortunate' for being untouched by love — like a lotus leaf in water or an oil-pot dipped in water — while they themselves are stuck in love like an ant in jaggery. In the second pad they lament that their unspoken sorrow cannot be told to anyone, and that they survived only on the hope of Krishna's return; this strange new 'code of love' is unknown to them. In the third pad they say their hearts already spin like a top, so they have no room for Yoga; they meditate only on the lotus-eyed Krishna. In the later pads they accuse Krishna of having learnt 'rajneeti' (cunning politics) in Mathura, and finally reproach him directly: a true king must not oppress his subjects, yet Krishna has stolen the Gopis' wealth of love — what kind of justice is this? Through gentle taunts and sharp logic, the Gopis establish the supremacy of Sagun, loving devotion over dry, formless knowledge.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of these pads is the supremacy of 'Sagun Bhakti' — loving, personal devotion to an embodied God — over the dry, formless 'Nirgun' worship and Yoga. Through the viraha (separation) and sharp, witty arguments of the Gopis, Surdas shows that true love cannot be replaced by abstract knowledge; the heart already filled with Krishna has no room for Yoga.

🎯 Themes
Viraha (the pangs of separation): The unbearable suffering of the Gopis separated from Krishna, who survive only on the hope of his return, is the emotional core of the pads.

🧭 Message & Title
The pads convey that genuine, heartfelt love and devotion are far higher than abstract intellectual knowledge. A heart truly absorbed in love cannot be swayed by sermons on detachment and Yoga. They also teach that those in power (kings/rulers) carry a duty not to oppress or rob their people — true authority lies in protecting the love and trust of one's own.

The poem is simply titled 'Pad' because in Bhakti-era Hindi poetry 'Pad' refers to a short, lyrical song-unit meant for singing, usually set to a 'raga'. Surdas composed his 'Sursagar' in thousands of such pads. The title is apt because each unit here is an independent, musical, emotionally complete pad expressing the Gopis' feelings; collectively, drawn from the 'Bhramaragit', they form the famous song-cycle in which the Gopis respond to Uddhava.

Abstract ideas are presented as concrete objects without 'like/as' — love becomes a 'river of love', and the Gopis' devotion becomes 'wealth' that is robbed to make 'royal treasure'.

The whole tone is ironic — calling the love-less Uddhava 'fortunate', and sarcastically saying Krishna has gone and 'studied politics' in Mathura.

🎓 Exam Questions & Answers
The Gopis call Uddhava 'fortunate' because he has remained completely untouched by love and his heart was never coloured by affection for Krishna. It is not praise but biting sarcasm — they mock him for being as dry and unfeeling as a lotus leaf in water, never having tasted the sweetness (or the pain) of love.

They compare Uddhava to (1) a lotus leaf that lives within water yet is never wetted or stained by it, and (2) a pot of oil dipped in water that no drop of water can cling to. Both images stress his complete aloofness from the 'water' of love.

By saying Krishna has 'learnt politics', the Gopis sarcastically mean that the once simple, straightforward Krishna has now become clever and crafty after going to Mathura. Instead of coming himself, he sends cunning, calculated messages through Uddhava — behaving like a shrewd politician rather than a loving friend.

The Gopis bore the agony of body and mind only by clinging to the hope that Krishna would return within a fixed time. They are now disappointed because, instead of Krishna himself or news of his coming, Uddhava brings the message of formless Yoga, shattering that hope.

The Gopis are devotees of the Sagun (embodied) Krishna, the lotus-eyed, flute-playing lord whom they have loved and served. When Uddhava arrives to preach the worship of the Nirgun (formless) Brahma and the path of Yoga, the Gopis reject it through a chain of clever arguments. First, they ironically praise Uddhava as 'fortunate' for being love-less — like a lotus leaf or oil-pot untouched by water — implying that one who has never loved cannot understand or teach the heart. Second, they confess that their minds already 'spin like a top' in Krishna's love and their eyes see nothing in the ten directions; a heart so full of Krishna has no empty space for Yoga. Third, they argue that meditation on the 'lotus-eyed' Krishna is itself the highest worship, so the abstract path is needless. Fourth, they expose the cruelty of the teaching: it only deepens their viraha. Thus, through emotion (viraha), logic, and witty sarcasm, the Gopis show that living, personal love for God is far superior to dry, intellectual, formless knowledge — and Uddhava, the great scholar of Nirgun, is himself converted to Sagun devotion.

In the final pad the Gopis cleverly raise their personal grief to the level of statecraft and justice. They argue that the foremost duty (raj-dharma) of a king is that his subjects should never be oppressed or troubled. But Krishna, now a ruler in Mathura, has done the opposite — he has snatched away the Gopis' precious 'wealth' of love and devotion and turned it into his own 'royal treasure', leaving them impoverished in their separation. They ask pointedly where he has learnt that such robbery counts as 'justice'. Beneath this political metaphor lies the deep emotion of viraha and loving complaint (pranay-roosh): the Gopis are not truly attacking Krishna but expressing how wholly their love belongs to him and how unbearable his absence is. By turning their love into 'wealth' unjustly seized by the king, they assert their rightful claim upon Krishna and demand his return, making their reproach both witty and heart-rending.

The Gopis of Braj are speaking to Uddhava, the friend and messenger of Krishna, who has come from Mathura to teach them the worship of the formless Brahma. They speak in their state of viraha (separation) from Krishna.

Uddhava is called 'fortunate' because he remained untouched by the bonds of love and his heart was never coloured by affection. The tone is deeply ironic and sarcastic — the Gopis are actually mocking his emotionless, dry nature.

These lines use 'Upama' (simile, through 'jyaun') comparing Uddhava to a lotus leaf and an oil-pot in water; 'Anupras' (alliteration, as in 'purain paat'); and 'Drishtant/Utpreksha' (illustrative comparison) to stress his complete detachment from love.
